How easy would it be to make a Street View map of Chernarus?

Recommended Posts

Pretty much as the topic asks.

This is a bit of a long post, and perhaps General Discussion is the wrong forum, but I'm sure I'm not the only person to have thought about this and as there wasn't any thread (that I could find at least) I thought I'd start one.

Ok, so Street View. If you are unsure what it is (and I doubt there are any people who do, but there might be) it's where you have an eye level view in 360 degree as opposed to the classic top down map view.

For DayZ a Street View map would be an interesting project and while my technical skills extend to being able to create a custom 2D map I have no experience creating photospheres (more about them later) or scripting within the engine to allow them to be created at set points within the DayZ world.

The way the current 2D maps work is to "hijack" the mapping system by overlaying a normal Google map with your own tiles. This works well when you are overlaying an older map on top of a new one (a Victorian London street map over a modern London street map, for instance) but then that is a real world location. It gets a little more awkward when you are overlaying a virtual location but as you can see from those available it can be done to great effect.

Street Views, though, are a little more awkward as not only do you need to make the 2D maps (which we have already) but create things called photospheres. Essentially these are just static pictures taken at intervals over 360 degrees which are "knitted" together to produce the familiar Street View visual. Here is an example of someone creating a custom Street View using photoshperes: http://google-latlong.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/create-your-own-street-view.html

So in summary, we know how to do 2D maps (and have several ones in general use), we know that custom Street View maps are possible leaving the photospheres for the virtual DayZ environment to be created and linked together. As the world is computer generated I feel the logic behind creating a script that would generate the relevant images from the separate points in Chernarus would be fairly "straight forward". Clearly doing the actual programming would be a fairly detailed task and without any experience of scripting the DayZ engine I am perhaps guilty of assuming it's easier than at first though. Time would be a factor, after all you are talking about quite a lot of images to be taken and then joined together (think of going from Elektro to Cherno and stopping every 3 meters and taking a selection of screenshots), however there doesn't seem to be technical reasons why it's not possible (not in my mind anyway). The only thing that would need an investment of human time (opposed to computer) would be to highlight the roads that the "camera" would follow. From there on it could be generated programmatically.

So, thoughts anyone? Or is it such a dull thread that it'll be full of tumbleweed?

As long as my player's face is blurred out, I don't have a problem with someone doing this...

I love how how it seems that Kurt is applauding all of you comments with childish, if not slightly mentally challenged enthusiasm.

Hello there

I can see i being possible in the mod, but it would be vastly time consuming and resource intensive.

Its not going to be possible in the SA for some time to come.

Port the map to A3. That simplifies the problem.

I don't see anyone actively punishing me or the other hundreds of users who've ported Chernarus+ to A3.

If you post about it publicly and post videos about it you will be punished for it, as it is against the ToS. It's like downloading porn. As long as noone knows and noone finds out there's not much you have to expect.

Thanks for the clarification. I had no idea there were any rules against it, but I'll pipe up about it.

Hello there

There's lots of things one can "do" if one wants, it does not mean that they are right or legal to do.

And posting about it here can get one in trouble as its against our rules.

It may not be "logical" to you and even "unfair" but thems the rules we have to enforce.

Actually, a little bit of a tangent before anyone goes there- Downloading "pornography" (blanket term aplied to any media depeciting sex acts), or viewing it isnt generally against any laws (atleast in the US).

\

the 2 most notable exceptions are;

-Child porn (media depicts under age persons in the sex acts)

-coppyright infringement (professionaly produced materials are generally protected under copyright law and re-distributing them is thus punishable. this applies to pretty much any commerically/professionally produced media tho)

On-topic i would really like a google-maps like app on the web to reference. would help when you find yorself at one of the new cities and arent 100% sure being able to rotate and view the area in 3d with your net map :)
