Hypothermia out of control?

Recommended Posts

So I log in to Dayz after a long time, my character was in the woods somewhere on the west side of the map. My buddy spawned on the other end so we start making our way toward each other. After a bit it starts raining and I get wet (pretty much immediately). Start feeling cold. I go inside, doesn't help. I wring out my clothes, doesn't help. So keep running I guess, at least you stay warm that way, right?

Well, no. After about 20 minutes my character just suddenly died of 'hypothermia'.

Is this really acceptable? I mean, there was nothing I could do about the bloody hypothermia, 1 second in the rain gets you wet already and it's a downhill ride from there. F**k all I could do. I didn't have all the tools with me to make a fire, staying inside didn't help, running didn't help, and it takes 20 mins of this bullshit to kill off an otherwise healthy, hydrated and energized character?

C'mon...that's ridiculous. What are we supposed to do if our character isn't rainproofed/fire-ready up the wazoo and it's raining? Just log on a different server and hope the rain gods are having a day off? That's stupid.

Some servers are really bad with it just gotta try and find a normal server that wont get you sick right away. Iv noticed it varies on servers with temperature changes.

My clothes weren't super, but decent. Cargo pants, hoodie, helmet, gloves, mil boots. All pristine or worn but otherwise not damaged. I was running for pretty much the entire goddamn time.

Any idea how to spot which servers are teh suck and which aren't? I actually had some pretty good shit and it's very sour grapes to lose them in such a stupid way.

This game really needs to start getting some of the basic shit right. I know it's alpha and all, but a general level of playability isn't too much to ask, is it? My friend died because the rags he just created sort of despawned in the floor.

It's been a year and that fucking bug hasn't been fixed yet. But we get more guns every patch, yay!

Not really to be honest. Sometimes you get lucky and when you click  tab your stats should go up and down normally. Other times when you hit a server they do not. Might try to favor some servers and stick with them once  you find a normal one. Maybe even pen and paper right it down so you don't forget and delete the ones on your favorites list afterwards that are causing issues.

OP Subj: no, its really not.

wow 20 min, cmon man, you got really lucky here, 20 min.

On stable ( I assume you on stable too)  I have got usually 12-15 min tops.

On a serious note here: on .49 stable there is a semi-reliable way do exist to deal with any environment conditions as new spawn, without server-hopping, and from any spawn location.

I am not gonna spoil it for you, figure it all out is part of the fun, I don't want to steal it from you.

If you still wanna spoils, lookup my other posts on subj, and connection to Hit Points.

I think the temperature system will get some fine-tuning as other things like disease are added and the environment naturally becomes more difficult to survive, but DayZ is a survival game. It isn't supposed to be easy to survive. :)

Changing into dry clothes doesnt help either. Hope this gets fixed in the future

Not really. By definition, when you have hypothermia, your body's "heating mechanic" becomes impaired/stops working. Changing into dry clothing helps hypothermia because when you are wet, you are losing body heat due to the temperature difference between the water and your skin , AKA same principle behind sweating (evaporation and heat diffusion). Dry clothing prevents this heat loss, but it doesn't magically make your body start generating heat again.

In order to treat hypothermia, you change into dry clothing, THEN apply gentle heat, either directly to the core (administer warm beverages), or externally (through physical contact.). This last method can be dangerous, as the second person can become hypothermic as well, as you are essentially borrowing their body heat to warm up the already-hypothermic subject. This is why you stick both parties into a sleeping bag or blanket, to minimize heat loss to the environment.

I honestly don't think the hypothermia mechanic is that punishing. You can still run across the map to NWAF without picking up a single item, if you get a spawn on the east or south coast. You also aren't likely to catch hypothermia if you are wearing anything that aren't the starting T-shirt. Personally i've only died from hypothermia once, and that was because I had to leave my PC for a while right after spawning in.
