Player name structure restrictions

Recommended Posts

Because there is nothing worse than meeting a Leg0las08 and XxxKILLERxxX in any game that is all about immersion, here are a few suggestions to restrict name structures.

  1. First letter is capitalized and the rest is lowercase
  2. No symbols or numbers
  3. At least a single vowel and a single consonant per word.
  4. No less than 4 letters, no longer than 20.
  5. One to 3 words

Example: Jeffrey, Lewis Baxter, Long John Silver

Examples that would not work: Unr3@D4Bl3, KosLOL-AK47

This should have been in from the start. Everywhere, not just Dayz.

No.

Well you should (normally) be capitalized, you have a proper name, you're not a chair or a fridge :)

We are trying to enforce this policy on our server, it just makes it a lot easier to track players and communicate with people when you know what there names are.

So no, because your arrow points to Hamburg?

@OP

Yeh that would be the ideal "online dream", but tbh does it really matter?

9/10 times you wont see a players name ingame, unless he wants you to, and if its "pussyDestroyer#314" or "l33t_N00B_Sn1p3r", chances are you are better off leaving him alone anyway :)

Its hard to start restricting things like this, if it wasnt done from the beginning, because now they need a really good reason to change it.

kichilron with a lowercase k

Why would I not be able to chose that?

I mean - I think certain names should be restricted and that numbers have no place in any name.

It seems that your rules are silly and arbitrary... let people go by whatever they want. If someone wants to be known as Sku1lFuXor001 then so be it.

No symbols or numbers

So no hyphenated names like 'Laura-anne' or 'Velasquez-Wallowitz'?

At least a single vowel and a single consonant per word.

So the name 'Helxsklnxpzly' is ok?

No less than 4 letters, no longer than 20.

What about Tim? Ned? Vi? Some people even go by a single letter... I know a chick that her name legally changed to 'T' b/c she hated her given name.

One to 3 words

Only 3 words? There are plenty of cultures that keep more than first/middle/last... and what if you want a title like Sr. Jr. Dr. Mrs. etc....

Really? What about zombies glitching through walls and attacking thin air when you step aside? What about not knowing which direction you were shot at from b/c you don't have 7.1 surround and perfect silence in your gaming room? Third person view?  I can think of a dozen more reasons my 'immersion' gets all messed up :(

Was trying to make a joke, but it completely collapsed around me lol :D

I agree somewhat, it would not be ideal to allow people to call them what ever they want, but on the other hand i just dont care about people's usernames in an online video game.

They can call themselves what ever they want, it doesnt really matter to me.

Well, apart from the usual stuff, which really have a built-in filter. Why give the Admins the ability to kick people for inappropriate names if you could just filter them out?

True, if its gonna go down that road, the best solution would be a build in feature, auto-kicking people and telling them to change name.

Admins should not be bothered with player names imho.

What happens when there is a reset and someone takes the name Lady Kyrah.

Would you rather A: Move on and find a new name (even if its your handle everywhere)

Or B: Live with the name L@dy Kyrah?

And yes, there is going to be the classic xbox and Ps3 morons that do 420BLAZEITPOTISGOODPOOPYOLO, but unless you have a gun and a ton of ammo, i dont see that going away anytime soon.

Laura Anne is not okay? or do you absolutely need the hyphenation?

Well this is a basic idea, it's not perfect by any means and you can punch holes into it all the way you want unless we get our name chosen for us :D, write a better ruleset?

3 words is pently, i don't mind cultures that wish to be more verbose, but these are names we should be able to remember...

If i can't be Kyrah This, i'll be Kyrah That. That's the entire point of first/middle/last name IRL

I guess I just don't see a point in making people use 'normal' names -- after all, when you meet someone in game does their name pop up over their head or do they introduce themselves?  When I talk to people in-game I don't ever mention my name.

I mean, if you want realism, you're going to need to ask people for their names anyways.

I actually got banned from a CSS server once for using the name "Rigor Mortis" and the admin gave the reason of 'sexually explicit name' ....

So first letter capitalized and the rest lowercase? Then your examples are wrong, it should be Jeffrey, Lewis baxter, Long john silver. THAT is the "First letter capitalized the rest lower case" that you want. No symbols? So no more Rose-Mary, Leah-Anne, or my IGN, Owen 'Kilroy' Bacon? Applying the first 2 (oh, not allowed sorry, its two now) rules alone, and the names are Rosemary, Leahanne, and Owenkilroybacon. Because dont forger, a space isnt a letter, its a symbol for seperation.

At least 1 (oops did it again) vowel and consonant per word? Well I guess my friend Aeyi (Pronounced Ally) isnt allowed to play using her name anymore, so I guess HER immersion is ruined.

Character requirements? Now your becoming a dictator. Bye bye Aj, Dan, Jose Ectario Bautista, and all you 2 (I just keep at the numbers, dont I?) letter, and 21 letter named guys, sorry about YOUR immersion.

1-3 words? Okay, bye bye prefixes, like guys who play as a doctor using Dr. or soldiers using SGT. or Lt. Bye bye all you Juniors, Seniors and the III's I guess we dont welcome soldiers, doctors or those with an inherited/ passed on name.

Your becoming too picky, and want to break EVERYONES immersion by not letting them use their 2 letter names like Aj, evicting people with only vowels in their name, not allowing people with long names use them ( R.I.P Jose Ectario Bautista) keeping me from using my nickname, Owen 'Kilroy' Bacon, and keeping Dr.s , SGTand Lt and other soldier abbreviations out, as well as Senior Junior and the III.

This breaks your immersion? STOP PUSHING P TO SEE WHOS ON, AND IT WONT BE BROKE! Oh my, wow its THAT simple! You know, while were at it, sexism ruins my immersion, I dont want you to be named Lady Kyrah, as that makes me feel as if your forcing a feminist belief upon me.

You want serious names, go to DayZRP. Actually, I dont think youd like that. They have names like Owen 'Kilroy' Bacon, Dr. Josef Ivanovitch Grue, SGT. James Brown, Rose-Mary Davis, and Abdull M'yiachmouleed Acherohayut. Theres always gonna be little kids, but H1Z1 will draw them away in a while (It was supposed to be out 2 weeks ago, why didnt anyone bitch like they did with DayZ lol) BUT there will also always be doctors, soldiers, Juniors and Seniors, nicknames and freakishly long African names.

I really don't care more or less, but it seems like way too small of a problem to warrant trying to limit what people call themselves. I mean, the only times you'll see someone else' name is in the player list, which is honestly more immersion breaking since you would never really know everyone in an area, or if they talk to you through text chat, which is necessary for people who don't have a microphone being identified.

And then again, post-apocalypse, what's stopping someone from calling themselves something ridiculous? I mean, the risk factor isn't there, but a post-apocalyptic setting is one of the best fits for people with unusual names, as there's nothing stopping them from identifying as whoever they want to be.

Why must DayZ be restrictive?

I'm not going to nitpick at your individual rule systems, because they're clearly able to be changed, but in the end it's going to create tons of work to solve something that's not necessarily even a problem to begin with.
