AKM vs AK101 performance

Ok so, I've gotten in an argument with a friend in regards to the AKM/AK101 damage/recoil and basically the versatility and viability of both weapons. There's a chart that clearly says the damage value of the AKM bullet is stronger.

 

However there are

that go in detail and in practice demonstrate how the AK101 does more damage and has less recoil.

 

Did something change since the video was made? As far as I can tell, the AKM's recoil is still more noticeable than the AK101's, but damage is hard to gauge for me.

I dropped 1 player with 1 shot at very close range with the AKM, so I wouldn't know.

At medium range 2 hits seem to be enough at least to knock people down.

 

He had military equipment, so I doubt he wad full HP. But still, it seems more powerful to me compared to the AK101.

The AK101 has a higher projectile speed and lower recoil and because of this its easier to hit your targets head or - as in the video - a hopping zombie at some distance.

 

Both weapons are very similar in most aspects but the AKM has the advantage in capacity (75 rounds versus 30 rounds) and damage while the AK101 is a little bit easier to handle as written above. Ammo rarity seems to be the same for both guns with AKM rounds slightly easier to find but as they are also used in the SKS which is very common and a  quite effective weapon on its own creating a stronger competition than the rare M4A1.

 

So in short:

 

AKM

  • more damage
  • higher capacity with biggest magazine
  • ammo slightly easier to find

AK101

  • less recoil
  • higher projectile speed
  • less competition for ammo
  • can carry more ammo in stacks

Ok, but the question is how does the damage fit in all this. In a game where people drop from one shot, bullet damage seems to be hardly relevant. Yet I've had instances where I shot people with a helmet TWICE in the head and they would live. Yesterday I shot one guy who had a payday mask in the back of the head with an AK101 and he just walked off. Other times I'd shoot them once and they'd drop. 

 

What are your findings guys?

I would say you probably didn't hit him twice in the head. If you hit him the first time, he would have dropped unconscious at the very least.

 

AK101 is the better gun, keep it until you find an M4.

In my heavy amount of experience with the 2 weapons, killing a respective 20-40 players per weapon over the months.. (My clan kills a lot of people) Ive found that my arguing for the AK101 was silly.. the AKM is in fact slightly better currently. The damage is what does it.. everything else is so nominal that you have to look at the damage as the equalizer.. when it takes 1-2 to down any player, but the AK101 seems to always take an extra bullet or 2.. up close, then you cant ignore that fact. Ive seen it dozens of times, and was a huge advocate for the 101.. but I was silenced by logic. 

 

The AKM is better.

But was a clear shot and I'm pretty sure I did, I saw the red splashes on his head as I did. The only other thing that might interfere would be desync.

 

Edit - Irish man, I've killed at least 100 with both and I'm still not sure, the results just seem to be too random for me.

Nope.

 

Early Alpha. Damage bugs and spreads across items. Sometimes a perfect shot, only results in a damaged item. Like sunglasses.. Ive had a headshot do nothing to me but damage my glasses. Name the shot, Ive seen it only damage one item.. or kill right there. Its bugged. Not user error.

So you have somehow killed over 200 players and you still arent sure?

 

Either that is one massive exaggeration.. or you need to pay attention to life in general because after repeating something some 200 times you should have picked up on a thing or two..

Damage is pretty strange at the moment and I expect the damage system to be revised in the future (implicitly confirmed by the developers when talking about "spine damage").  By experience it seems like you need more rounds of a smaller cartridge to kill a player but the exact amount is hard to determine - probably made even harder by the current desync issues.

Call me a filthy KOSer, but everything I ever do in dayz only serves to one purpose - be as least visible as possible while having the best odds to find and kill as many people as possible. Mind you I never venture to the coast, I stay in heavily populated military areas and just pluck people from there, I get at least 3 kills a day, often more.. so I'm pretty sure I got 200 kills split over the AKs in there.

 

The thing is, I can never tell with the damn AKs what's better. Sometimes I shoot a guy in the head once with the helmet - he drops dead. Other times, he has a COWBOY hat, I shoot him, he's unconscious for a minute.. and yet some other times, I shoot them and they don't even bleed. How am I going to gather meaningful data out of that??

Think about it this way though. If you kill that many people with variable weapons and can't tell the true difference, is it even really relevant?

AKM does more damage per bullet, but it lacks accuracy and has huge recoil. Just yesterday I dropped a guy with 4 shots from AK101. 1 shot would have been enough if it was a headshot (same with AKM) and somehow I only ruined his pants even though I was aiming at his backpack, but 101 has very little recoil compared to AKM and it is easier to use. The only downside may be magazine size for some people. That's why m4 for example with 60 rnd mag is a good middle ground between accuracy and recoil and a mag size.

 

Furthermore, AK101 used to be my go-to weapon when holding-breath function used to work, now all weapons are the same. And even more, WTF with this insance weapon shaking when you run 100 meters? You have to wait like 3 minutes to be able to aim properly (without damn holding breath function). DayZ goes into wrong direction unless they fix it asap.

 

inb4 hurr durr no more COD kids sniping etc.

 

Never played COD or BF4 shitfest.

I think what you're missing, you actually made a point about. I've killed hundreds with both guns and I still can't "hands down" say one gun is better than the other due to the damage bugs and spread issues. Just like you, i've been shot in the head, point blank by a teammate for testing purposes by both guns, and each of them produced the same results as follows: 

 

AKM -   1st time. ) One shot to the head and dead

             2nd time.) One shot to the head - unconscious and only my sunglasses were ruined. 

 

AK101 -  1st time.) One shot to the head and dead

                2nd time.) One shot to the head - unconscious and only my helmet was ruined. 

 

 

As the game progresses each gun will have its advantages and disadvantages but right now I don't think its fair to put your hand down and say "X" gun is definitely better "Y" gun.  Not until the gun physics get ironed out.

We are the necessary evil within DayZ.. otherwise it would just be one massive cuddle fest, with some far too easy infected AI and a whole lot of running around for no good reason.

AKM does more damage. Fact. AK101 has less recoil. Fact.

 

I like the AK101 more. Personal choice.

 

It's irrelevant in the end what "better" gun the AKM or AK101 is. Use the one you like more.

 

We all end up dying anyway, no matter what guns we have. If you don't end up dying, then you get wiped, or the private server your character is on disappear because it wasn't renewed.

 

Just try to have fun really, because I've seen even a chamber engraved 1911 kill a infinite ammo M4 hacker. It's a mix of luck, skill and netcode....

 

 

Edit: Oh, and most stats and current values are subject to change, so I don't really see a point having all this data, if it's gonna change, again, and again, and again until we hit beta, or even, the final release. But some might get a kick out of it, I get that. Just not to be taken very seriously that's all.
