Top ten things you should pick up in a survival situation, but often don't in DayZ.

Top ten things you should pick up in a survival situation, but often don't in DayZ.
In no particular order.

1.Rope(super useful for multiple tasks, can be deconstructed for smaller fibers)

2.Knife(duh)

3.Clothing(admittedly not as much as before)

4.Books(could always burn 'em, ya know lightweight firewood)

5.Hat(If it was really cold out, you would definetly want this over a ballastic helmet at first)

6.Duct Tape(really almost as useful as rope)

7.Burlap sack(ya know to put stuff in)

8.Sticks(trust me, you wouldn't be running around like a chicken with your head cut off,

impervious to injury on rough terrain.)  You would break as many bones as bugs have.

9.Food

10.Canteens/water bottle

Was kinda hard to think of 10 things, off the top of my head, that are in game, but often overlooked.

Discuss if guess.  What things do you often pass up, that might be lifesavers IRL?

What about antibiotics and water purification tablets? Infections from cuts/scrapes along the journey could possibly turn into a life threatening situation. And water purification tablets, because in reality, running water wouldn't always be readily available, and drinking pond/creek water that is untreated could be an issue. Though you could boil the water if you're able to get a fire going. But what about a gun and ammo for protection? Never know who or what you'll run into along the way.

If I deem it worthwhile I usually pick up all the stuff listed above except for duct tape and books for obvious reasons.

Alcoholic tincture would be an essential item to pick up if all its real life necessities were in the game.

Only if your Very Stupid about it xD

--------------------------------------------------

Matches Seem Something People Leave Behind alot in Game But would Be useful ^_^

Not Sure i have Ever Passed on Rope, Knife, or Burlap Sack though, I take it anytime i Find it With Improvised Bags, fishingPole, & Bow and Skinning Animals

its Realy Useful if not for Self But to Give other Survivors

And dont Most Players Wear Hats all the time?

Everyone i Have Seen is Usualy in a Hat and Better Clothing as soon as Possible

I was thinking more along the lines of things you might not have space for, or that don't do much, if anything, in the game.  Things that would be really useful, but hey you are going for a "look".

I don't know, just stuff you often don't grab every time you see it, or just don't have space and it doesn't always come in handy for game play purposes.

Same here but I do pick up the tincture. I like to keep a limited number of rags on me and the tincture keeps them pristine.

I think of Rambo.

  1. A knife (almost always skip it)
  2. Bow (almost always skip it)
  3. Arrows (almost always skip it)
  4. Chem lights (I break them and leave them so others can enjoy the colors, rarely do I pick them up)
  5. Bullets (leave them a lot if they don't match my gun, might need to cauterize my would!)
  6. Matches (I leave a lot of them)
  7. Walkie Talkie (how are you going to tell Murdoch that you're coming for him?)
  8. Cargo Pants (I skip them if there's something better)

... and that's pretty much all Rambo needed, a lot of which I skip in DayZ.

Why take duct tape? For what I read everywhere its still useless..?

These are things you should pick up in a REAL survival situation.  Whether they do something in the game is besides the point.  At the very least discuss how the game could use these items.

As someone trained (and as an instructor in) Wilderness Survival (this is assuming you already have the proper clothing):

1) Multi-tool. The more uses, the better, but don't go overboard. A multi-tool can open a door (or just take it off it's hinges), open a can, start a fire, cut a branch, punch holes in leather or cloth, etc etc. Almost anything you need done, a multi-tool can do.

2) "flint and steel"-esque firestarter. Effective, always works, waterproof

3) Sheath Knife. Again, no need to go overboard. I have a 4 in long Mora Knife. Cost me $25, imported from Sweden, one of the best purchases I've ever made. For "medium" tasks (skinning, shaving sticks, cutting cloth or leather, etc)

4) Alternate firestarter. I use a Zippo

5) Rain gear. I carry a US Army poncho rolled up and tied to the bottom of my kit. It can cover my entire body, and be used as both an improvised tent and a sleeping bag, if I include the liner

6) Warm hat. I've got a fleece pile cap in my kit. Scrunches up inside my cup. Love it

7) Extra socks, preferably wool. Fit inside my cap, which is inside my cup.

8) Alternate raingear/waterproof sheeting. I carry disposable ponchos, one or two safety blankets, and some industrial garbage bags inside my kit. I can make a shelter with them, and stay warm with the safety blanket

9) Water carriers, preferably metal. You can boil water to drink inside of them, and they won't crack or break. The only downside is heat transduction (they will get hot or cold really fast), but the utility outweighs the cons in my opinion. I've got both a bottle with an S-clip attached, and a metal cup that I also use as a small pot.

