Customizable faces like in skyrim, make your character, live the world.

I like your idea. I think later on they might or might not added it. But it would be nice to have even a simple set of tools to customize your player to make them unique. Like changing face features, height, body features, etc...

I doubt it. Another skeleton model - needed another set of animations, more customizations for models of items. Rocket talked about it.

A lot of kids would just make their characters as small as possible to shrink their hitbox to help them win firefights. Abuse like that in games gets on my nerves.

face and hair would be nice but like Zyryanoff stated the body sliders would mean changing the models of nearly everything in game to fit the body form you've set meaning multiple models in different sizes to prevent clipping (at least thats how I've been told)

Doubt they would bother with that amount of detail. From the looks of it, we are getting preset player faces like in ArmA unfortunately. Too much work for a 100 man development team it seems.

Could be dealt with by simply not showing the parts that are hidden anyways. For body types they said you would need to get animations for each one. I really would like to see more than two though but I highly doubt they will add a "get lose/weight" feature as this would require to animate all "in between" states.

 

I would like to have different (sorted by my personal opinion on how difficult they might be):

  • eye colors
  • skin tones (like using Jana's slightly olive skin tone on Dean)
  • hair colors
  • noses
  • ears
  • eyebrows
  • eye shapes
  • head shapes (skull, jaw, cheeks)
  • mouths (shape and color)
  • beards (for males only, sorry ladies but doing the same for typical female features would cause cries about "sexism"*, "horny teenagers"** etc.)
  • hairstyles
  • body shapes

Height and weight not included as people would choose the smallest silhouette in most cases. If anything this should either be random or aquired during gameplay. But as this might not happen I propose just adding a small number of differently built character models (like ~3 for each gender).

 

Having 5 choices for most other options (leaving out skin tones and beards) would result in over ten million possible survivors - try this with adding complete faces only.

 

*Actually very hypocritical...

**...though adding something like "bust shape" would probably really result in most female survivors featuring the biggest size. Or not - see "smallest silhoutte". Quite interesting and worth adding for science.

The way Bethesda does it in their games is your character is bald when weaing headgear that would clip, for some reason copying this technique has never entered the dayz dev team's minds.

Take things with a grain of salt. If rocket ever said that it is complete bullshit. Character model changes will at most comprise of only small polygons/texture colour on the face, have no bearing on character animation/jigglebones and as it is character face models already clip so badly through masks/headwear it couldnt get any worse.

If they are developing a big project like DayZ they should not be afraid of adding a few more animations and item variants.

 

For faces, and some minor body features etc. the "bald below your hat" method should work just fine and they might even be able to use the same animations for them - which might even be easier with a Skyrim-like character generator as you only need to animate the single features instead of every face separately.

 

For bodies it might be a lot more work - so it seems reasonable to only provide a small array for choices. But that doesn't mean there should only be two choices available. Even adding one or two additional choices per gender would greatly increase variety and I think thats worth the effort (though variety is not the focus right now so its okay to add these features later).

Yes, this is a must IMO.

 

Skyrim style customisation would be best, but even being able to select from a relatively large number of preset faces for each race would suffice.

I think size customization is a great idea! You don't need to remake the skeleton or the meshes, you just resize them, like how morrowind races worked. But here's the kicker: I'd like to see a strength based carrying limit and fatigue AND melee damage. The larger your character, the more you can carry, and the harder you hit. The smaller your character, the lower your carrying limit and melee damage, but also the smaller your hitbox. It would force players to make a choice. I feel items though should sort of automatically fit you regardless of size just to make the logistics easier.

If they can't do this, then they should at least get rid of the unintentionally racist "skin tone" slider and replace it with races, a few faces each and a separate skin tone slider.
