Remove 'sniper' rifles?

Recommended Posts

I just bought this game a week ago and although it's in alpha it has great potential.

I'm not new to pc gaming but am new to this genre.

Here are my thoughts.

In order for DayZ to shine it requires social interactions between players. It is after all an online multiplayer game. Although one irony of it is that 'contact' with other players is discourged in order to increase survivability.

Nonetheless, dispite the risks the best element of DayZ Standalone is undoubtedly the random human interactions. A quick browse on Youtube finds some great DayZ videos!

With that being said, allowing 'sniper' capabilites almost completely removes this element. It sucks to be moving around, doing your thing, and to be suddenly sniped from nowhere (especially considering the time you've put into getting your favourite load out).

Indeed, banditry, heroism etc. is at its best when people are at least in range of voice communication. Sniping from afar negates the need to come close and interact, whether it be to rob, kill, run away...whatever? Just at least get people together into a situation other than being shot from afar by some 'ghost'!

I realize the origins and history of DayZ and that the sniper rifle is probably a favourite of many of the players. No disrespect to them! But I believe it really does ruin this type of game. And it is another irony that the Chenarus topography is almost perfect for sniping??

However, there are many other better weapons that could be implemented? Weapons other than the traditional ones always used in FPS games? Or maybe a mix of traditional and exotic...whatever? But the fact that a sniper type rifle can be easily obtained and that it removes one of the most important elements of the game (ie. player interaction) should be reason enough to have a rethink?!

Would it be possible to somehow have this as a setting? Like have servers that didn't allow sniper rifles? Or keep those rifles in hardcore mode?

Anyhow. Thanks for ready this post.

The game "shines" as it is. If you are getting sniped a lot you are doing something wrong. I have 470hrs+ game play on SA and have been sniped once, which I totally deserved. I was applying a morphine in the ATC at the airfield.

You claim player interaction (ie talking etc) is the best element of the game but that is just your opinion. I believe the best part of the game is shooting people in the face.

Sniper rifles are great and should to my mind remain in the game. I would however like to see the number of optics that spawn drastically reduced - since the reintroduction of the tent spawns near military sites, it's not uncommon to find a handful of long range scopes in one looting session.

A sniper rifle will hopefully, once the game gets balanced in beta, become a very rare commodity indeed. If this becomes the case a sniper would actually become a cause for cooperation amongst players to isolate their position and eliminate them.

Yeah, you just need practice. Get used to common sniper spots and identify where they could be. I don't think snipers are that easy to find either, obviously the mosin is but the LR scope is pretty rare. Most of the snipers in berez are hacked or got from hopping.

I do however agree that they are far to easy to use and you should really need to get used to the gun to use it accurately.

Unfortunately i doubt players would team up, they mostly dont now so i imagine if snipers are rare, people will try to get them on their own. Also you can guarantee that you are gonna get shot in the back for it.

There is only one 2 letter word that I can think of to what you just said..

No.

Just because you have your own way of playing which apparently is social interaction and truces, doesn't mean everyone else has to play like that. It makes me puzzled knowing someone like you would even attempt to add a post to remove sniper rifles. It is an element that makes up the game and has been around since the beginning of the mod. I don't play like you and neither does 2/3 of the DayZ population. DayZ wouldn't be the same without sniper rifles, enough said. If you can't accept the game for what it shows, go to Steam and uninstall. :/

Sorry, I phrased that badly. What I meant was it becomes something fun and interesting to team up for, rather than being very normal. I didn't mean to infer that it was an incentive for players who otherwise distrust each other to team up.

I believe that LRS Mosins are too common just now, but I'm not complaining because it's only a side effect of the public hives, fast rebooting servers and loot distribution.

No.

It does not matter what weapons are available. Since the beginning of time, mankind has been killing. Even if every single weapon is taken out of this game, bastards would be running around and "Punching on sight." There is NO solution for reducing banditry; it is in the hands of the community itself to mature, or realize the game is a really fun free for all and get over it.

Want a list of every thread with the tag "Bandit" in it? Here. And here's one for snipers.