10) Sundries. In my kit, stuffed amid-st/inside other things, I carry tea bags, sugar packets, salt packets, honey packets, bundles of matches, 15ft roll of duct tape, safety pins, etc. The food is for morale (nothing beats a cup of hot tea on a rainy day), the salt, sugar, and honey is also for 1st Aid (all three can be used to clean wounds, and can be eaten to provide energy to fight off shock). All of the other items have various uses.

My survival kit also has a compass and whistle (both attached with a lanyard), 50 feet of 550 paracord woven onto it (MOLLE compatible), a couple of glowsticks, etc. My entire ensemble fits on a "web" belt, and weighs about 5 lbs. It is very comfortable, and I almost never go into the woods without it.

Real life survival in a Chernarus region? I'm assuming picking "standard survival kits" isn't allowed, since those contain more than the top 10 essentials.

1. Knife with a scabbard, hopefully the scabbard contains a sharpening stone

2. 10+ feet of strong non-nylon rope

3. Flint and steel (preferrably the steel is in the form of a small saw, that sh*t works like crazy)

4. 3 feet of nylon line

5. Several fish hooks

6. Matches in a waterproof container

7. Antibiotics

8. Medicinal alcohol for sterilization

9. Hatchet

10. Waterproof pack to carry it all in

Just started playing 1pp as a full on survival character (3pp as fun PvP).

After trying different combos of weapons (bow and sawn off shotty then 1911) finally settled on Xbox with holo sight for hunting (only have 20 bolts at present) and an FNX45 (just found my second mag!!) with red dot sight and flashlight attachment (so if I do need it I already have my gun out!!). Need a gun just in case I run into a bandit!!

In regards to survival equipment, fishing pole (with baited hook and a spare hook in boony hat), machete, axe, matches, rope (to make bow if needed or backpack if my hunting backpack gets ruined), still got some chicken feathers to make arrows in case I run out of bolts), full fireplace kit (wood plus stone), spare sticks, shovel for worms, sewing kit, binoculars (great for scouting), compass (traveling far west and north so not many towns to get bearings), med kit (bandages, morphine and rags), canteen, 4 protector cases to store my hard earned loot and for the first time found a press vest!!

I don't grab books as rags are more versatile (fireplace, splint and bandaging), I would grab duct tape (if it had any uses!!), found a machete works better then a knife (sharpening sticks for arrows, butchering animals, chopping sticks from shrubs/bushes), and will try and find an alcoholic tincture to test on bandages and rags now!!

As for food, been dining on fish, chicken, boar and deer steaks...yum yum yum!! I haven't had to eat tinned food in ages but I do eat fresh fruit when I venture into town!!

1. You'd never EVER ditch your flashlight.

2. Boots and socks. Your feet hurt = you can't move = you're fucked.

3. Matches. Try lighting a fire without them: bugger that.

4. The warmest hat you can find.

5. Food. ANYTHING you could find that was edible, you'd take (or eat on the spot).

6. Waterproofs

7. You'd certainly make room for a gun if you found one.

8. KNIFE!

9. Rope/string/twine of any kind would always be useful. Wouldn't turn down duct tape either.

10. Blankets. Why aren't these in DayZ yet?

5.Hat(If it was really cold out, you would definetly want this over a ballastic helmet at first) - I'm found of the black beanie and radar caps

6.Duct Tape(really almost as useful as rope) - Granted, absolute useless as of current, so no need to pick up.

7.Burlap sack(ya know to put stuff in) - Again, I already got the rope.

8.Sticks(trust me, you wouldn't be running around like a chicken with your head cut off,

impervious to injury on rough terrain.)  You would break as many bones as bugs have. - Of course, how else am I going to fix my broken leg when I'm looting the tower in the fire station? Not to mention, rope and sack.

9.Food - Um... Really? I'm surely not the only person who's picking this stuff up?

10.Canteens/water bottle - See above

I have no idea why you would think people are not picking up food and water?

I think people are still missing the point of this thread.  I am not talking about things that would be useful, but are not in the game.  I am talking about things that all of us often(do not read as always) pass up for whatever reasons, in game.  Whether the game has given a use for them yet or not.

Sometimes our playstyles dictate what we pick up and don't pick up.  Like the guys that just gotta look like they dropped in on a military mission.

The food and water thing, well, ya gotta admit that at times they haven't been super necessary in some stages of this alpha, or it is just so abundant that we are sure we'll find more.

And maybe we could come up with some ideas for the game to use them.
