How to avoid confusion when adding more ammo types

Recommended Posts

You just put what gun the ammo goes in in the ammo's item description, and what ammo the gun takes in the gun's description.

I agree with the gun description version, but putting in the ammo description makes it too easy :|

Naw, neither guns nor ammo should tell you what they fit in. If I find a gun or ammo in real life it does not come with a tag on it telling me what to load.

A true survival game would have all ammo and clips be nameless in your ammo until the first time you successfully load them into a weapon and learn what they are.

That's half the fun isn't it?  Trying to work out what ammo fits into what gun.  IRL i wouldn't have a clue.

And after a while you pretty much remember what goes where anyway.

Actually.... They do. Well guns that is.

This is a close up of a .40s&W 1911

This is a picture of a colt python. You can see ".357 Magnum" written below "Python .357"

And this is a picture of my Norinco JW15A taken just a few minutes ago. (i'm not very good with photos)

Also, 90% of the time (unless we are talking milsurp, but then it's iffy) the base of the casing will have the calibre written on it in one form or another.

That, and renaming them in the inventory screen would work wonders.

7.62 NATO

In-game description upon inspection...

"The 7.62x51 NATO round is a high-powered cartridge used primarily in weapons of Western origin"

7.62 Rimmed

In-game description upon inspection...

"7.62x54R, an older high-powered rifle cartridge commonly used in weapons of Soviet origin"

7.62 AK

In-game description upon inspection...

"7.62x39, an intermediate rifle cartridge, most commonly used in AK-derivative weapons"

Either way, the planned divide between .308/7.62x54R seems to be a good solution at the moment.

I still like the idea of the ammo and clips being unknown until you successfully load them. It helps to simulate you being an average Joe schmuck trying to survive.

Yeah, no. They should be unknown until you Hit "Inspect". As stated before, it is very common for the calibre to be written on both the round and the firearm. But the photo should show the right round so gun nuts and people who remember have it rather than having to sit around and hit inspect. Successfully loading them would mean alot of trial and error for nothing. A .308 is not going to fit in a .44 magnum, so why should i have to go through all the ammo until i find out I have tons of .357, .45acp, .308 and no .44? Especially if i can recognize them for real.

I think boxes of ammo should be more rare than just finding bullets around. That way they can remove the calibre from the name and just call them "Bullets". Then it would be way better and you'd either have to find a box of them that tells you the calibre, look on the bottom of the casing, or just wing it

As long as you can still see the correct ingame model and boxes keep their labels as well.

Another idea is to keep both names but don't reference the connection (so you have to know or check if a certain ammo type fits a gun).

I just want to say this one thing.

Fuck people who are getting confused over this.

Currently this game is quite realistic (not getting into the .308/7.2x54R debate) but it works. Unlike a real zombie apocalypse, you have the ability to use the internet and gather information in seconds. IRL if this happened most of you would have died already and about half that survived would be trying to do stuff like shoving .380 into a original Colt SAA or .44 magnum into a Mosin not knowing what is wrong with doing that. The rest will have an Idea but will have a good chance of putting 20 Gauge into a 12 gauge or 8MM mauser into a 30/06 and there will be a small percentage that knows what they are doing or has their own shit sorted.

Either get your shit tucked in the firearms department or learn to run away when you can't load that SKS with the 7.62 ammo you found while leaving behind all that 7.62x39.

That is all.

I only request this because of a post a dev made saying they dont want to add more calibers because it would confuse casuals. I LIKE the more survivaly ideas you guys have, but the devs are too dang worried about 'casual' players who cant google what caliber a gun is...
