daringd 88 Posted June 7, 2014 Play style shaming seems to be a trend that never ends here on the official forums and on reddit. I wanted to take a moment to try and figure out how other people play the game and use/(ab)use the features and who might be the real personality behind the survivor. I started out as an all around goody-two-shoes, trying to help out new spawns when I could and spending the rest of my time trying to avoid other players. This reflects my real life personality somewhat, I avoid confrontation, I try to be nice when possible and make excuses for people when they screw me over, I like to find the good in people, even when it isn't there. More recently I found myself giving in to temptation while in-game and becoming a real nasty piece of work. I don't always kill on sight, most of the time I find myself circling other survivors to see what they are doing, if there are groups I try and figure out if they are nice guys or bad guys, but not for any good reason. I find myself playing the role of the guy who gets in with a small group and becomes a valuable part of it, spotting, popping zombies and sharing food and ammo, but the whole time I'm just trying to figure out who is who, how they play and how, when the time comes, I can split them up and take them out one by one. I've saved new spawns from zombies and taken them on just to have a bit of company, only to kill them after a few hours of game play and take what they worked hard to get. In-game I don't just enjoy, but get off on deception, backstabbing and taking advantage of any shred of trust I can get my dirty little paws on, but in life that is not who I am at all. Some might say this is me living out the person I really want to be, or the person I really would be without the restraints of social convention, some might suggest I'm simply enjoying playing a role and others might say that it's some kind of release, none of this is really important, but it makes me wonder what other people are like in real life verses who they are in-game, no judgements, just some decent conversation and reflection.
Banana_Duck 121 Posted June 7, 2014 Last night me and my group made 2 friends fight to the death, the winner was dubbed "Hodor" he carried things around with us and was only reply with "Hodor"But regardless play as you want to play, a game without bandits or backstabbers is just boring. It's an essinstial part if dayz.
Evil Minion 943 Posted June 7, 2014 People like shaming others for not behaving like they think they should. Its kind of saying: "You can do what you want as long as you do what I want you to do." Thats just human nature. In the end its better if people just play the game their way and do not concern themselves with those pesky manipulation attempts. Chernarus needs villains as much as it needs heros, opportunists and bystanders.
Khanarac 252 Posted June 7, 2014 (edited) I never backstab or cuss but mostly KoS, unless I think I can compromise someone without endangering myself. My teammates say Im too merciful for dayz, esp for our playstyle. We hunt people, its just what is fun to us. If I'm in a duo or solo, if I can I try to save my victims if they fell unconscious, but in the heat of battle with larger groups it's usually impossible. I feel bad for people I have to kill at the airfield or somewhere far from the coast from time to time. Esp if it's clearly visible that they are noobs. This forum also plays a role. I think it influenced me in a way, in a bad way. I sometimes hesitated when I shouldve instantly shot someone, causing either teammates deaths or mine. The morality talk on this forum is somewhat out of place. I assume that most people want to get into a firefight, which this forum somehow does not agree on usually. But whoever I met wanted some action after a while of looting, and there is nothing wrong with it, and Id be rather killed on sight, than being compromised by someone who tries to humilate me and then shoots me anyway. Morality is something most people throw overboard if they launch this game, why would they bother? They just wanna have some fun and win battles. tobias winfro 305 Posted June 7, 2014 Dayz is all about freedom of choice, you can be a trickster, murderer, friend or hermit. Ive been playing experimental lately and I've gone back to helping people when I can after taking an every man/woman for themselves mentality in stable build. It has lead to some good times and some bad but overall its brought a bit of excitement back to Dayz instead of the usual get gear, go to Berezino or the airfields and shoot people. My point is, play how you want. Play to have fun and don't get pigeonholed into the same old everyday routine
Khanarac 252 Posted June 7, 2014 Experimental is awesome right now. People are roaming around everywhere, not the usual two spots. That enables a better experience alltogether...we need it to hit stable soon...

gannon46 788 Posted June 7, 2014 I personally don't act like I do in real life. I just try to always have situational awareness. if someones in trouble I usually will not help but will watch from afar because what I've noticed is a bambi in trouble usually brings in wolves either lookin for heroes that help anyone or to shoot the said bambi. At any mil base its KOS I think we can all agree on thats just the way it is and its understandable. If I run into someone i try and read them from voice if they have no mic i either try and escape or if your in my way and i want to go then we gotta dance. im not a goody 2 shoes and i don't consider myself a bandit though I've played both styles a lot ,now i try and survive. I try not to think of playstyles with this game anymore I think it just depends on what you want to focus on or achieve. Some folks want to be a hero and have there name sung in songs. While some want to be the most vile and feared creature in the country side one whos tales are told in fear and sorrow. And some want to be the wild man living in the woods living off the land never known and is a ghost to all even the dead.and this is all my observation and how i play and I'm sure there are shitloads of cats that think different or perceive the game in a different way and that's what keeps bringing me back is the evolution of the game and the folks that play it compared to when it was first released how its played and the tactics and encounters have changed makes me wonder what the future holds. NinjaTurkey 255 Posted June 7, 2014 I play as if it really is the apocalpyse. This means that humanity is on the brink of extinction. Of course this means kos is out of the question but it doesnt mean i wont kill. I class myself as a survivor mostly, not a hero or bandit. On the topic of playstyle shaming, sometimes its justified. Most people play this game as if the objective is to kill kill kill. Im not against killing but would it kill you guys to atleast talk first? Even if its just insults, i dont care. Hate the emotionless, robots that stalk this game.Like people say its a sandbox therefore peoples choice in what they do. But can people be smart about their choices? No for some reason they cant. Many times iv been in a gunfight with someone and they lost when if they had taken the diplomatic approach (or even betrayed later) they would have survived. It seems people go into the beastial, non human mode where all they want is blood blood blood.

tobias winfro 305 Posted June 7, 2014 Experimental is awesome right now. People are roaming around everywhere, not the usual two spots. That enables a better experience alltogether...we need it to hit stable soon...Only thing I dislike about experimental is when I get off of work, usually about 6pm est all of the working us servers are full. So I either have to play on UK servers or play the click and wait game for full servers. I feel like a heel for playing out of region but those folks across the pond are a hell of a lot friendlier than most peeps I've met on US servers
byrgesen 1341 Posted June 7, 2014 (edited) As far as im concerned, you can play how ever you like. But exploting known bugs, like seeing through walls and dupping ammo, is pretty much the same as hacking and cheating in my world, and i would ban for that, if i could :) I also dont like people who do nothing but KOS, because i feel theres so much more to this game then just killing everything that moves, and those people are "wasting" they're time in this game, but on the other hand, it wouldnt be the same without them, so we need them aswell. daringd 88 Posted June 7, 2014 (edited) Make no mistake, I am what you make me. Nice Soundgarden quote man... I agree with almost everyone. It's not to say that's how I always play, I really enjoy a little team work with friends from time to time too, and I could see myself running the rescue force gauntlet at various times. I've come across a few really cool cats who I've nearly been double crossed by while I was trying to double cross them, and I've had a few times where I have felt a twinge of guilt at putting someone down because they had great gear, but of it all, I've enjoyed the roller coaster. I find I get frustrated with a lack of imagination on the part of most players, though I wouldn't complain about it because it makes most players at least half way predictable, I just long for the day someone really screws with me.
