easy fix for server hopping: non-persistent character locations.

Recommended Posts

when you switch servers your character should "respawn" on the new server instead of being at the same location, simple.

you can take all your loot between servers, so you wouldn't lose anything, but you cant just sit in a high value loot location and continually switch servers.

no way, server hopping is part of the game....nothing wrong with it. if you don't like it, camp high loot areas and wait for server hoppers to show up and kill em to make yourself feel better.

This is not a good idea, if the spawn will reset, you will lose your group, the coast will be loaded with high geared players hunting bambi's and it takes away all the effort of traveling a far distance on the map.

The majority does not server hop and should not be punished by a few lazy players.

how about just limiting people to 3 server changes per day? I would never use more than that

server hopping is part of the game

True. And thats one of the major gameplay issues right now. Possible solutions are limiting server changing or making loot persistent across servers and both concepts are somewhat flawed. Private hives would work but they would limit your character to a single server meaning you can't do much if its full/empty/offline/etc.

Spawning at the coast (or somewhere else) comes with its own set of issues, exploits etc. I would rather like the "safe zone" concept that moves you out of certain areas. Those areas could include high value loot spawns or even small areas around other players but you would stay in the region (e.g. logging out in the Berezono police station makes you respawn inside an empty house or just outside Berezino).

How is exploiting a gamemechanic "a part of" it?

Server hopping is currently part of the game.  That doesn't mean it SHOULD be part of the game.  That's why there's a suggestion page on the forums.

Server hopping is an effective way of building ones inventory with low risk.  Players cannot be blamed for exploiting this.  That said, server hopping is bad for the game.
In my opinion, DayZ’s fun is found in surviving by your wits and skill.  Much of the joy comes from stumbling upon a valuable item, or narrowly surviving a lucrative supply run in a city or town.  Server hopping is an exploit that allows players to circumvent this.

The answer is to allow each player to choose three servers to inhabit at the beginning of the game.  The player may then exchange any one of those three for any other once per week/month/whatever works.  The average daily uptime (based on the last month maybe?), average number of players online, and age of the server would be listed beside the server in the server list, allowing players to make educated choices.  This would ensure that at least one of the servers chosen is likely to be online at any given time.  The ability to switch out a server once per week would limit server hopping while still allowing players to pick the same servers as their friends, even if their friends get the game later.

A popup that appears before viewing the server list could explain all of this.

Another option is to go the Minecraft route.  One character per server.  Changes in one server do not carry over to others.  I'm sure this has already been suggested and shot down.  There's probably a technical reason why this can't be done, or a practical one that I haven't thought of.

LOL so want to get all big brother about it and limit server changes to prevent this? if they join one server, loot it for 5-10 mins, leave and join a second server do the same thing, then do it a third or fourth time within a certain time period - it would detect you're "hopping" and give you a 5 or 10 min timer when joining the next server just to discourage/slow you or as the OP suggested - even reset your character? i personally dont care if players want to spend all that time looting/hopping and im sure there are many who do it that's why i said it was part of the game and you can find plenty of players to kill doing this, but personally im too lazy to keep switching servers trying to find holy grail loot -i just work with what i have on that particular server. if something was implemented to prevent this it may really annoy those who are not actually hopping but just switching servers for other reasons, like looking for other players. i know servers restart quite often so that would need to be recongized so they're not punished etc

why does it even matter if players who are willing to spend that time, hop from server to server, really a problem for you? I'm not seeing it. you set too many limitations and you will get backlash.... some players are all about their loot and joys of just finding particular loot. if i have to switch servers now for any reason, first have to crash to desktop and re-open the game.....lovely feature and makes me not even want to switch servers, ever.

You know what is one of the reasons for hopping ? Let me tell you

Ridiculously long travel distances.

It takes so long to travel between bases that people can't be bothered to do it because it changes the game form survival simulator into hold W for two hours simulator.

