First, thanks for the response accolyte, devs do rarely post here and I'm sure everyone appreciates someone breaking the norm. Now I understand that you can't just change the sound as the game will still behave the same mechanically if you left it at that.

However, I did notice that they've (you've?) changed the M4 sounds this patch even though it's certainly not a priority compared to some other things like you said. Can you confirm anything regarding that, or maybe, if more suppressors are to be added? I remember seeing a one for the AKM in the model files a couple of months ago.

I can't take credit for it. I believe it was given to me by Matt

It was but he changed it once in latest (not telling), I'm still humming & haring about the color/colour though.

Getting the sound right for other players + Z reaction to + or- distance is the hard part I suspect.

Seems you've still missed the point. The sound itself is but an effect for players.

The code that controls who hears it and how it affects zombies, animals etc and all it affects is the complex bit.

Sure, in terms of playing sounds, that could be easy enough. One sound effect for regular, one for silenced.

The issue being a player that would have heard your regular shot will be able to hear your silenced shot all the same, since the code controlling who can hear it is the same.

Same goes for zombies. In effect, you could achieve the same gameplay outcome just turning down your volume when you shoot, as everyone will still hear it and come looking for a kill or snack.

Just because the result from a player effect seems simple, doesn't mean it is from a big picture perspective.

The only silencer that is currently effective is the fire axe. That or avoiding combat and being stealthy.

Heres a fix. Hint: its the one i already said. I was not just refering to the physical noise it makes in game, i was also talking about the code. If people are saying it might be difficult to change the code to make it less loud, it would be crazy easy to make it just non existant. Just delete the lines of sound code when the silencer is attached.

And if people dont like the gun with the silencer, they can just take it off.

Win Win my friend.

Harsh..

True. This is probably the first thread I've seen you developer actually reply to a human on the official forum. Usually, its twitter, reddit, or some other form of social media that half the people here don't visit. Yes this is official DayZ forum- Please use it. thanks

For a singleplayer game it would be easy to "fix" it one way or the other, for multiplayer game it´s not that easy.

The whole sound thing is pretty complex in dayz SA and pretty bugged at the moment. So I guess they will work on that once they have added all "sound sources".

Going with the fact that the tests in the video were clearly done in a cavernous living room with little/no furniture, with insanely reverberative surfaces (just his voice is echoing massively), gonna' go ahead and say that the test is inconclusive.

The issue for me, is how they'll end up honoring supersonic/subsonic ammunition.

In other words, a subsonic pistol round fired through a suppressor should be quieter than a supersonic rifle round through a suppressor.

They've said they're not interested in adding subsonic variants of normally supersonic ammunition (i.e. 5.56x45).

So, they're left with two options... one with far more involvement than the other...

1. Actually have suppressors lower the sound level very slightly, (but it should still be dern loud as the round is still breaking the sound barrier), have a lessened muzzle flash, and have it modulate the sound somehow as to make discerning the origin of the shot a bit more difficult for players downrange.

2. Just use the "Hollywood" approach and allow suppressors to make all rounds (subsonic or supersonic) quiet.

I don't care either way.

Sir,

I appreciate your reply to my post, but the video was to show that suppressors are not the "pew pew" type that are protrayed in movies, not to start a round table about acoustics.

I have shot suppressors of various types at indoor and outdoor ranges. They have been wet and dry and nothing was movie quiet (even with sub-sonic ammo) unless it was a .22.

Realism > Movies.

There's no need to be harsh about it. You can't tell anyone where they're supposed to post and where they aren't allowed to.

Accolyte's here and has been for a while, it's not really his fault if you don't see him about. He's also actively taking care of the Feedback-Tracker, so that the issues get elevated as well as the suggestions on the Forum. As long as everything's being passed on I don't see where the problem is, as it has become much better than it felt before.

Said like someone who has no idea about programming.

Just because you keep saying it, doesn't mean it becomes right.

The most likely outcome of your 'easy fix' would be the game failing to work as there is code missing.

I mean, I guess that's sort of silencing the gun...

the Sound engine Needs a rework.

the eating Sound f i Sound like its recorded with a 90ies mobile phone!

I'm sure the devs will gladly accept a donation of a better eating sound, provided it's an original sound effect and royalties free.

Trust me, compared to some of the other folks on this forum (i.e. Gews) that was a layman's explanation of suppressor acoustics.

Realism may trump movies for you, but realism doesn't trump practicality for me in terms of DayZ. Which is why I don't mind a simpler solution of rendering suppressors as ubiquitous attachments which quiet all rounds, on all weapons, across the board.

Thats why i said please use it, it was a plea not an order . most of the time I have to go to dev tracker and then over to Reddit because people simply won't answer here, if they do its once in a blue moon, i was shocked to even see a reply for once. Im sorry you think Im  a bit harsh but most people I know have simply given up playing at this point because things are taking their time and its hard to decipher from all the various social media sites when exactly any updates will be released to make the alpha playable.

So, at this point, from a gameplay issue (not a what comes out of my speakers issue) are silencers working at all or should I just toss mine till they start working?
