Right now the only reason for me to play on a private shard would be the server hopping - and thats something that has to be dealt with anyways. Otherwise I will probably stick to the public hive: bigger loot economy, more servers available (I am choosy here) and no obscure house rules.

I will play a mix of both to start, just like i did in the mod. When i get tired of the shoot everything that moves crowd, I will move into a nice server that has stricter gun laws and when I crave some action, I will leave the hippie commune and so on.

I think both hives will have their pros an cons, mainly due to the odd rules in some private servers or the constant need to kill in public hives. It will make some players happy to finally be able to learn the quirks of Dayz and then be able to graduate into the public hives with a bit more of a fighting chance as opposed to how things are now.

I don't know much about the differences between the two.  Private = more power for the owner?  Can someone shed some light?

I'll try

On the Public hive all characters are connected to one database (well, two actually, 1st person only and 3rd person enabled servers).

Though things like tents, vehicles and bases will only save on one server and not cross over.

The greater choice of servers means that if your server goes down or is just having a bad day you can easily swap to another server and not have to start as a fresh spawn, It also makes it easy for friends from different parts of the world to find a low ping server that they can all play on.

On a Private shard your character will only save on that one server, this is good in that it prevents issues like server hopping and ghosting.

There will eventually be a global loot system that will monitor loot across all the servers and limit which kind of loot spawns accordingly, allowing them to make certain items extremely rare, such as high powered weapons, nvg's, helicopter parts, and medicine.

I think this will be a really interesting mechanic on the Public hive, promoting high value trading between strangers and large scale rivalries between groups on different servers.

Not even sure if Private hives will have the same system and even if they do it will be severely smaller in scale just due to it being limited to one server.

Server admins have very little power when running a Public server, this is to prevent abuse such as locking a server and farming for gear then going over to another server on the hive.

Basically they can only kick players and only with good reason, and because they have no access to logs it is very difficult for them to prove when someone is cheating, eventually the Devs will be releasing anticheat software that will help, but could be a while off.

Private server admins can kick, ban and lock as much as their heart desires as it only affects the players on that server, also they can set rules for their server such as no pvp, roleplay only, etc.

initially they wont have access to logs or the ability to add mods either but that will change when the overall security of the game has improved.

My personal opinion is that Private shards are great for people who want to be part of a close community and do provide better protection from cheaters, But in my experience from the mod they tend to get stale after a short while, due to seeing the same names everytime you log on.

The Public hive has a much greater sense of scale making it more unpredictable and for me, far more immersive, and if you play on official servers run by Bohemia you can completely avoid the chance of admin abuse.

I'll be more interested in Private shards when modding is allowed, though history tells me that the majority of modded servers will just break the whole concept of the game, there should be a few that shine through.

Thanks for editing - you could have told me atleast good sir ;)

Also when you edit a Poll without noticing the creator do it right next time please.

"I´ll stick to public hive" is nonsense since all option are indicating this - every Private Shard is connected to the public HIVE - i went ahead and changed this to "Not playing on private Shards!"

Public Hive generally refers to the single database that all Public servers are connected to, Private shards will not be connected to that database, they may be on the same machine, and ultimately controlled by Bohemia but saying that private shards are connected to the public hive is incorrect.

HIVE is the database every Server got to connect with - Shards are connected to this HIVE to distribute loot in the future for example. So yes a Private Shard will be connected somehow with the Public HIVE.

Shards, not hives. Private shard servers will still be connected to the public hive. This i.e. means that still the same rules for central loot economiy apply. There once was a good explanation of private shards, currently trying to find it.

It is important to understand what private shards entail for DayZ, and why they are different from "private hives" so well known from the Arma 2 mod.

Can:

  • Password protect the server
  • Operate a white list (using BEC)
  • Ban/Kick trouble makers
  • Define and enforce server gameplay rules (eg: DayZRP, PvE only, etc)

Can not:

  • Access or modify the base game configuration (amount of loot, amount of dynamic server events, vehicles (when they are implemented), etc)
  • Violate the naming convention declared in the hosting rules (these will be updated to reflect the new private shard capabilities)
  • Have access to the database itself
  • Operate any 3rd party “Admin tools” aside from the approved BEC (BattlEye Extended Controls)
  • Access debug logs (currently these are unavailable for both user privacy, and performance)
  • Exceed current maximum player limits per instance

By saying that Private shards are connected to the Public Hive/database you are suggesting that character data will transfer from a private server to any other server. It wont.

Characters will only cross over on the Public servers, also known as the Public Hive.

I was going with a terminology that most players are familiar with. It's not really nonsense if it gets the point across to the majority of people.

You are technically wrong though as the public hive is indeed a hive.

Although DayZ Standalone is only in alpha, thousands of public servers already exist for players to use. DayZ servers are all connected to a central database called the 'Hive', which is responsible for remembering character data and allowing players to use their same survivor on different servers.

  • A public hive are the common servers, connected to the central database, run and operated by BIS.
  • A private shard operates on a separate shard of the central database (run by the devs), this allows communities to have their own private servers without it affecting the main hive and without giving server owners direct access to the database. The system is also flexible enough so that a group of servers could run on this shard of the hive too (or just one single server). This gives the best of both having a database and having a private community, without those private communities affecting the main database. Players would only be able to jump between servers on that private shard

http://dayz.gamepedia.com/Servers

Over the next few weeks we will be working with our game server provider partners to begin the final steps required for the central hive, and their respective back ends to support renting private shards of the DayZ central hive, which will enable dedicated communities to create their own private DayZ worlds.

You basically say it yourselfe - they are ALL connected to the HIVE.

The poll is about Shards here - not HIVEs - so in the context of the poll for me its nonsense to talk about a HIVE no matter what type you think you mean.

Guess its then up to the Admins to take action and ban them.

No sir. All you do is suggesting actually. All i say is that the Private Servers are somehow connected to the Public HIVE. Means Character data etc. is not stored server/client side but in the Public HIVE database. And that seems totally correct with the informations we get from the DEVs

Yes, they are connected to it, but that's not the point of it. I don't think I can explain it any clearer than the quotes I used.

Your poll is titled  "What are you doing when Private Shards are available?"

It is very much within the context of the poll to consider the public hive. The way you set it up it seemed like there is no other option than to play on the private shards as Fluxley rightly pointed out.

Even if the poll was titled "What type of private shards do you intend to play on?", it would be reasonable to include the option "I won't play on any private shards".

I agree with you but there is no reason to use the word HIVE. Thats why i changed it from "I´ll stick to public hive" to "Not playing on private Shards!".

I would play PVE and when I get bored from it I'll go for PVP, when I'm bored from both I would go to public and then back to PVE.

A nice circle if you ask me.
