Judopunch 523 Posted December 3, 2014 - a decent campfire doesn't need chopped firewood; you can search for stones in the sea and cook fish in no time. Can you elaborate on the cooking with just rocks? If i could cook without having to have an axe that would be crazy useful. Here's the issue. There's too many who think that the survival is just a playstyle and not an actual aspect of the game. They treat it like PvP vs PvE where the two shouldn't mingle. They want to PvP and not be hindered by PvE.I agree. Those people need to go play Arma.

Wooden sticks don't have to be chopped, just go among the trees, stick your nose to the ground, run around and keep hitting 'F'. Sooner or later, you'll have the option to 'search for kindlings' or something. Take two, one for the fireplace kit and one to actually start the fire. Now, I learnt yesterday that you can find stones in the sea - just go two steps into the water and you have this option. Stones are apparently 1x1 now, so you can actually keep that on you and stay virtually immune to the axe problem. Also, I read somewhere that you can try looking for loose rocks on stone paths, but I've never tried it. If it works, then a piece of paper and a match is all you need to cook in most areas of the map. So, do we have new animals in 0.51 or not? I'm not resorting to cannibalism just yet. :)

I have tried starting a fire with only kindling and it wouldn't let me add it to the fireplace. This was on the experimental branch so perhaps it was just the server being a dick. I mentioned it earlier but only being able to make a fireplace out of rags/bandages seems too restrictive as lots of things burn.

But the old method (with firewood mandatory) made up with the challenge what it lacked in realism. For some time I would even carry a stone to sharpen my axe. :)

Go to the shore, back up a step, and you should get the action prompt "look/search for stones".

Make fireplace kit, add stones, add sticks, light?

I took that part that Whyherro123 was talking about how some people don't find the foraging part boring and commented on it.
TheHermit (DayZ) 22 Posted December 3, 2014 Protip: not everyone finds foraging boring. I love it, and hope they add actual realistic levels of 'foragables", so I can go all hunter-gatherer while you guys bicker and starve over canned food because you never bothered to learn anything different. Thing is, foraging for wild plants and animals takes effort and know-how. Eat the wrong plant, or the wrong part of the right plant, and you will die. Animals, surprisingly enough, don't want to be eaten, so trapping them is often difficult. Maybe the Devs could include "plant guides", showing and describing edible plants, and expand on tracking and trapping small and large game.As it is, it is boring (to me) in exp currently. There are apples and berries. So I agree, add more options, make me go to special risky locations, add more variables such as sickness, or maybe I need salt to preserve meats for the road, I always thought it weird that we're carrying raw meat around... I like that there aren't working wells in stable, so I need canteens + soon water purification. -These are things that I hope to look forward to as the game matures. I want engagement, this is just survival, it is a GAME of survival. It's not quite simulation else we would have to pee and crap, so I still appreciate being in the middle to some degree, which means it can still be of gaming type entertainment, and not TOO serious. And lighten up guys.
Kirov (DayZ) 585 Posted December 3, 2014 (edited) So what your saying is sticks can be used in a fireplace kit? Or must it be an upgraded fireplace kit with stones? Make fireplace kit, add stones, add sticks, light? I haven't checked that, but it is my impression you need either kind of wood in order to ignite it. Then it can run on one stick and several stones and I think you can even take out the stick. I'll check that next time. I built a campfire with only 5 kindlings and it took 14 minutes to cook deer steaks. Far from an exciting gameplay, I admit, but nevertheless an option of last resort. It seems that with 0.51, water consumption got much much quicker, at least when you sprint a lot. And my two cents about the issue of realism - I don't really consider it realism, I consider it a challenge. And I want more of it. I don't mind weather conditions harsher than they actually are at this latitude, as I want to struggle weather rather run around in a jumper just because it's 'springtime'. I think DayZ is not realistic and I think it never will be. Our avatars don't have to sleep, poop, are never really exhausted, are jack-of-all-trades, never have a toothache, will never spawn with epilepsy. You can literally make the game four times harder and our characters will still remain larger-than-life superhumans. So maybe this is not an issue of 'realistic', but rather, how much 'challenging' you want the game to be. I vote for 'a lot', thank you very much. EDIT: and thanks for the tip, Whyherro. Kirov (DayZ) 585 Posted December 4, 2014 One kindling is all that is need to start and maintain fire, to which you can add up to 8 stones. A funny thing, apparently only firekits with wood count as the real McCoy and currently you can put 8 stones and 5 steaks into a firekit and still pack the whole set into your backpack. Hopefully will get fixed soon. Another bug I noticed was related to the compass and actually hurt me a lot. The directions were rotated 90 degree clockwise (my compass showed West where the North was, etc.). I'm 100% sure it wasn't my getting lost, I was in Severograd at the moment. Dehydration can be very much an issue in 0.51, water gets used very quickly. Still, plenty of stuff on persistent servers. Since this conversation I've spotted scores of greenhouses safe for playing Granny the Gardener. The only thing I can't seem to find now are fishing hooks. Do you guys know any good locations for setting rabbit snares? I can't catch a thing and apparently the snares are gone on restarts even with persistence. I built three and set them up around Dolina, and within 5 minutes all three were sprung. Protip: set up the traps near a good landmark (I used rocks in a field), so you can find them when you go looking. Buggers be small!

Me and my mate used these last night and with 4 traps got 5 rabbits with 2 settings. Just remember, when you gut any animal, the quality of the knife is a huge factor. He had a pristine knife and got almost 100% off them, I had a damaged and got low 60%'s
Jex 1104 Posted December 4, 2014 Unfortunately it seems that bottles grew more rare as soon as they introduced this feature (probably because it is a more sought after item for players). I have actually only found a bottle once since they introduced the fish trap a long time ago, and that one time I didn't have anything to cut it with. LOL I find them all the time! Yesterday within 3 hours I ran by 3 or 4 of them at least.
Jex 1104 Posted December 4, 2014 I am loving the lack of food. Now to be fair, it's more that the loot (re)spawn if rooked so it'll place next to nothing in one town then a shit-ton in a hunting shelter. Still, having the survival element ramped up in a survival game is no bad thing. One thing that did catch me out yesterday was the inability to light a fire. I had an axe and matches with lots of clothing but no rags or bandages. Lying all over the place were all sorts of clothing but nothing that I can make a fireplace from which seems pretty unrealistic. Anyone who has ever put a lit cigarette to a pair of tracksuit bottoms they'll know how bloody flammable they are! They should add tampons as well - great for starting fires (unused ones though, please)
