Server admin rules too strict.

Recommended Posts

I understand the public hive concept.  What I do not understand is in order to host a server, our choices are very limited to a few companies that are allowed to gouge prices at their will.  I pay almost $80 a month for a 30 player server, whereas the resources actually used would fit on a $29/month budget dedicated server.  These companies GOUGE the players!  The prices are HORRENDOUS.

So I pay my $80 to admin a server for a month.  Even though I pay my own hard earned money to play a game I bought on my own server, I am only allowed to restart regularly, kick abusive players, etc.  If I pay the money out of my own pocket to host a server, I should be allowed to essentially do as I please.  If I don't like a bandit that keeps killing players, I should have the right to ban him.  I should have the right to declare PvE if I choose to.  I should have the right to password protect my server if I so choose.  It's MY money paying to host this.

If the development team has to have such strict rules pertaining to hosting, then pay to host your own servers.  Not like you have not made buckets of money already.  If these rules are this strict in a game with no rules, maybe you should host multiple servers yourself instead of screwing the gaming community admins over with bloated pricing and zero control.

Obviously, I will not renew my server, which has jumped up in rankings quite quickly.  I love playing DayZ but frankly am sick of this totalitarian regime.  About a dozen friends and I are moving on when this server expires.  Not because we have problems with gameplay.  Because we have issues with the overpriced servers and ridiculous rules.

It's MY money.  I'm renting MY server.  I should have the option to do essentially as I choose.  DayZ is cracking down on anyone not following server rules as stated by the dev team and shutting down any servers that are not within the guidelines.  Meanwhile, we have ghosters, folks using aimbots and wallhacks, etc. ruining the game for folks.

Instead of pointing the finger at server admins, find a way to keep people from cheating.  That will exponentially improve the DayZ experience.

1. You agreed to the rules when you bought your server.

2. The devs get no money from the server hosting companies, although I will agree, they are very over priced.

3. Just because you are paying for it doesn't mean you should be able to do what you want.  Imagine if the world worked that way.  Example: The government is being funded by my hard earned tax dollars, so fuck the rules, I should be able to kill that guy if I don't like him with the chance of zero consequences.

4. Unless you have 100% legit proof of hacks, don't say people are hacking just because they killed you.

5. The game devs have nothing to do with preventing cheaters, thats BE, so go talk to them.

Just what exactly has happened to you by the devs or the hive or even your server provider to make you feel this way? I agree with everything you have stated here in this post but,I am curious to why you have brought it here and the reasoning behind your obvious rant.Have they shut your server down for some kind of violation(s)?

I agree with you on the price of servers.

Disagree with your unhappiness about the terms of agreement/use.

It's kind of play by their rules or do one. You do have choices. You could play on someone elses server for nothing, or not play at all.

I like the fact that they have a set of rules like this. It means that admins that kick you as they don't like the way you are playing, or admins that in the middle of a firefight start kicking everyone on the server so you go into the log off animation then they can kill you, can be reported at least, and maybe some action may be taken. I must have personally reported over 10 servers.

Let alpha and beta happen, and when the game is released and all the private/modded servers are allowed get your server then, and be happy.

For now, suck it up or don't. B)

Basically you got a server too early lol

I looked into it but decided against until the prices drop, and mor importantly, private hives come along. I think that's what you are wanting here. A private hive where you can enforce your own ruleset.

Doing that on the pub hive just isn't feasible from the fair play viewpoint. So you enforce pve....then a bandit clan joins, gets fully geared at no risk. They then locate to an amazing nest and swap to a pvp server.

A bit of patience and you will have pretty much everything you want in the OP. You have made the best move you can by letting it expire and waiting till dayz can fit your requirements :)

There's no point in buying a server.  No, mine was not shut down; I abide by the rules.  I'm just saying, if I am paying that much, I should have control of my own server.  If players don't like it, there are others.  All server owners from Vilayer were just given 10-20 minutes warning via email that if their servers do not fit the rules exactly, every violator's server will be shut down.  10-20 minutes warning on enforcement of something they have left alone until this moment!

