Painkillers don't have a function right now, but when I spawn the first thing I do is take off my t-shirt and tear it to make rags...........

Pro-Tip... not having anything on your upper body makes you more likely to end up bleeding and needing to use the bandages you tore it into. ;)

For me it doesn't happen as often as getting the t-shirt ruined when getting shot as a fresh spawn. Having it already ripped makes it faster to bandage, and saved my life more times than I can think of... (Getting shot as a fresh spawn.)

 

I don't bleed from zombie hits, as I don't let them hit me. ;)  (Dunno why many players "hate" the zombies, apart from the glitches, because I never felt threaten by them even when they were 1 hit killing players. You just gotta know how to deal with them.)

 

9 out of 10 occasions, I store all my valuables in my backpack, and keep jacket and pants empty, as the more items you have in them, the more damage you take.

I vividly remember the first time I played this game. I spawned just outside Solnichniy and didn't know my ass from a hole in the wall. I found a compass but that didn't really mean much of shit to me. I then found out about daydb and saw the interactive map. I used it a few times but then felt like it was robbing the game of true exploration so i decided to hell with this I'm going to learn this map. So after a few weeks I traveled all around the map to all the cities trying to learn some of their names and landmarks. During this time I had found a pristine compass in a barn (I think they used to spawn there?) so I used that to help me navigate for times that I would get lost deep in the woods. Fast forward to today and I don't even use the compass. I can traverse the entire map without ever feeling lost and I stick to the woods exclusively. Moral of the story is you will be better off learning the map but its not a bad idea to use the compass when you first start in this game. However the last thing you want to do is not learn the map and have t rely solely on a compass, teammate or random stranger in the game to get you headed in the right direction. As you explore learn the cities, towns and what the surrounding landscape looks like.

 

As for night time, the flash light is useless because it has to be in your hand which means no melee. Get a headlamp instead or hell just a white chem light :D! Thankfully more people play on night now since they tweaked night time and i'm hoping less people use the gamma exploit as there is no need for it (never really was IMHO if you have a decent graphics card).

Why can't we spawn with something useful like a compass instead of the flashlight? I have never used the flashlight, and I am still wandering the map looking for a god damn compass. Questions: Do servers sometimes misrepresent the time? Twice now morning servers have turned out to be evening servers. Does campfire smoke and our characters breath follow wind patterns (blowing from west to east)? Finally found my way back to Electro and then spent hours server hopping outside the fire station, found all sorts of loot but still no compass. Is there a way to tell which NON hardcore servers are going to spawn you as a bambie ignoring your saved character? Is it the fragnet servers I should avoid?

I agree completely, I also have never used the flashlight and always am looking for a compass from the beginning. Also, if you were wandering around in the woods in real life you would be way more likely to have a compass on you then a flashlight. I support this idea.

Finally found a compass, in pristine condition. And it's wonderful... everything I imagined it would be. So frikkin nice to take a bearing, travel, then end up exactly where I wanted to go. It's so nice to use the compass and the ingame map to triangulate my position, know exactly where I am, and how many meters to target I am. I just wish the compass was easier to read... I know... bitch bitch bitch... some people are never happy.

The flashlight is pretty useful if you play on night servers, which many people don't do, but I still think spawning in with just the flashlight is just perfect.  character saving in this build and I've been playing on fragnet servers.

 

Yeah, it was pretty useful up until this latest EXP patch, now it's so bright at night that you might aswell throw away the flashlight and all other light sources. I loved playing at night until this EXP patch, now the night is just lame...

 

If they make nights darker again, I would like to spawn with flashlight, because sometimes I start as bambi in the night. If they keep it as bright as this they might aswell just remove all sources of light in this game because now they are pretty useless, only nice too look at...

Haven't played the exp so I was not aware of this, but I can see the problem with this.

Anyway, this is actually pretty funny because people used to whine about the nights being too dark and now that they have made them brighter people are complaining that now they are too bright. This makes me think that there is actually no problem with the game but the users instead since no matter what the devs will do/fix/add they'll always get s**t from the users. I can't wait to see what kind of c**p people will give them when the vehicles will finally get implemented. Ofcourse this sort of behaviour is to be expected with anything that has large number of people involved in it. No matter what you do, you can never please everybody.

And just to make sure, I am not a brown noser. Personally I think there are more than few things that should have been fixed/added already, but I am just pointing out the irony of this community.

I think the flashlight is really useful. The game might even have gone a little soft on the players by giving them one at start, but the reason for that is that looting without one at night is close to impossible.

 

Night time is a valid part of the game, even if lots of servers are running daylight 24/7. Very paranoia-inducing, giving away your position like that but I find it very fun.

 

Anyhow, I wouldn't worry too much - I usually run into more compasses than I can use. They can be hard to spot though - small brownish item, often on a table or bookshelf. Easy to miss.

I think you should spawn with nothing. Build up from the ground to the top. No flashlight no nothing. Just barebones.
