Does camo matter

Recommended Posts

Does camoflage actually make you any harder to see (while holding still)?...if so, what do you think is the best pattern?

I am looking for the most versatile camo...as if it is the only one I'll ever have. Also, I know there are opinions about how camo makes you more likely to be shot at - I do not consider this relevant to the question. Thank you!

In my opinion camo does not work.

It doesn't matter if you look like park ranger or have a yellow raincoat.

What matter is if enemy is looking at you or not.

only if the person  is within a 100m of you.  You are never as concealed as you think you are. specially if the person is playing on a potato.

It definitely matters. What do you think is harder to see, a yellow raincoat or a green shirt running through the forest.

In terms of "best camo"? I'm not sure, it's really up to preference. I usually just try to find a set of whatever piece I find first, whether it be gorka, ttkso or whatever. Gotta be matching because swag is the most important survival skill

is help bevause human eye is notice more the differents of color so yellow jacket on the green wall is easy for seeing but green and brown is same like the nature so if you having militery cloth you are not invisible but is more hard to see you but also wen you is move the human eye see you more easy so find place where is same color of the cloths and stay vary still and most player dont see you

Like shrub said, it won't make you invisible, but you can be much harder to notice

Mid to close range depending on your surroundings it does matter.

At long range the game makes everybody look like a black stick man so if ur in a field u stick out like a sore thumb

While it does matter camo suffers from grass disappearance at a certain distance. And it will probably stay this way unless they find some way to embed player models into the environment at greater distances.

Dull colors (greys, blues) and anything remotely cammo are what I usually gravitate to. I avoid anything bright, such as the yellow/red construction helmets, yellow rain coat, bright track suits, etc.

... on occasion I will intentionally dress ridiculously or as bright as possible just to see what people say, but that usually just ends up getting me shot before I can have too much fun with it.

They could check out Joint Operations for reference on this, JO did a pretty awesome job at it.

I think the choice of colors and shapes does matter.

I don't think a ttsko jacket is better a green hoodie for staying hidden though.

I do think that an improvised backpack is harder to spot than a red mountain backpack though.

Camo makes you harder to see. Much harder. Take a screeshot of yourself in camo and in regural clothes, in nature setting.

Thats why it is called camo

It does...but its a game and there's mechanics to consider. Black, Green and all out hunters or military camo does work well. Also your profile while laying prone is something to consider too, using an improvised back pack is the best for lowering your profile. Hunter pack is another good one.

From what I have seen with day Z mechanics play a big role on how visible you are to other players as well. 1st off if you are moving around or running, you are far more visible. If you completely still your much less visible, and if your hiding by a tree or behind something your profile you are much less visible. Your view distance is huge too. You can only see grass and small shrubs so far. You have to think about that, just because you see grass and think its safe to lay down in it. The guy aiming in on you from 700 meters away does not see it and sees you laying exposed. View distance has to always be considered.

In an urban setting, were much of the pvp takes place these days, camo plays less of a role but still does. I think wearing black or grey is best for an urban setting.

In DayZ there is real world judgement that helps, but I think you really really have to know the game the game mechanics as well. Its a realistic simulator, but it has its corks and bugs. OFP and ARMA were the exact same way.

Protip, the object quality setting affects your view distance. Players running low settings will see players start to ghost and that's when everything just blends in.

Chernarus is mostly made up of vast forest areas.

When a sniper is taking cover behind a tree wearing camo clothing finding him is like seatching a needle in the haystack.

It plays a big role in pvp and it's the number one reason players prefer the hunting backpack over the larger capacity mountain one.

Green/Brown check wool coat + green/brown cargo pants and a crafted backpack is gud

But I aways use the pink running shoes, idk if that jeopardises me but they are lovely anyways

I have seen that term a couple of times now. I guess that means a crappy computer? is it a reference to Portal 2? If so that is really funny

I have looked at myself with/without camo and it always seems like I stick out either way

This is very good, thank you. I have observed this effect but I didn't connect the dots on how it would work in reverse.

huh, ok thanks.