This game is being driven into the ground by overpriced hosting and stupid strict rules.  Bohemia needs to host ALL servers themselves if these rules are going to be this strict.  I simply wanted to host a server and have my team help noobs learn how to play.  It's not worth the hassle.  My money would be way better spent doing other things; and that's what's happening with a lot of admins.  They are finally realizing they are only paying extra money to play; these stringent server rules eliminate the draw to host your own.

Instead of cracking down on server admins, how about you fix the gameplay issues; put your focus on the physics so zombies can't run through walls, spawn on top of you?  So we don't fall off of things that we should be fine with?

2,000,000 players means $60,000,000.  That's a load of change, especially for a company that only has to host 1-2 servers for hive information.  Obviously not much is being spent on development; these simple physics issues should have been fixed immediately.  The problem is the game was built on an unstable platform.  Physics are so screwed up, it would take a total rewrite to repair it at this point.  I'm a retired software developer, and am frankly disgusted with the lack of dev progress while this game pockets so much money.

The updates that were listed as added, including the new town up North...  They are not there.  The blog says they were released, but for some reason someone can't simply take $1 out of that $60,000,000 to realize they posted false information.  It's a mess!

I will spend my time working with other, promising projects.  DayZ is a blast, but the corporate end has ruined it.  Too bad, so sad.  Just wait until Steam files a lawsuit against Bohemia because this game has not abided by Steam's rules.

So now your ranting about bugs, you can have what you want if you just want. I get you need to vent but man, tis turning into unhinged ranting, about more than server admin issues.

You wouldn't buy a new car that states 50mpg then rant if because you aren't getting 60mpg. You were fully informed, and made a consumer decision. Maybe not the best decision, but you seem to have wanted something it clearly states you cant have...... YET ;)

You have exactly as much control of your server, as you knew you were going to have when you paid for it. Now that you have it, you are unhappy with the limited control of the server that the devs will allow DURING THE ALPHA TESTING PHASE, and you are unhappy that you can't #login as admin and have god mode. Does that about sum it up?

You are paying for the privilege of hosting an ALPHA server. Yes, they are retardedly expensive and no one will deny that. But no, you do NOT automatically get free reign to do what you want, when you want, how you want- not now, not while the game is in testing. As someone who has been running an SA server for over 4 months, I look at it as building a rapport within the community and creating a familiar name, someplace they can trust to be run fairly, so that when we *DO* get those uber-powers, they will be more likely to stick around and play. As a server owner I want a solid core of regulars- I am not paying for a private loot farm. I want to have my server full as often as possible without having to rely on my crew making sure it's populated. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.

Do yourself and the community a favor and don't renew at the end of the month. You are EXACTLY the problem with badmins and why those of us who run reputable servers have such an issue with maintaining a decent playerbase. Wait until release so you can run your private hive lootfarm kickfest.

dude are you 12?

do you really think the hole 60 mio are going to get in the devs pockets? just think about steam platform etc. there are a lot of costs too!

on other side you accepted the rules of hosting a server, and this rules are clear. if you dont accept them, dont rent that server!

there are enough admins out there who abuse this server hostings! forcing in adminchat all player to come to NAE to fight. you kill him. Serverrestart.GG

Or you have a Gunfight in Berenzino. Whole group gets kicked... reconnect, 2 got killed and looted by admin.

thats probably what you did and now you got your bill.

The funny thing about your accusations is I don't do that.  I don't take advantage.  I would like the ability to run my server how I please, considering it's my PRIVATE FUNDS paying for it.  This company either needs to run their own servers or allow those who spend their personal funds to do as they please.  Simply stated.

so ok i think you just dont understood the important thing, that this game is in an cunstruction progress and actually they need the data from the servers, so every server has to be connected to the hive servers. and this is why you have to follow the rules, so no admin can get in hard advantage by farming etc

People already get unfair advantages because protections against wallhacks and aimbots are not decently implemented.  Why focus on the server admins when the real problem is folks using exploits to gain advantage?  I just think their effort would be better spent repairing what's broken instead of focusing on admins.  If you don't like a server, don't go to it!  Simple stuff..

