Chaingunfighter 917 Posted October 2, 2014 In a newly posted screenshot by DayZ Lead Artist Chris Torchia, we get a clear look at some new zombie pathfinding, as well as a very early WIP of some building (likely the prison). However, looking in the bottom left-hand corner, by the SKS icon, we can see a "hidden" preview of the new derringer that was confirmed a few weeks ago. It's quite small and hard to make out the fine details, but I believe it may be possible to identify the gun, under the presumption that it's a real gun. My best guess (for now) would be this one: It's an RG17 .38 Special Derringer. There are clearly some differences but this is the closest I could find for now.Gews probably knows better.

And, of course, mega churches do exist everywhere. I'd love to believe that it's a bunker, but if they had good underground systems working I think they'd announce it. (It also doesn't look as featureless as most of the other Chernarussian military buildings, though I can't say for sure). I'm going to go with it's part of the prison for now. Simply because it matches the style of the models we've had for a while and they've been putting some work into it. Either way, it's a brand new large structure that'll probably be of significance, so I'm excited all around (new buildings in general are some of the coolest things)Hello there You cheeky minx, well spotted. Chaingunfighter 917 Posted October 3, 2014 Unless having it in your hands does not look the same as holding any other pistol in your hands, I don't see much use for it.It takes up very slots and quite possibly uses a powerful round (.357 or .45 ACP, though it could be .22LR, .380 ACP, or 9x19mm, too), so it'd be an awesome last-resort weapon. Plus, it takes up little space, so if you were going for a lightweight setup but wanted some backup firepower it's a good alternative to larger pistols. It's not going to be some god-tier weapon, but that's because it's not really supposed to be. Derringers have always been used for the sole purpose of an easily concealable backup weapon, and the use will be no different in DayZ. However, they ARE working on new pistol animations, so I wouldn't be surprised if the derringer was different when held.

From those doorways I'd say it's military unless they're going to 'plug in' a more fitting model in the doorways. They can always add in small details later, such as overhead pipes/wiring, wall sconces/torches, ect.*edit*It's a gun that doesn't need a mag that gives me TWO shots instead of one chambered shot before needing to dig around in my pack and reload. That's two zombies I can put down to give me time to reload to deal with the swarm that's coming my way, and that's assuming you don't Black Beard it and carry multiple loaded derringers. Chaingunfighter 917 Posted October 3, 2014 Hence, my post.Ohhh, okay, I misread. Though it's definitely a pretty situational weapon, it's far from useless. When I saw your post I thought you meant that adding it at all was pointless, not that it just won't be of too much use to most players. That's true, but we do need these kinds of weapons in order to make the advanced/powerful/useful weapons more special.

Chaingunfighter 917 Posted October 3, 2014 (edited) Yup - that was the major influence on my design :) I'm thinking about a couple of colors - a chromed one, this black one and maybe a hello kitty one :P Chrome is a must (For A Few Dollars More, anyone?), and a Hello Kitty derringer, while odd (to say the least :P), would actually be quite an interesting find, akin to the Engraved 1911. Plus, it sort of adds to BOTH the female character (stereotypical, I know, but many people like stuff for that reason) and the epic Hello Kitty fan we all truly are on the inside (Don't lie :)). So I actually say yes to this one, it's really not as crazy an idea as some might think. Oh, and PLEEASEEEE do one with wooden grips (even if it's just the chrome one w/ em), that would make my world complete (for now :P) Edited October 3, 2014 by Chaingunfighter

That's true, but we do need these kinds of weapons in order to make the advanced/powerful/useful weapons more special. Personally I agree with Grindstone... unless there is some special hide in your hands animation/mechanic to give it some sort of hidy tactical advantage... like maybe not showing up in inventory when people look (or something along those lines). One hit kill or something else etc. Then yes it practically is useless, sorry shouldn't say useless but as useful as a splitting axe (I would even debat a splitting axe is still more useful). Aka the second you find something better it goes out the window. I guess a crowbar would be a better example. Obviously role play or personal preference limitation players would find exception to this. Now if weapons are even MORE rare, while this would be one of the more common guns found then it would probably have more usefulness but even with the automatic weapon loot reduction they still aren't that rare. Now if weapons are even MORE rare, while this would be one of the more common guns found then it would probably have more usefulness but even with the automatic weapon loot reduction they still aren't that rare.Based on the fact that it's an RG17 (for the most part), it'll most likely be shooting .357 magnum, which is a very powerful round (the most powerful pistol caliber in the game). It doesn't need a magazine and you can fire off both shots in an extraordinary amount of time. The gun would presumably take up few slots, and reloading would be much quicker than with the Magnum, so it's definitely not the worst self defense gun there is.I, for one, like the idea of stuffing the Derringer into your boots or a possible ankle holster and quickly drawing it while on the ground or being held up, something you could only do with compact pistols. However, in respect, it's pretty much like the P1 & CR-527 at the times of their inclusion. The P1 was added long after the CR75 which is superior (8 rounds vs 15 rounds, and the CR75 has many attachments), and the CR-527 was added after the SKS & AKM. There's no real incentive to use either of them unless you happen to find them before an upgrade. That's the point of weapons like this, they're "on the path" guns that aren't really meant to be used as endgame weapons at all (from either upgrading through attachments or simply having powerful traits). And yes, rarity will be the largest dictating factor later on. "Good" guns like the SKS, AKM, CR75, FNX-45, Magnum, and whatnot, will all be rather rare, with guns like the CR527, P1, and derringer being somewhat common (comparatively). And it is still true that the gun would be good for roleplay. I mean, it might not be the best weapon in its class, but it allows you to create a character based around said weapon. That, and it adds to the overall variety of weapons, and you can't deny that derringers are pretty damn cool, however impractical (in this case.) Either way, it was a spare time project, so you can't really complain that it was being added, because there was no definitive intent for it to appear in the first place. If this was a "spare time" project and they got that much progress on it, then hopefully the FN FAL,G3 and other "Spare time" items may make it down the pipeline soon. FN FAL & G3 weren't necessarily spare time weapons. In fact, Chris stated that they were on the list of weapons they wanted to do before release. Granted, that was long before the list was finalized, so whether it's guaranteed or not I'm not sure, but I wouldn't lose hope.Keep in mind that the derringer likely has few (if any) attachments and is a relatively small gun, so it's definitely NOT the most complicated weapon to create, but I do hope we get some more "spare time" weapons. Though I can almost guarantee it'll mean more than a few super quick deaths of unsuspecting bandits.

As cool as a .45 ACP one would be, I don't think it'd see much use. Plus, the RG17 is a .38 Special derringer, so it wouldn't make sense either way.

Further it doesn't specify that ALL pistols will be affected, though it does seem logical, nor does it say that the one-handed will be the only pose. Now, to re-address my point, a two-shot low-accuracy highly-specialized pistol will have little to no use other than "better than nothing". A Derringer is not designed to take the place of a light-weight combat pistol. It is intended for high concealability, including when held. You can't hide even a Mak in the palm of your hand. If the animation pose with a Derringer looks the same as when holding a 1911, regardless of the number of hands involved, then it is a basically useless pistol other than the "better than nothing" option. Even among those of us who carry concealed on a daily basis, Derringers are hardly ever utilized due to low round count and poor accuracy, despite the extremely low weight and ease of concealment. That being said, I know balance will come in the future and further animation modifications as well. And obviously everything is personal preference, so YMMV. I was just pointing out how this is basically a fluff item unless there is actually something done to make it useful over an actual combat pistol. I will be paying attention to the development of this item and hope for something useful to come from it.
