After playing Take On Helicopters for 2 hours, I say YES to helos.

Recommended Posts

I play Arma 3, Arma 2 with all DLC's, DayZ Standalone, sometimes the mod..and I've also heard that if helicopters are impemented in DayZ SA, Rocket would like something like the TKOH helicopter sim provides to us, so why not buy n' try? With this huge Bohemia sale on Steam going on..

It's friday night, I have time, so I filled myself with patience to start playing the TKOH copy I got yesterday, I remember playing X-Plane being 11-13 years old so this couldn't be much more complicated.

I felt open to learn.

In the Steam forums, the game's getting bashed, being that Bohemia has recently expanded their fanbase and a huge sale started yesterday.

But I'm really enjoying it, it's complex and it's realistic, which would make it PERFECT to be implemented in DayZ SA.

Just imagine all the gun n' run impatient kids who want fast action that would leave this game if they expected easy-to-fly helis and got something as complex as this. This is my first day in this game, if I had to get in the helicopter I found in a danger zone in DayZ, and make all the engine starting procedure, I would actually think twice about what to do in that situation, unlike normally in DayZ.

How many snipers would be watching that helicopter? How many CLEAR shots do they have on me before I get far away? You're really easy prey there, so you would have to watch out for anything that moves out of the cabin, while doing the entire starting producedure, if you're lucky enough to get away, you'd have to fly carefully, which process involves lots of things to watch out for, not only not to crash into something, and then landing, which would expose your skull to heavy risk (you're an easy shot if you want to land the chopper AND be able to use it afterwards) while attracting attention from everywhere.

Sound awesome to me. Fair cons & pros to a civilian or military transport heli.

What do you think about transport choppers being implemented in DayZ with TKOH's complexity?

Salute! (Sorry, no grammar check, I'm really tired)

Making them harder to fly is only one way of making them suitable in Standalone, but it's certainly a start!

nope.

First of all, a helicopter isnt just hard to fly, it's much harder to maintain. They consume insane amounts of fuel and their parts would be even rarer than the helicopter itself.

Helis created most of the metagaming in the mod, make spotting bases easy from 800 meters in the dense woods (if you can call dayz woods dense, lol), and consequently will make building a base pointless.

Without mention that it will ruin base raidings and squad fights, as the never ending picking up fresh spawns can and will be done by clans, making defending a base pointless (see epoch, as a example).

Unless the devs make them even more unrealistic that they already are in the mod, by making them easier to shoot down, they'll only ruin the game.

As the carebear army was preching on the tank thread, "IF YOU WANT HELICOPTERS, GO PLAY TOH, DERP".

When you mention how fast they chug fuel, I pictured how many times I will see someone running out and abandoning it mid air.

There goes ANOTHER rare helicopter.

But a transport helicopter trying to land properly or take off, manned by a newbie pilot with a realistic process like in TKOH and not in Arma is an incredibly easy shot.

With TKOH's realism, it's complex on both sides, because the clan with the chopper will have to have a person only dedicated to flying, who will be an easy target.

It's easy to fly in Arma, but unless you have some practice, TKOH's mechanics are more complex and difficult. You can break your chopper just by flying it unproperly and just breaking the engine mid air.

And the manual starting procedure takes a while compared to Arma, so unless you have played it, don't tell me it's easy.

people will just keep one dude at the air scanning the terrain with 3rd person, while all of the clan will get where the tents/enemies/whatever are.

Even if it's hard, they just have no place in dayz, they bring the worst of the metagaming from the mod back into the game.

Yeah, and it's not meta gaming since it's helicopter implemented in the game. Whoever has it should be rewarded for their hardwork and dedication.

And honestly, how hard is it to get crap back? And you should probably hide your tents better.

Like clans who run the server?  I'm sure they worked extremely hard to get those helicopters

I have said this all along if /when they add helicopters TOH style is a must ( seeing the game is actually built on the TOH version of RV3 rather than arma2 version of RV3 and it was the developers original intent) when coupled with the enormous amount of work it should take to fix/maintain/fuel i dont think it will be op specially if they stick to civilian or un armed versions.

Really unless you have played TOH there wont be to many flying heli as if its as hard as it should be to get fixed in the first place will you really risk this asset to john doe who has never played TOH.