I see your point but you don't to just hang out in the same area all the time anyway right? And hopping a server still puts you in the same spot and in the same predicament you are no closer to a new area then you were when you left the previous one. I have never wanted to stay in a area that long so I will travel but your right we need an auto run button 8). You can only search empty houses so long before you get bored with the game...I have never camped a high loot area and hopped since I still have not really found such an area yet. I think with loot respawn there will less reason to do any of that. Sometimes I find the server I have picked is laggy and I would like to find a smoother server and has nothing to do with loot so some of these ideas of only 3 servers kind sucks for me. My internet connection where I live isn't the greatest so finding a good one is sometimes not easy. Like many folks I have only one option for internet so I have to live with it. I personally would find server hopping to an area with lots of good loot would just make the game boring for me...too much loot is a lot like no loot at all...I would rather find stuff and make due with what I come across and hope for something better through searching besides I tend to die soooo no real point in gathering a bunch of good crap only to die and start hopping all over again. The real beauty of this game is people can do what they want...if someone finds that fun then w/e just like people who roleplay or kos or like to be a hero since there really is no character progression other than loot I look at these people who do it same as the people who buy already maxed out toons for other mmos because they just want to be bad azzes and not really play the game. It's their loss. I'm just as likely to be killed by a noob with a pistol as I am a hopper with some crazy loot. Maybe I have yet to run into people abusing this although I can see how it can be done. I don't server hop myself. Not so long ago I even killed 4 fully geared server hoppers that left their characters in a military building.

One character per server sounds good but can become annoying if your server becomes over-crowded or is offline..but i think we should have both...a number of official hive servers, which I think shouldn't be able to be fiddled with by the admin, and then a number of private servers where admins could do what they want like password, kick people, clan only or whattever. Currently we have a grey area with many admins badly managing and kicking people from public hive

Solution: one character per server.

Nope, characters will lose whatever little value they have now. Died ? No biggie, not even need to gear up again, swap server and it's all good, rinse and repeat as much as you want.

You do realize that you'd still need to gear up a character on that other server?

When we get tents people will have an easy way to stash extra gear so dying won't be such a problem anyway.

My god people voice your opinions don't harsh on the man for coming up with an idea that he believes would work, its a suggestion forum for a reason. Anyways before I write a paragraph on how people suck I would like to voice my opinion. Spawning on the coast when you log into a server is not going to happen it would cause too many more issues then it would fix, if anything switching to another server for the first time is one thing as long as the server has on memory where you last played that way the whole group thing is solved as long as you have played the server before, kinda like the mod in how you jump between servers but each saved a different spot depending on where you left your character only now you'd start the server with all gear you had unless of course you died then switching to another server would just spawn as a fresh spawn. Now the issue with that is if in server 1 you did die and tried to log into server 2 how would it act, would you still be in the same spot with no gear? or would server 2 act as if you died as well. Programming this could be an issue so i doubt even my idea would work. Other option i saw was all servers having separate memory's exactly like the mod but this is kinda irritating to me in the fact that I hunt my loot for a reason, if my server is full i'd hate to have to start over as a fresh spawn in a new server, I'd much rather be spawned again with my gear but in a random zone like i stated before unless i played the server before then I'd just take over where i left off in that server.

Now my Idea to this suggestion is to move the character a small distance away from where they last logged, nothing too far just maybe a few feet or maybe just a few yards away. This will solve the issue that when boarding houses are a thing you cant just log off outside a "base", go to a different server and walk in the house that the base is on the other server only to log back in to the original smack dab in the middle. This granted is not an issue right now since we have no claim to houses but soon it will be when people "Ghost" through someones base. Honestly an answer needs to be found before this so we can just aviod the conflict before it even happens and I hope the DEV's will read through this to help decide what to do but i will say this now my idea isn't perfect and i can see here that no ones is because either way someone will disagree with what we say but hopefully these help a bit.

Exactly, which means once you put in the little effort to gear up you will be able to have 10 + geared characters on different servers. Unless you are going for full pristine military gear or some rare items you can gear up really fast.
