DayZ Developer AMA: Chris Torchia

Recommended Posts

Have to disagree. Sure it's a sandbox, but the devs still can have a vision of the game and try to encourage this vision with their descisions on gameplay. Chris even explained why they dont throw many sniper rifles in the game - to enforce player interaction ( which still can be hostile! ). Sniping/getting sniped from 1km away is hardly any interaction, and i understand that point.

Except that's an extremely one sided view of the situation.  It doesn't force interaction between the sniper and the fresh spawn, but it creates other interactions between players.  It's an extremely common scenario in dayz to spawn in, start getting sniped at, and team up with other new spawns to take them out.  This happens, this happens frequently.  Those experiences are valuable.

There's obviously some bias here considering the language he's using of 1337 snipx0rz or whatever, and their decision to exclude long range sniper rifles is a bummer for a lot of people.

Well, I don't know...

Also, the Q&A was open to everyone, I found out about it when a mate let me know. It wasnt an inhouse venture.

Correct me if I`m wrong, but it wasn't. It happened on a private subreddit (/r/DayZUnderground), which means I (and most people who aren't given access) can't see what's going on there, let alone post a question. I'd be happy to post a few question to the devs, given the opportunity.

If there's some balance with 1337 snipx0rz like with M107 you have VERY LIMITED inventory in Arma 2 then why not. Especially if they make it clunky for quick movements, rare and a zombie magnet.

Like all things DayZ it's all so very contradictory and hazy when ever the devs say anything.  I mean, here's hoping that thing makes it in but I underlined/bolded the relevant part of the quote.  He likes these types of weapons, but he doesn't like what players do with them.

Nothing is set in stone, but the point I'm trying to make is I hope bias against particular play styles/payer behavior doesn't start influencing design decision in a significant way.

Pretty disappointing if they hold to that decision.

They wont hold this decision for long. Not if they want to make money at least bringing in new ppl and keeping the game interesting. It will probably be slow coming but hopefully eventually we will see more than just the SVD. That gun may make some ppl cream but its not really my cup of tea. Personally i want to see many varieties. Everything ranging from hand crafted wood to the latest metals and polymers but each gun should be rare and the ammo rarer to obtain per say. Or if not rare they should be hard to put together and parts scattered throughout the map.

Again i use snipers on zeds and players that are GEARED not fucking new spawns. That may be a valid play style for some ppl with new spawns but i find it better to use guns on geared and hostile targets. Your always going to get ppl that will try to blow new spawns away with whatever weapons they can get ahold of though. Its not just limited to sniper guns.

So limiting weapons and tools because of that would be silly i have to agree with you.

Im all for clothing choice, color choice, gun choice, executioner choice (gory ways in which you kill someone), vehicle choice, etc so i support stuff like this. It is a sandbox after all.

Reddit could have asked better questions like "Will we see an expanded map","Will we see German/British/American uniforms soon","When will diseases be implemented" or the most hard hitting and critical question of them all: "Why is the UK assault vest more common than the SMERSH vest?".

The best thing I got from that quote was: "Some people assume Chernarus = Russia but its not." That ought to settle some arguments with the simpletons that think since it sounds like Russia, Chernarus must be Russia.

Pretty sure reddit did ask better questions, what you mean is who ever picked the questions should have picked better question.

Remember that this wasn't really an "official interview", at least not to my understanding. Chris was kind enough to take some of his free time to answer questions when asked to do so by a hard working community member. The questions asked was what that group of people was interested in knowing.

Just a shame that such a nice gesture (by several people) causes such moaning.

I said thanks. Chris was cool doing the interview but how exactly am I out of line getting called out by admins and others because I would like to hear about progress on how the game and controls work?

I apologize profusely. I will get more excited about trees and a 100 year old pistols (c-96) and give less questions about how the game runs.

Don't get so defensive, man. You just need to keep in mind who was being interviewed. Chris is the Lead Artist and it's simply not his thing to talk about overall game progress and control. That's stuff Hicks or Eugen could answer a lot better, and i hope we will see something similar from both of them ( at least Eugen announced he wants to do an AMA sometime )

Hello there

Thats true, point taken. But its hardly a private club. And fairly easy to obtain access if one is a constructive applicant.

This also leads on to the fact if the had given some forewarning, we could have also asked for questions from here to send in. I shall contact them and see if thats doable.

To be honest its not really any different if we had an AMA here, reddit or any sub would have not been directly involved.

In fact its given me the idea that perhaps we need to tighten our association with reddit and stop seeing the /r/dayz folk at least as something "other".

I think the issue there is if they really want to tighten the relationship with the general community here, which is one that the mods of these forums have shaped through their moderating.

Honestly i highly doubt it.

This forum is just a bunch of 1000 plus posters or soon to be posters circle jerking each other, the mods keep this circle jerk alive and well. The people on Reddit are a lot more critical and open minded about the game. the circle jerk just won't work there.

Hello there

Perhaps the forums are not for you then? This is the games Official forum and the majority of members are fans or want to contribute in a constructive way. Your "circlejerk" comment shows how incorrect you are on how we do things here.

