SMERSH. this is how it works

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. In this post I'm gonna try to represent my point of view regarding SMERSH, and how it may work and add something to our beloved DayZ.
As I know from my personal experience, SMERSH consists of three pieces: straps, belt and waist.

These are the basics. Waist has MOLLE and it allows to add different pouches regarding your operation and your role: for example u can add  machine gun pouches if u carrying such a weapon, or you can add sniper rifle pouches, if u are using SVD or such a weapon, etc.
So we all know how Fireplace works in DayZ right now.
And what is a suggestion: may be it can be possible to spawn SMERSH with 5 slots (like fireplace), and these slots (attention!) could NOT be used to carry food, ammo or so, these slots could be filled with pouches, and they shall provide the slots for equipment, food, ammo, etc. And these pouches could be found over the map in military bases.
here are some examples

It may be interesting, wouldn't u agree?

while practical, i'd rather see more civilian and makeshift solutions.

i'd rather like to see the game go this way:

and NOT this way:

Everything you agreed with I agree with, finally someone who speaks some sense.

Honestly I'd like to see both.  My sense of uniqueness wants the crafted stuff, but my love for tacticool wants to see the military gear.

Because in the apocalypse military equipement will be become really really rare,

because it can not be re-produced as easily as survival-items such as leather-coats, -puches, -coats, -backpacks, -armor, etc.

However, I could accept having mil. and civilain/survivalist-gear, if the ratio is like 1:5 or even less ;)

thanks for the MadMax-pic, e47!

It won't be really really rare, DayZ is set in a perpetual state of a few days to weeks after the major outbreak [evidenced by the fact zombies are still dressed in civilian clothing, fresh fruit is still good and petrol hasn't gone past its yearly expiry and still apparently works].

Military influx of soldiers to contain the zombies is evident everywhere, so military equipment at a 1 to 5 ratio makes sense.

Too fiddly, too tacticool, yet another suggestion that add unneeded complexity to the inventory system just because we somehow HAVE to have a granular molle system instead of a handful of stock pack setups.

the game needs a main theme. jack-of-all-trades approaches usually emerge being mediocre on all ends.

im not opposed to military gear being included, but imho it should be balanced in availability and usefulness against crafted and civilian items. smersh/molle vests are versatile and useful in combat operations, but you can obviously carry more with civilian hiking equipment. and an average household usually has neither mountain backpacks nor military vests, so we should see makeshift constructions made of rope and sacks much more. thats my 2ct.

Not that stuff like this hasn't been suggested a million times before (I guess it's popular, so eh). Seems fine by me, provided that weight becomes an issue.

That is extremely wrong expectation, I suggest you to find some sources about amount of military equipment existing in present days, than do some calculation on how much populations needs to die to enter "post apocalyptic density of population" and than think for a bit how rare would be military loot if it would be target of operation. I am absolutely sick of ppl presuming how rare military loot will be. Honestly, if there ever will be post apo, I hope you will ignore military zones to get later shot with military grade ammo while cutting your pouch with your grandma knife, just coz you didnt realize possibilities.

smersh vest has been confirmed being worked on anyway.

after rereading, i also think we have missed the core point of OP - the modularity. so whether it is a military product like the smersh vest or a makeshift construction, extending the attachment system to invontery items is generally a good idea and yes, i would like to see it.

BUT: just because i would like to see it, doesnt mean its a good idea gameplay-wise. as Lady Kyrah stated:

yet another suggestion that add unneeded complexity to the inventory system just because we somehow HAVE to have a granular molle system instead of a handful of stock pack setups.

i think thats a valid objection that needs to be well regarded

While I'd love SMERSH vests, I honestly doubt the modularity is something that's too important.

It would definitely be cool, especially because the devs have said its planned, but it's not really necessary.

I already don't like the fact that you can ONLY store ammo in the ammo containers and ONLY store medical supplies in the med boxes, even though they're clearly large enough to hold other stuff. For the same reasoning any dedicated pouches are only going to allow you to store what they're made for, even if the SVD-Mag pouch can clearly hold STANAG or Steel AK mags.

From a gameplay standpoint it is necessary, but it's still pretty annoying. I would've liked modular vests as a feature for ArmA 3, but they decided not to include it, so...

Who knows? If they want to make them modular, I'd be down with it.

Concur. My very favorite thing is when the two are combined. One part scavenged high-end shit, and two parts improvised junk. I love the contrast that occurs when things like that are done.

I would enjoy something like having a really nice military vest, but the clothing being home-sewn from animal pelts.