No, just add more survival elements and make zombies an actual threat so people have something else to do than sitting around waiting for victims to shoot. With more different gameplay options less players will go for this playstyle. And the occasional psycho sniper spices things up. The post-apocalypse-world would be pretty boring without proper bad guys.

Dont even dare to suggest that kind of shit after playing the game for just one week, FFS.

To the people replying to the OP: You guys are the reason people think our community is shit. Just look at you acting like total asses towards the chap. Be ashamed of your behavior.

To the OP: I do agree there needs to be balancing, but maybe not in the form you're thinking of. Sure it's not the best thing when you get sniped after collecting all of your gear, but that's life in DayZ. Sniping puts a "Background Pressure" on you as you never know when you're being watched. That's what makes DayZ special. Due to your unfamiliarity with this genre, it's expected for you to disagree with some aspects at first sight. And if there were no sniper, you could run rampant throughout any city without the fear of losing your head (literally). It requires you to move tactically and encourages teamwork. And that, my friend, is what DayZ is all about.

Essentially, the reason there is a sniper as of right now is only because the game needed one for the sake of variety. If you notice, the only logical scope you SHOULD only be able to attach to the Mosin is the PU Scope. The LRS (Long Range Scope) doesn't even have the same rail system as a Mosin. Not too long from now, DayZ will have loot that is regulated by a central system. This means out of 100 servers, only 10 (say M40A3 sniper rifle) may spawn. Thus, reducing the amount of high-value weapons, making them a real target and treasure for anyone in the game. I hope you understand the concept.

If you remove Sniper Rifles, you may aswell remove every other weapon. Every weapon can be used to snipe a target, whether it be a M4, an AKM (With the new PSO-1 Scope) or just one of them cool Longhorn Pistols which are coming out soon enough. If you remove the Mosin and what not, players are going to find a new weapon which is decent enough to pick off targets from a distance with.

Instead of removing Sniper Rifles, why not make the system more complicated and more skill-based. Perhaps you could add Windage (Much like ARMA II ACE) so you have to account for more than just range. It wouldn't be too hard to add in a Kestrel 2500 Wind Monitor to the loot tables either.

This, and ammo being rarer won't hurt us too much either.

i have to disagree with the op , if im running around carefree on dayz, i want and expect  a 7.62x51 in my skull to remind me how foolish i was being.

anyway op, just think before you move more, you might be suprised how much care you can take, and how much it can help, good luck in dayz, its good challenge.

Sniper rifles are definitely the embodiment of random irresponsible kills, you can just take potshots at people who will never be able to retaliate, without risks, or reason. In the confine of DayZ it really is the weapon class that embodies the "because i can" mentality.

It also is constantly glorified in pretty much every war movie to date (nobody ever talk about the important role of the machine-gunner in keeping his squad mates alive :/ )

I agree with making ammo rarer, 7.62 ammo for the Mosin isn't that bad, but I have 600rds of M4 ammo and I don't have an M4, I find magazines for everywhere. (I take them and empty them around the world)

yeah, hopefully they make ammo rarer.

But another thing they could do is actually make the Mosin 7.62x54R like it should be, making it different from other guns.

This forum is all about RPG people vs. FPS people. On public servers this game is about military tactics, and cheating. You have to join a RP group with a private server to avoid being randomly shot by kids.

Or you have to go Rambo on public servers, loot up on empty servers, learn how to see trough walls, how to change the game settings to be able to see trough grass and trees, etc.

Just be aware of surroundings to me it sounds fine and to some such as the trolls may find this to be a post with you thinly veiling a hate on snipers due to being killed by one wanting them removied in friendly words I.E. me although I'm a helpful troll I still help people I think they just need to limit optics and availability of one

I don't think sniper rifles should be removed but I don't think they should be the end tier weapon. I hope later down the line sniper rifles require wind consideration as bullet drop is already in game. Also rocket launchers and mortars would make good counter sniper weapons and break up the whole sniper alley mindset..

Has been suggested hundreds of times since the mod released, NO, sniper rifles are not the problem, in fact, snipers are far less likely to shoot you than a dude with an M4 who bumps into you on a corner
