Issen (DayZ) 1 Posted September 28, 2014 So, I read Im required to have a knife, bayonet or the like. I have SKS Bayonet and the Bayonet for Mosin, none of them works for skinning a shot animal. Any bugs or am I required a kitchen knife?
GrappleX 354 Posted September 28, 2014 I dont believe either of those bayonets work for skinning animals. I know that kitchen knives and machetes both work, and i believe that the M9 bayonet, (the M4 one) will work also.

Which is a real shame, that's my favorite blade.
kakysas666 191 Posted September 28, 2014 knife or machete. And there was a bug where you can skin boar TWICE. Not sure if they fixed in this recent update. I doubt that. Bugemia breaks things, not fixes them.

chompster 171 Posted September 28, 2014 SKS and mosin bayonets are for stabbing, not cutting they don't have sharp edges. The M4 bayonet should work when it doesn't, so that's a bug.

I could have sworn that I skinned a cow with an SKS bayonet, that was awhile ago though so that may have changed. It is just as knife like as the kitchen knife. true, it's weird how little meat you get from a deer. you get almost as much from a chicken, and that's hilarious. What is this chicken? I have yet to see a chicken in game. I am beginning to think chickens are a myth. Edited September 28, 2014 by Barnabus
Abram_ 40 Posted September 28, 2014 I only ever get two skins from Prestine blades, but not often.. Maybe 10% of them.

barnabus 1708 Posted September 29, 2014 (edited) We need to be able to skin animals with axes to.You wouldn't get all that much by using an axe, skinning and quartering is a lot more delicate, for that kind of work an axe may as well be a baseball bat. A worn knife is still much sharper than a worn axe. You need the right tool for the right job. Edited September 29, 2014 by Barnabus

Whyherro123 2283 Posted September 29, 2014 SKS and mosin bayonets are for stabbing, not cutting they don't have sharp edges. The M4 bayonet should work when it doesn't, so that's a bug. Wrong. An SKS bayonet is a "Knife bayonet".We need to be able to skin animals with axes to. Also wrong. There are no axes in-game with actual "sharp" edges. The Splitting axe is a wedge, little more, and the Fire Axe has the incorrect blade profile. All you would do with either of those axes is smash the meat. I've skinned animals with a tomahawk before. It is a handaxe with a blade profile almost exactly the same as a knife ( AKA really damn narrow and thin), as it is first and foremost a hand-to-hand weapon. It was actually more effective than a knife, as I was able to skin, gut, quarter, and break the bones with a single tool. (Vs multiple skinning knives.) However, this thin blade profile means a tomahawk is very inefficient at splitting/cutting large amounts of wood. That is why I carry multiple tools on me IRL ( multitool, sheath knife, tomahawk, folding saw). IF you use a tool for something it isn't designed for, it is likely to break.

Doesn't have to be the best cut meat in the world as long as its edible when you cook it. Probably wouldn't be the smartest way but when your starving really what choice do you got? Especially when they start to cut back on certain items. Well its only a matter of time at this point when they put a tomahawk in. Iv been expecting some version of it for awhile now. Ill be ok with not being able to cut wood with it as long as it can skin and be an effective combat tool as a trade off. Should be like the machete to where you can put it in your pack with not many space issues. Its to bad we don't have belt utility yet cause it would make allot more sense as a belt tool for the Tomahawk. You wouldn't be able to "take a chunk of meat" from the animal. You would be better off tearing off meat and skin with your bare hands, or using a shard of broken glass (sharpest edges in the universe, by the way). On a related note, why are kitchen knives so difficult to find? Seriously. How many people lived in South Zagoria again?

In a realistic scenario, I wouldn't have to search for a kitchen knife.Thats true but i assume they don't want them to be that common as realistic as it may be. Maybe they will increase the drop rate or add a few more varieties? Who knows though when that will happen.

It looks exactly like the "official" blade bayonet that really is permanently (usually) affixed under the barrel. Also, why have a blade (narrow cross section, thin edges) if it isn't a knife bayonet? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/55/SKS_bayonet.JPG
