Follow the power lines, they said...

Recommended Posts

They'll lead you to a town, they said... NO THE FUDGE THEY WON'T!

So today I discovered that if you keep following the power lines heading west from Novodmitrovsk eastern gas station, you'll eventually reach a patch of trees where the lines just suddenly stop. I should go back to using proper maps...

Most of them will take you to a big town... except the ones going North, because isn't anything there yet  ...Also, phone lines will take you to small towns.

Id say stay away from power lines as there are many areas in the north that just end and turn into debug zone ... Just direct yourself with the sun , it rises in the east travels over the southern part of the sky and sets in the west ... if the server time (only shown before you join) is 12:00 or later then the sun is already going to be past direct south towards west , if it's before 12:00 then the sun is more in the eastern sky and has not yet passed it's zenith (being at its highest point in the sky which should be direct south) .

So for instance if it's 12:00 on a server and you spawn in olsha (town right near the northeast airfield closer to the shore ) and you wanna go to the shore (east) you know the sun Is going to be very close to direct south (zenith , when it's highest in the sky and when this occurs it's almost dead south) so if you keep the sun behind you east should theoretically be to your right ;) .. It takes some practice as you can still get confused but it's much better than the alternative of trying to find the right roads or power lines for that matter ..

You can do both thought... use the sun to make sure that you heading west or east...AND use power lines and phone lines to move around more easily... that is what i do anyway....

I should go back to using proper maps...

Wise decision.

As the game progresses so will the maps, I hope they will show the power lines as they did in ArmA2/CO Chernarus.

When I first started playing I would always head inland and try to avoid being seen, following the power lines was a favorite tactic of mine. But after doing this for upwards of 40 hours and never seeing anyone and rarely ending up somewhere worth while I stopped and tried different tactics. The powerlines do take you places, but you need to know when/where to jump off and head N,S,E,W to head to a worthwhile location.

I did get amused by the few places where the power lines dip down too close to (or clip through) the ground and found it interesting that you couldn't clip through them, they're solid. That gave me an indication of their implementation for when/if helicopters and other flying things get introduced into the game.

Stay away from power lines. They carry high voltage which can kill you and also they emit beamz that shrink your nutz. :D
