karlkurtz32 59 Posted September 15, 2014 So, I often sit on the hill to the west of NEAF and watch the ATC tower from a far distance with binoculars. Sometimes its fun to watch others interact/die, othertimes just feels like recon. Either way, I'll often stand in the same spot for 10 minutes just watching. Yesterday I was doing that very thing. Standing there with binoculars watching from far away, no movement, nothing. I notice my binoculars start going out of focus and then suddenly a zombie pops up and smacks the crap out of me. Needless to say I was startled. So my question is, how far could he have seen me from? He would have to had noticed me from 1000+ meters away and ran across the entire airfield and then up that huge hill. Or... He could have spawned in front of me. But does that happen? Thoughts? PS, here is a view of where I was standing...https://www.dropbox.com/s/mink0unbikxxph9/NEAF_overwatch_view.png?dl=
DerDuderich 149 Posted September 15, 2014 (edited) Zombies are just buggy as hell. They can spot you over ridiculous distances at the moment. Often I come by a random village more than a kilometer away and yet zombies come chasing me. At other times zombies standing a couple meters away will ignore me. Hopefully this will change with the improved AI in the enxt update. Edited September 15, 2014 by DerDuderich
Death By Crowbar 1213 Posted September 15, 2014 I've logged a bug where it appeared as though zombies I was observing from as far as 800m away (farther than you can see with the unaided eye) would aggro and come after me. Also keep in mind some do wander, and if you aggro one I have no idea how the aggro radius nor timer works, but sometimes it seems as though it's infinite. Also a player may have aggroed one, had it chase them, then lost aggro but the zed was either close enough to you or started to wander and pathed close enough to you to notice you. There's so many factors, including things that are known to be bugs or partially implemented, it's hard to say exactly what you were dealing with. Always be on your guard! kitthegreat 43 Posted September 15, 2014 Were you playing on a 'veteran' server? Zombies have increased view distance on these servers.
sai (DayZ) 137 Posted September 15, 2014 If you look at zombies they can agro towards you from a long distance. Idk if that's been fixed yet, I've not played in months.
evil koala 22 Posted September 15, 2014 Where do you think the term "dead eye" comes from? :P
geoffdeath 43 Posted September 15, 2014 don't know if its coincidence but i have found when you look at a zed directly from a distance they seem to see the sparkle in your eyes and comes a running from some luv. the infected seem to be a bit more strange of late. i spotted a pair playing leap frog along the south coast a few dayz ago.that and the zed that died mid star jump while teleporting through a wall and the 3 zeds a saw stuck against a invisible wall in the middle of a field. had the idea that they should change the sound of the animal hoofs to the benny hill music when the animal is being chased by a pack of zeds to complete the picture as they run past you :)
Zombie Milkman 167 Posted September 15, 2014 (edited) My favorite part of that is when the zombie leans back and you just know he's making his little roar with half raised hands, then comes barreling for you. It reminds me of the scene from Monty Python/Holy Grail where the knight rushes the wedding guards at the gate from a long way off. They see him coming but he always seems far away, then at the last second he leaps on them from no where. BTW, if you ever spend time watching them, notice how fast they close on you (easily 2x speed) and how they seem to spring up slopes that cause you to slow to a crawl sometimes. Then as they get closer game-physics seem to adjust to something more believable, almost as if the devs were helping the zombies cheat to make it harder for us while they work on the mythical better zombie. ld-airgrafix 403 Posted September 16, 2014 They see you as long as nothing obstructs their raycast line. Not sure with dayz engine but in unity a simple script can control the length of raycast line.

Not sure with dayz engine but in unity a simple script can control the length of raycast line.Never understood this correctly though. Is this a single ray, wedge or cone?because i've crossed paths with them several times out in a field and they don't come after me. Other times i've crossed with a solid wall in between (no gaps in lower section to roll through) and they come screaming like a bat out of hell. The times they don't see me they're usually like 10mil on my screen (far) and also slightly up topography, so not sure if it's like a single ray that you can't break. But you do not know where that zombie spawned exactly. The chances are it spawned in dead space after the demise of its parent within the 600 yard range.Zombie Vision starts at 6min 15sec
Bad Company 140 Posted September 16, 2014 General survival tip; always pretend that you're being chased by T1000 terminators
CANUCKinNZ 108 Posted September 16, 2014 It could have been chasing a deer or other player and then diverted to you. It's all pretty random right now.

kitthegreat 43 Posted September 16, 2014 Wobo video. Not sure which one but could be one of the top tips for '0.xx' series. Not tested it myself but willing to trust Agathor.
ld-airgrafix 403 Posted September 16, 2014 I would prefer a collider over current raycast system or at least until they get it sorted out.
anderswhk 23 Posted September 16, 2014 They do spot you from very far away. Last night night i was hunting some bandits in Berezino, standing behind some rocks at the beach next to the cranes at the harbour. Zombies were spawning literally half a km behind me, and would instantly start running at me, giving away my position
Ben_uk 24 Posted September 16, 2014 (edited) I would prefer far more zombies, but all of them have quite poor eyesight. It would create quite tense moments walking through a town, having to pick your way through them. I'd say a max sight range of maybe 30-50 metres. I'd also say that if you have ran around several corners and are being chased by a zombie, they shouldn't be able to lock on and track your every move. If you go into a building say, they shouldn't follow you in, unless they actually see you enter. Edited September 16, 2014 by Ben_uk
q.S Sachiel 470 Posted September 16, 2014 they're really just infected so i suppose good eyesight can be accepted, but i always figured zombies would have an enhanced sense of smell and sound.Still, we play the cards we're dealt. Good to see the info in that vid above.
calabam 55 Posted September 16, 2014 Yeah am hoping by beta or whenever they are fixed we are not gona have zombies with eagle sharp eyesight which is complete bullshit .
Abram_ 40 Posted September 16, 2014 I actually like how they behave now. They follow Animals and players into the woods and fields, stay silent until they're right on top on you, can hear distant gunshots, and have pretty good vision. I like having a chance that you can be in the middle of nowhere and one pops up to take a swipe

R0B3RTF1SH3R 66 Posted September 17, 2014 it doesnt matter how far away they are. if you look at them and your crosshair goes near them they will throw their arms up in the air like they just don't care and come running. then stop after the code says they are too far away but will start up again instantly and keep doing this until they reach you. I don't know, I've watched Zeds forom a long way away just standing near a building or for hoppers squatting in a field and they do nothing but I have seen the situation you describe as well.
