Well, after some intense PVP in Berezino, I've wondered if everyone else mostly engages in urban combat. Every time I engage in combat, the range is very small, never more than 100 metres. Is that everyone's experience in DayZ? A frantic player shout then a CQB shootout? Please tell me in the poll  :)

Usually between 0-200 meters. Don't really see the point in trying to engage someone further out without a scoped gun, unless I'm certain they can't run away. I'd much rather stalk them, then shank to the face.

It's usually better not to shoot unless you have to.

Most engagements I run into are in urban environments, so I'd say 50-100.

However, I am perfectly capable of performing well in a 100-200 meter firefight on an airfield. :D

I don't like being near towns or people for that matter, so if I kill you it will be from extremely far off with most of my "fights", if you want consider me dropping you from 400m+ without you knowing where I am a fight. I don't do well in close ranges.

If they aren't within 0-50m then I probably can see them. Then it isn't a firefight, it's just someone shooting at me. If i can see them then i fire back, thus making it a firefight.

Though I seem to loose all of my firefights...

Hang on let me get the list going.

Put 3 into someone with a magnum when they were across the room. The managed to close the distance and hit me with an axe before the server registered the shots (1000 ping).

Had a magnum out and a mosin on my back. Ran into a user of a mosin out in the Boondocks. I went to grab my mosin, he put a round into the floor and i ran. Another shot went past, i hid behind cover. Put 3 rounds from the magnum out to suppress. (what is it about me and 3 round bursts with a 357?) Ran back to a couple of trees on a hill, looked around the area. Couldn't see him, reloaded and went on my merry way, 357 in hand as much as possible. (I'd call it a tie...)

In the ship. Ran into an unarmed person earlier. I had a b95. We did nothing un toward to each other but didn't talk, I kept the b95 equipped to be sure. I found an axe better than mine on the ship and swapped it. Later after finding a pistol (no ammo) I rna into him again on the ship. He had my old axe. He came for me, dodging and somewhat going through walls. I emptied the B95 and he beat the crap out of me.

I was at NEAF, shotty in hand and reallt geared up. Another guy came up. I raised the shotty and told him to get out over direct. 1 min later he had come back with a splitting axe. I missed with the first shot but blew his knees out with the second. Reloaded and put the 3rd into his back. Pulled my Magnum and put another in his head (rule 2, double tap). Checked his gear it was all f*cked. (win)

10 mins later, switched server due to restart. I drop a silenced 22 with a single round in favour of a FNX (had a mag waiting). Moved on. 2 mins more and I notice a guy pointing a silver pistol. I go to raise my sawn off. *Bang* Shot me with my old gun.

Don't know why i bothered to write that out.

Almost always in the 25-50m range. A lot of the time we'll spot each other from a little farther and as combat progresses we eventually close the gap.

Normally about 25-50, though these days there has been a lot inside of the 25m marker.

A lot of point blank blasts to the brain for me lately :(

I keep it to around 50mm and a hair above.  I don't engage unless I make contact first, and never shoot beyond 100m if I can help it.  I want to make sure I kill and finish what I start.

50 to 100m was my selection. I prefer to range people and leverage the fact that most people don't know how to control their weapons to my advantage.

Most PvP I see is players coming face to face in a town or city, because players don't often branch out of the cities, that said I've had a few firefights at range out in the countryside, the most fun I've had in DayZ they were

It varies, really. I actively avoid people, so I don't see a whole lot of action, but it depends on where I'm at. Any time I'm in an urban area, it's between 50 meters and fucking arm length. Fields, roads, and military bases however, tend to stick in the 100-200 meter range. There are outliers, though. Me and five friends were looting up Balota, when we were engaged from quite far away (couldn't hear the shots, just saw dirt kicking up). We ran for cover, and spotted their silhouettes on top of the closest apartment building. 700 meters away. The next thirty minutes were spent returning fire, occasionally getting hit, and then flanking them whilst they were flanking us. They put up a damn good fight, as we outnumbered them by two men. Unfortunately for us, we lost three men in the process, and I barely lived through the experience. The 22. Sport might be to blame here, however...

Dchil you got one shotted by a .22 calibre weapon?

Knocked me out, I had ballistic helmet on. Not long after I was dead.

He probably had a good 30 seconds to line up his sights before I turned.

Urban combat is a bitch, but is made slightly less bitchy by the friendly assistance of my friend, Mr. 12 Gauge.

I actually prefer fighting in 3PP, as my laptop sucks donkey cock and whenever I go into 1PP to use the iron sights, I get an often-terminal case of stutter-lag. As such, I just place the aiming dot about knee-height on an opposing player or zombie. The fact that I have the shotgun zeroed (how to you zero a shotgun? Heh) to 100m usually means that, within the confines of an urban environment, the buck will hit about mid-stomach, especially since I am usually above my target (again, urban combat. USe the buildings to your advantage.)

I don't think I've ever tried long range, I don't see the point in exposing myself with the lag my bullet is probably going to hit where they were half a second ago anyway.

That and I almost never use a Mosin because you have almost no chance if someone with an M4 walks round the corner. Typically I use an SKS or M4 so it's close range I go for.

Never really tested out long range shooting and we don't get to see where bullets hit now so I don't really want to try it and waste ammo.

It would be awesome if they added in a target range, just some old decrepit thing at a military base we could practice at...or get killed practising at. Even though that'd probably happen a lot in an almost empty server I'd like to test out my guns since I'm mostly getting shot at from behind suddenly or shooting someone in close quarters who hasn't noticed me yet, no real aim judgement involved there...
