Mate, they are probably just a cellar.

 

I, for one, would NEVER dig into the ground to build a base IRL, and probably won't in-game. Too much work, and too many things can go wrong (cave-ins, namely, are eminently possible without proper support. I am not an engineer, so I have no idea what supports are needed.)

The cave talk gives me the idea of building a rock or wood survival shelter. A pickaxe, a shovel, and a hatchet could all be use to make different strength ones.

Like a grass and stick one vs. a rock one, and so on. And if they add snow to the game… My inner geek is freaking out.

 

Once persistence is fully working I want thing like this.