It seems like the general consensus is that camo does help but nobody has really specified their favorite pattern. Do you think there is an advantage to Ttsko/autumn/summer patterns?

My favorite camo pattern is 100% black. Otherwise, I roll with a minmaxed loadout which isn't camouflaged.

To zombies? No, and maybe it should.

To players? Meh, sometimes. It's more about masking the actual silhouette of your character than it is blending in with the background colors. So, just not silhouetting yourself against things goes much further than having all-green clothing.

That said, this is one of those things that I feel video games always get wrong one way or another.

Either the characters are too "shiny" (dunno how else to put it, the way they are rendered is different from that of the background, making for a harsh contrast).

Or...

The graphical settings of a game (i.e. AA, ATOC, etc.) can be tweaked as to make players all the more visible.

EDIT - I like the Green Gorka-E set, as well as the PautRev set.

I'm not sure about draw distances and whatnot, but at some point the foliage around you doesn't render on the other players screen.  So you'll blend in more than if you were wearing a yellow raincoat, but I honestly don't think it makes much of a difference right now.  Only when you're reasonably close to them and foliage is rendering do I think it gives an advantage.

People have pretty much covered it all but it doesn't matter a whole lot, especially with people turning their settings really low for maximum advantage.

If you're playing on high settings with shadows and all the foliage etc, yeah some camo will be helpful, but as in the mod, I believe most people who are into pvp turn their settings very low and then it becomes much less of a factor.  I wish they'd find a compromise for that, but oh well.

At a distance colors become a bit muddied in terms of clothing, even with object detail set to highest, and the colors you wear don't matter much, you'll look like a bit of a dark blob regardless especially when moving.

So basically, camo doesn't hurt but it doesn't really help as much as you might expect.  I think it's good though, I don't want to see the game become something like battlefield 3 where there's so much shit going on with lighting/shadows and camo that it's hard to even see people half the time.  Players should stick out to an extent, and I think it's pretty close to how it should be.  If you're stationary and in a good spot you'll be hard to spot, if you're moving and the person is attentive you stick out.

Ghillie suits in the mod worked really well though, so if those ever get implemented I'll be curious to see how effective they are.  That's probably again more to do with your silhouette than your actual colors though.  In the mod you didn't have a pack and your silhouette became "jagged" with a ghillie.

Oh and the majority of people wearing camoed out military gear just seem like douche bags to me =P

So there's the added disadvantage of looking like a generic butthole vs wearing something with style and being different than 99% of the people playing.

Yesterday, me and my squad got fired at by a sniper at the NWAF. We were around the firestation, the sniper was on the other side of the airfield. I took my binoculars out and started to peek around a corner while searching for the sniper in the treeline across the airfield. Couldn't find anything that somehow looks like a player at all, 2 seconds later I was dead. I don't think that guy was wearing a yellow raincoat.

Camo patterns are, at large to mid distances, pretty much all the same. At close distances, when the grass is displayed, you can lay around in the grass and four enemy players run past you without noticing anything. But, as the grass in Chernarus is pretty light-coloured, the Summer Camo Gorka set seems one of the best clothes to wear for camo matter, because it is pretty light-coloured, too, and it has a bit of green in it. TTSKo is too dark, I think.

I agree, since GORKA came out, TTSKO is numero duo of camo clothing.

Different environments warrant different camo

Trees during the day hands down TTSKO

Fields during the day u want beige colors like tan tactical shirt or gorka crap

Trees at night jet black

Fields at night grey

As far as im concerned camo does not really matter.

Your biggest hope of not being seen is to remain still. You will be surprised how many people will walk right past you if you are standing still, especially in DayZ, peoples minds are trained to see objects moving against a still back ground, stand still and you will rarely get seen.

Remember, people are only looking for you if they know you are there. Next time your in a busy town, find a bush or scrap pile and just sit there for a while and watch how many oblivious people stroll by .Being stealthy helps alot.
