irishroy 1347 Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) Well, in the DEV-stream it was revealed, that we will be able to build shelters, and so I post a suggestion/thread I had in my head for quite some time now ;)(Maybe when the DEVs are looking for shelter-models, they probably stumble across the word "Bushcraft" on youtube, like I did. ;) Many videos focus on "how to survive the first few days", and building a shelter is one of the main things. I will leave some videos down) The Tarp(not the usual DayZ-trading-tarp-trap) First of all, the tarp is some kind of a jack-of-all-trades-item. However, it could be found in different sizes, colours and maybe even materials. But also military (camo-ed like Flecktarn, etc.) and civilian types (in 1 colour like blue, dark green and brown)Of course there are different sizes in reality, but for gameplay-balance one size would do the job, too, I think. Civilian: Military: The Player could build a shelter, and then further improve it with a tarp. These shelters would work almost like a tent, but degrade over time. (So for X server-restarts the shelter looses -Y durability like water-proof, etc. etc., which leads to the result, that items inside the shelter degrade quicker and become ruined/useless) ==> Uses of a tarp:some kind of over-ponchothe player could sit down and wrap the tarp around him, if it's coldbuilding and further improving(=making waterproof) shelterscarrying/dragging wounded/unconscious players Some shelter-ideas:A lean-to-shelter (Storage: 30-50?) A debris-shelter.Storage: 30-40? With a tarp you could also set up something like a "free-hanging-tarp-roof". Storage: 40-60? Then you could "upgrade it with a hammock" for more storage ;) (+10-15) Another Tarp-idea: (German video, but it is shown how to fold the tarp, etc.) Another type of shelter: Bushcraft-videos overall:The Dakota Firehole Edited September 28, 2014 by irishroy
odin_lowe 3686 Posted September 19, 2014 If any of this gets into the game, I'll be happy! All of those suggestions seem fantastic to me. On a side note, you probably know about the game "The Forest" right? If not, check it out. The survival aspect of the game is pretty nice. Back to DayZ, with bears and wolves confirmed, wilderness survival will probably be a challenge. And I like that. Devs are doing an amazing job imo. :beans: To you, and them. Stirlo 0 Posted September 20, 2014 What a amazing suggestion. I think as said once Base Build game style starts to take off. Tarps would be a fantastic addition!

Swarzey 12 Posted October 11, 2014 Love the idea. With tents being so hard to find for most, being able to create a makeshift shelter that holds not even half the space of a tent would be awesome; gives them some sort of camp while they search for the bigger one. Just simply crafting a pile of sticks and applying them to a tarp and rope would be enough and as the game develops, modifications could be made to improve it. You certainly get my beans for this! :beans:
joe_mcentire 2074 Posted January 2, 2015 (edited) can't stress this enough. a tarp would be (imo) one of the five most important things to have in a survival situation. so much room for activities!makeshift...bag, shelter, stash, trap, water shield, weather protection, container, poncho.... Draco122 412 Posted January 2, 2015 I think I just found the perfect video that illustrates the construction of a tent with tarps:

Crafting something simple like sticks, tarp, and rope would give players a temporary base while searching for bigger tents. Plus, adding modifications as the game progresses would be awesome. It’s all about enhancing the survival experience!⬤

Makeshift shelters are already part of the game...https://dayz.fandom.com/wiki/Tarp_Shelter The idea is really good, too bad that you can't put them anywhere that isn't perfectly flat, like other tents, turrets and fences. This is what should be changed: a more "permissive" "buildability" on uneven terrain (mainly inside the woods).

Hi, I'll add it to our internal feedback doc, it's a good point, thanks for mentioning it.
Captain Brash 5 Posted August 7 A 1000* yes Tarp systems are super fun to use irl and more options for the personal survivalist play style would be awesome. Be great if you could roll them up and strap them to some bags, rather than taking up inventory space too. So the disadvantage is lower stamina and a larger profile but they don't necessarily take up space in your pack.
munchie7777 2 Posted August 17 I sigend in today just suggest making tarps more useful and it seems people have been asking for this for a while. It should be considered one of the most coveted and useful items in the game, but with how it is in game, it pretty much useless. My suggestions: 1. It should just be "a tarp". Not stackable in 4 pieces. That doesn't make any sense. Please make it just one big tarp. 2. There should be a few different kinds of tarps. Canvas (different colors) and plastic (green, black, grey). 3. Turn in into a poncho. Knife + tarp = poncho. (or turn poncho back into a tarp with Leather Repair kit). 4. Turn it into a backpack, like a leather backpack but canvas or plastic. Leather Repair Kit + Tarp = Backpack 5. Turn it into a shelter. 5 long sticks + 1 tarp = Tarp shelter. Once built, you should be able to roll up the tarp shelter and put it in one of the shoulder slots so you can carry around a quick, portable shelter to get out of the elements. 6. Knife + tarp = canvas scraps to make a ghillie. There should also be a blanket added in as well. It should work like a 3 tier system: 1. Leather stuff is top tier. Best durability, water resistance, etc. 2. Canvass/plastic is medium tier. Not a durable. Canvass gets wet easier and plastic come in bright colors. 3. Blankets would be lowest tier. These goods could be made with a sewing kit instead of a leather repair kit. Least durable and get soaked. They also come in crazy varieties, from plain colors to having silly patterns like fire engines, frogs, space men, etc.
