I believe the "Zombies hitting you through walls" and "dropped items disappear" bugs are at least partially the same

Recommended Posts

I guess we all know those issues:

  1. You are running around when suddenly a zombie starts chasing you. However it doesn't go for you in person but rather attacks some place of air (your hitbox) usually outside of abuildings you just entered. At the moment the only way to deal with this seems to be going back and "rescuing the hitbox".
  2. You are messing in your inventory but due to lack of free space an items drops to the ground. Usually not a problem as you can pick it up but sometimes items seem to get lost and often reappear at some different place.

Now this is what happened to me:

I ran around over fields when I came across a small shack - as I wanted to paint my AK buttstock I went inside to look for some spraypaint. I just entered the shack when I heard zombie voices and soon after I was hit. I went out to kill the zombie found it attacking my hitbox on the side of the shack a moved along before entering. After killing the zombie I went inside to use the spraypaint I found. Now by painting the AK buttstock it gets detached from the weapon and as my inventory was completely full it dropped to the ground where it... never arrived. I looked around in the shack and found nothing. Then I went outside and found the buttstock - right at the zombie corpse where it attacked my hitbox.

Nice info. So your hitbox was where you entered the shack? I don't understand the side of the shack. Did you ever step that spot so your hitbox was there?

That sounds much like a client and server character position mismatch. Your client draws your character in the shack, whereas the server calculates item and hit placement from its last known position. That would be another kind of desync, where your character fortunately hasn't been reset to the server position. That is most likely the case why many die spontaneously. In your case it produced that annoying bug.

Yes I also believe that both of them are related to that your character is somewhere else in the server than in your client. I've also observed same things multiple times.

God I can't waint until they start updating the engine and server/client networking.

It's just God awful design so far. I've never heard of such a fantastic concept game with such a God Awful game mechanic.

It's like getting a girl with the body of Jennifer Anniston but the face and voice of Elmer Fudd.

I'm just so freaking torn on whether to love this game or hate it with all my guts.

I remember once running into a house, finding a pair of better pants and switching them out. Then my old pants dissapered from the ground and somehow ended up outside in the garden.

My biggest gripe at the moment (except for the poor performance) is zombies that run through doors/wall, and how unbalanced the melee weapons really are. The vast majority of the weapons are essentially useless. You need to swing at a zombie around 10 times to kill it with a bat, yet it takes 1 hit with a pristine fireaxe, and fireaxes aren't exactly uncommon. Until you get an axe, fighting zombies is really not recommended at all.

How exactly is it unbalanced that a hit with a long piece of wood is less fatal than a strike with a heavy, sharpened piece of metal ?

Okay, replace "bat" with "crowbar" and it's the same deal. As it is now you can barely defend yourself if you dont happen to have an axe.

Realism is great, but this is a game. Dancing around a zombie for 30 seconds and swinging at him, only to turn a corner and aggro another one just isn't fun.

A crowbar is to small and light to deal the damage equivalent of a firefighter axe. And before you go ahead - a fire extinguisher is to bulky to be a decent melee weapon, since it's totally not meant to be one. And a sickle is meant to cut grass, not zombies.

Really, melee might have its flaws, but the weapons are not that unbalanced. They're the first weapons a player will pick up, so they should not enable easy mode where you can one-hit zombies with a plier.

I'm not saying it should be on par with an axe in the head chopping game, but 10 hits compared to 1 is pushing it.

Also: Are you really calling a crowbar light? They come in different sizes and the one in DayZ is about medium. Have you held one? Not trying to disrespect you, but thats about the last thing you wanna get hit in the head with if we are talking blunt instruments.