Just the starting procedures will stop many would be fliers and thieves and allow plenty of time for small arms fire to ruin there day lol..

While realistic flying is good it still does not solve the problem of helicopters fundamentally changing the core game.

When and if choppers are added the game will lose touch with itself it will be a different game a inferior game.

Peoples safely hidden stashes up north will all be vulnerable to be gone with a single pass of a helicopter.

The game will go from feeling like a low tech survival game to turning into BF4 with zombies.

with players sticking out from the ground texture like they do in RV engine?

You can literally go around at 150kph and spot people easily in third person.

so you think exploits are OK, as they're on the game?

And helicopters arent on the game yet, and probably wont ever be. With all the duping and hacking problems, i dont think anyone would work hard for a helicopter at all, the clans would just dupe 20 main rotors after they find the first one and get an eternal repaired chopper, as they did in the mod.

And crap isnt supposed to be easy to get back, smartass, the only excuse they have right now for the fucked up loot system is that it's for testing. They'll change it soon, hopefully.

And you should know that there's no hiding shit in dayz, your tents literally stick out of anything you put them on, so unless you glitch them in khelm rocks, there's nowhere to put them.

Well, lets hope a Heli is a lot more difficult to repair, maintain and fly in SA than it was in the mod.

First time i played ToH i thought Seattle would make an awesome map for DayZ.

Of course getting to ground level reveals low textures but one day it'll be possible!

I don't have a problem with helicopters in the game.

A civilian one you found at a deserted holiday resort.
A medical one left on a hospital rool.

A police one sitting somewhere where their last mission went wrong due to Zed.

What I would hate and absolutely do not want in DayZ is:

Armed helicopters (no problem with shooting handheld guns from it, though).

No survivor ever can fly a high tech piece of equipment like a military helicopter.

Of course many would say... "Ah... my character... is that 1% that has learnt it... he was a heli pilot for the.... blaaaah (continue silly story)" in order to go for the thing, and turn the game into more MilSim again where some search for food, and others spray hellfires at towns. That's not compatible.

Your thinking of Private hives many have vehciles that spawn at full health or admin tools that allows clan admins to see where everything is. Don't make judgements about features based on the fact that some servers were abused by bad admins.

By that logic lets take out eating, drinking, all weapons because an admin can just change a number in a table to make you dead when you log back in...

.

Where does the Huey fit in that?

Technically its just 2 lmgs on metal posts, those type were the only armed helis in vanilla dayz.....only mods like epoch gave full on attack helis :)

They were already too hard to control for kids in DayZ and Arma 2 also had specific players who'd pilot in domination and such (I loved to be the pilot). To make them even harder to control would do wonders. Nevermind finding the chopper, learning to fly in the first place would be difficult enough. Especially now that there is no Arma out there for some easy Heli lessons. Most wouldn't even touch helis if they found them and only specialised players would be able to control them.

we should have this system; the official manual has PAGES dedicated to start up proceedure (which this guys doesnt seem to do in order but it works just the same)

I have had that game, actually, today after getting hyped by TKOH, I got my DVD copy of DCS: Black Shark out of the shelf to install it in my PC again but it didn't work, luckly there's DCS: World for free on Steam.

Holy crap I remember having a hard time trying to get that thing to fly :D .

But..while I would love it...that would be WAY too complicated even for the most old school Arma pro's, and that would make DayZ very fun with helis, it would make them special, rare or not, and seeing the sight of one proudly flying would terrify the players.

You could even make your own business, earn your daily beans and ammo by doing air-taxi, controlled by the rare people who have the patience to learn to fly one of these.

While we're at it why not impement X-Plane physics into DayZ?  :D

Luxury jets in the zombie apocalypse, sure take off, now good luck trying to land.

Helicopter is necessary even if you don't plan on using it. I never used a heli in the mod but when you hear one flying not too far from you it really adds to the atmosphere and the need to hide in cover. It breaks up the boring running for miles not seeing anything different.

Plus it's a sandbox game so heli adds a lot to the game in terms of more things to do like trying to capture it or creating a flying medic group.

With DCS style takeoff/landing procedures, there certainly ought to be armed helis.

the KA-50 would be right at home seeing as there was a russian presence acording to A2. :)

From a practical standpoint the hind would make more sence tho as it can also carry guys in its rear compartment.
