therandomredstone 432 Posted November 12, 2014 (edited) Virtually, in DayZ a map would take up one slot, and a can would take one slot, but if you think about it, you could fit WAAY more maps in a backpack, than cans. So I don't know why they shouldn't implement half slots in DayZ, it would make inventory organizing a bit more easy in some situations, and harder in others, which is more realistic. And obviously, a small item (map) wouldn't take up as much room as a bigger item (canned food) I don't know, just maybe something to think about.. Geckofrog7 1168 Posted November 12, 2014 But the maps come with a paperweight so they're 1 full slot.
Officer25 54 Posted November 12, 2014 There's so many things wrong with the inventory there is no place to even start. Why can one fit a fireaxe 2x longer than a backpack inside of a backpack with room to spare? Why can someone fit a ballistic helmet inside of a vest? How does an ammo can fit inside of jeans? (For a size comparison, one ammo can is about the size of a small tire on a motorcycle.)Why can I only keep 32 pairs of handcuff keys in a backpack? I should realistically fit maybe 500 in there. nettles 396 Posted November 12, 2014 This game is a metaphor. People need to stop being so goddamn nitpicky. No, inventory systems aren't going to be perfect, because there's no way to program backpack space where each item has individual volumes and shapes and still have reasonable load times. You have to understand that the more intricate a game's code is, the more performance you have to sacrifice. Take the backpack space and volume with a grain of salt.
☣BioHaze☣ 7337 Posted November 12, 2014 ^^I totally agree. But I do think they could make extra thin or small items like maps, keys, can opener take up no space with default slots. Maybe something specific like vests would make it so a character would now have a default slot for something like a compass the way combat boots can hold a combat knife. threedogification 41 Posted November 18, 2014 I think we should do away with the conventional inventory and add in a system like on The Forest. You have to manually open your backpack and look at the stuff you have. If we take this concept and the fact that we can see our characters, we should be able to look down into our vest and pull out whatever we need manually. It would add a better reason for keeping ammo in the vest or pants and no essentials in the backpack. If you put your ammo in your backpack, you would have to sit down and look through your pack to find it. On a second note, I would like to be able to mix and match character stuff, like putting a hammer in my belt, or putting a pistol in the back of my pants. In the real world, organization is key and you can't always carry an axe on your back with no strap or anything to hold it on. When you find a two handed weapon as a bambi, you should have to put it in your belt like a sword until you find a backpack with adequate straps to lock it down
Karmaterror 982 Posted November 18, 2014 Fold my map! Are you mad man! Actually I quite like half slot items, with the map example it could develop some wear lines if you choose to fold it to half a slot, making some town names or roads hard to make out. Chemlights would be a good half slot item to me, stack to 2 so a full slot = 4 chems. Im sure theres loads more that could benefit, and that could have the option to be one or half a slot but with some negative effects :)

I think we will see stuff like this one day.. espeically how you say about having easier and quicker access to your vest rather than searching your bag for assorted stuffs is an essential gameplay component if you ask me... taking gear from a backpack should easily take 5 times longer than accessing a vest.. or better yet an animation of taking the backpack off to search it would really put so much more value on vests and military webbing.. goddamn i love this game.. as alpha as it is...