Im critical, in a constructive way about some aspects of Dayz myself, I just dont rant about those aspects, I talk about hem and if i receive an answer Im not happy with I dont throw tropes around like "circlejerk" I trry to discuss them.

Some issues ive been convinced by the team/forum members to understand the reason for their choices, others not. I dont rail on about them.

There are indeed forums for other games where I just dont like the attitude of either the mods or the members, I simply avoid them as eveyone else there seems fine with the way things are. If you really think we are so biased why stay here?

Thats a legit question, not a hint/sarcasm for you to leave. I dont mind you here (or anyone for that matter) as long as they abide by the rules.

Its good to have a dissenting voice but they have to be reasoned.

Dont forget when I first arrived here I wasnt really a fan of DAYZ. I really wasnt, especially as I was a "pure" milsim fan. But I opened up to the reasons why the mod was worthwhile and soon found my opinion challenged and changed. Whilst that was happening I was made a mod. I even "said" to Griff, I wont do it unless I can have MY opinions still as a player, I didnt want to be a corporate drone. He said "fine". We mods are not Yes men/ladies.

I like a debate (mass or otherwise) but dont like statements like yours as they are a closed ended opinion, there seems to be no room for maneuver.

If I were in your shoes Id leap to reddit if I thought they were a "better" forum and way to get my DAYZ info or indeed anywhere else area if I thought the forum were corrupt or as you say "circle Jerking"

To be fair, Orlok. I think what he meant by the "circle jerk" comment is that on this forum, the rules that are enforced guide mostly positive threads and comments. Many of the fair criticisms of the current version of the game are not even allowed to be discussed. So the "circle Jerk" means that in order to participate in the forums here, we are not allowed to discuss very imporant problems with the game.

While on other forums, people are allowed to talk about all aspects of the game.

Not really sure why this is hard for anyone who is truly objective to understand.

Hello there

Ok without going into details what can you not talk about here? There's very few subjects and for those that are taboo, very good reasons have been given.

We have one dedicated thread thats pretty much full of bile and hatred for the game, we tolerate that, many forums would not.

I dont have a problem with folk who dislike the game and want to discuss it, what I wont accept is rants and thats what they often are.

Indeed, today I had to tell a forum member off and almost awarded him a point for posting an opinion i greatly agreed with, but the way he/she went about it was poor and "ranty".

Criticisms are good and are needed, its all about how one goes about it. I often find myself aligned with those who dislike some aspect what I dont align myself with is the attitude.

For example, if you go into a pub and get an "off" beer and you politely bring it to the barmans attention, most likely or not youll get an apology and a new free beer. If you take the same situation and scream at the staff how lazy and incompetent they are and how they are scamming you and not giving you the beer "they promised" you, reception is going to be less than satisfactory.

I find the back slapping usually happens with trolls and "haters" who find umbridge with the fact that we moderate them.

To be honest a forum full of blind fanbois is a pointless one.

Also, remember that sometimes we have to impart rules for which the reasons may not be immediately obvious and youll have to bear with us with that. Some things are need to know, even from us, which is pretty much universal standard business practice.

Agreed. And I didn't mean anything negative towards the admins or the staff.

The game is heading in the right directions so I'm happy with the game.

This really made me glad. I am starting to look forward to the games direction more and more. Love how there are little to no plan to cater to the "1337 snip0rs" and thus the weapon list at least in 1.0 is heavily influenced by civilian weapons and or weapons of the region.

I am also interested in the comments concerning discouraging long range sniping. I wonder how they would feel about adding mil/moa turrets in game in addition to wind in order to discourage this type of gameplay. At least in this manner people would not want to snipe due to the realism and difficulty and not simply due to the extreme shortage of scoped weapons and or optics.

Overall a great q and a.

Hey if they get rid of sniper guns but allow these overpowered turret weapons than i want some god damn rocket launchers, flamethrowers and landmines to get the bastards ether out of there cubby holes or make it to where if they leave the area they get blown up.

Making it so fucking hard to play with the weapon forcing us to use other weapons does not solve the problem it just restricts game play. Now realistic restrictions im ok with but forcing shit to where its so hard to use a sniper over any other weapon is silly it should take skill to use a sniper gun but not to the point where i have to ride a bicycle while juggling 3 chainsaws and 5 cats at the same time.

These are turrets.

It would replace the silly 100m elevation adjustments that are in dayz and arma and replace them with the real life equivalent.

It would make sniping harder but at the same time allow more control.

Btw those Winchester sniper weapons you like in breaking point are nothing other than hunting rifles that would seem to fit in to what dayz seems to be aiming at.

So as you can see you don't need a railed up tacticool snipaZ rifle to achieve the same results.

Yes but it would still need decent scopes to be effective to begin with. Also i like the Winchester Rifles mainly the Super Grade 70 for the ability to use the Hot Lead Rounds or whatever there called. Basically the equivalent of armor piercing .50.

And to be fair i still want all the other DMRs and crap to in game. I just think there are other ways to penalize ppl such as weight or having to put the guns together and trying to find the scattered pieces of higher powered weapons and such.

Whatever calibre is it that you think a Win 70 can be chambered for which makes it anywhere near the ballistic equivalent of a .50BMG SLAP round?
