StarLord (DayZ)

Zombie Classification

Recommended Posts

Something I always think back on when playing any video game with Z's in it. In my mind you've got 3 real choices.

28 Weeks later zombies -          Very hunterish, medium speed, pretty dangerous.

Dawn of the Dead [Remake] -   Pretty hunterish, very fast, very dangerous.

Walking Dead -                         Not-so hunterish, slow, dangerous only in hordes.

A simple muse me thinks to something of far greater implications for the world as we know it !

More of just a thought. I like the mix of Zombies in DayZ. However it would be neat to see a horde I guess. How would you rank the DayZ zombies?

1) They aren't "zombies". They are normal human beings infected with a disease ( my favorite is a mutated rabies virus)

2) this means slow, shambling "zombies" are right out

3) This also means they should be able to sprint, and do practically everything a  "normal" human being can do, like climb ladders, open doors, etc.

4) This means, however, they should not be superhuman; no 1000 meter eagle eyes, superhuman hearing, or stupid degree of resilience.

Living infected, so 28 days/weeks zombies.  They definitely aren't Jiangshi or Draugers.  Don't think they'ed fall under Revenants either.  They aren't simply Drugged and Brainwashed, so they aren't Zombie zombies, which are only dangerous if they got brain damaged before being exhumed.

the Zeds in the SA right now are of a 4th kind.... they have better vision than Superman. Apparently they all went and had laser eye/scope surgery right before the outbreak.. But they are not dangerous and pretty dumb..as I had about 6 at once running in circles next to me as I hacked them up one by one with a shovel..(190 hits later lol)

And also near infinite stamina.

I'd like to know what the boundaries are going to be for them in future, it doesn't make sense for them to be able to run all that long unless the lack of food is because they chow down on all of it, their bodies just shouldn't be able to function.

Like with 28 Days Later eventually the infected started starving to death, unless they come out and say they're infected through some supernatural means they need to limit them greatly in future.

Also can we all just call them zombies? It's a fairly broad term, there's no need to have zombie games and infected games when they're an incredibly minor detail from being the same thing.

There's not much of a need to call them infected when who they were is most definitely dead, infected suggests curable which is silly in this game world. They're basically running corpses with animalistic urges and nothing more. They're still just dead people just not decaying like standard living dead type zombies.

Could be a mix of the three in the game? Numerous slowpokes, and about the same number of fast/medium running zeds as there are now.

Infinite stamina? No, they slow down after a short period of time. The players, on the other hand, do have infinite stamina.

We call them zombies for brevity, but to be technical, they're infected humans per the lore and words directly from Dean's mouth.

It doesn't seem slow down so much as it does get bored though if you go near them again or stop they start running again...

Still they're part of a subclass in the zombie genre, so zombie isn't incorrect. Going deeper in to the genre and calling them undead would be wrong a zombie label isn't really it's just not the complete truth.

Just annoying seeing all the snappy comments about ugh they're not zombies you cretin! Like who really cares? We know what people mean when they say zombies or infected or zeds etc etc just stop being nitpicky. (not aimed at you, that kind of people)

Anyway they need to run out of stamina and be done for a few minutes not have a few second timer before they can run full speed again, same with the player of course but a healthy person should be able to run away from a zombie easily unless they're fat and slow.

If you aggro one, run in one flat direction at a constant speed (preferably a sprint) and note how the zombie keeps pace with you. After a short period of time (under 30 sec, I think) the zombie will slow down to a regular run speed instead of a sprint and will maintain this pace until you put enough distance to break the aggro. If you downgrade your run speed from sprint to regular run when the zombie does, you'll notice that the both of you will maintain the same speed and distance from either other. If you keep to sprint, you will out pace the zombie and leave it's aggro range eventually.

If the servers could handle it, I think that horde(that can't be dealt by no one man\woman, and need to be avoided) "migrating" through the area, would have been a nice touch, that adds a nice dynamic to player interaction.

I don't notice that at all because most zombies chase me like 20 minutes XD I usually have to sprint for 5-10 minutes before they get far away enough to finally not be able to see me but even then they seem to keep running in the same direction until they do see me and the chase will be on again.

I hope they severely nerf their vision in future, like 30-50m radius but good hearing so if you knock anything over or throw stuff around you're gonna get swarmed.

Try my suggestion, and keep an eye on the zombie by turning your head back constantly. You'll see they break faster than you think.