Lack of development progress.....this baffles me every time someone says it.

Maybe its because you haven't goy Kool Zeds yet, or the whole "they still run through walls" thing. Is it so hard to educate ones self and research what they are actually doing. The have implemented 2 very noteworthy systems into an older engine....those being Gauranteed network messaging and the network bubble. On top of that they are working on 64bit servers and pulling the renderer to update it.

And as for that zombies through walls thing....google l4d navmesh tutorial.....then take a pot guess at how long it would take to do something akin to that on a map like chernarus.  Not to mention they were only able to bring on board a dedicated studio AFTER the initial success.  They had to take time to decide how to spend the money, where to spend it, sit down with people and discuss how to spend it. Then after deciding the studio they went with has to actually be brought up to speed on the engine....and then.....after all that.....START WORKING.

Money can create as many issues as it solves

I will concede that 10-20 mins is completely unreasonable to ask someone to make there server conform. Work social engagements could all get in the way of doing it. But hey if you didn't conform in the first place to the ToS you kinda did it to yourself. Also im sure a quick reply email to say your at work but will make the changes ASAP would have been ok.

PS why compare hacking to server admin rights? server admin rights wont change for the pub hive....ever, hacking will be phased out by ban waves....I really don't get this. You are not in any way being vilified like a hacker

The engine the game is based on has major issues.  Physics are far too inefficient to implement.  It is a nightmare taking something written for an entirely different purpose and attempting to bend it to your will; a more modern engine would have made for a better foundation.  SO essentially we have folks trying to patch the walls on a house whose foundation is collapsing.  It makes no sense, even from a development standpoint.

The mod was bending something to your will, this is not. This is being coded from the ground up for dayz. Hence...taking a while.

OK so the BRAND NEW physics SDK is a lil wonky...but its a prototype. Nothing works flawlessly on the 1st attempt.

So the whole engine s flawed because this new feature didn't work perfectly 1st time round?

op doesn't seem to under stand the public hive concept as he claims in his first sentence.

no one made him rent his server so really he has no one to blame except for him self.

i looked into renting one but made the decision that they are over priced and not worth it at the moment.

i hope the public server owner rules and access remain as they are now as long as cheating is to the most part stopped when the game is released.

private hive server owners on the other hand should have full access to the server files.

I agree that the servers are absolutely overpriced, and quite frankly it's disgusting how they can get away with ripping communities off this much.

However, the Public servers have always had very strict set of rules - this is so that if you're going from one public server to another, you'll have the same experience, and you won't suddenly join a server with "PVE ONLY".

If I was going to rent a server (which I'm not going to do), I'd wait until the private servers take off and then you can apply whatever rules you find fair.

Because gametracker rankings mean so much. Got it. Rankings on a 3rd party website are cool and all, but mean absolutely jack shit if your playerbase is always random people joining and not coming back. Why not link yours here so we can all see just how kickass your 2-week-old server really is? Maybe you'll even get some of the chronic complainers here to join and play with you, and you can all have a cry-in and share tears of frustration over how your hands are tied by the evil devs and thieving GSPs.

Almost 20 years ago, I was on the development team for this new thing that was to be called the "Microsoft Network"(MSN).  If our alpha testers had received such buggy releases, they would have trashed the project from the beginning.  Since we were able to provide our concept with few issues, the MSN became elevated to the level it is currently at.  While not personally a Microsoft fan, I did learn a lot in my time with them.  There was not a huge budget to work with from the start, but we provided exceptional code and related services.

While I do understand DayZ is essentially community-supported, I do understand the public hive concept; I still realize that not only is this an overpriced lump of development nightmare, I see hosting companies exploiting the fact that they are a minority, so these ridiculous prices and such stick.  It is not considered legitimate business practice to stick paying users with so many bugs, bugs that could be ironed out quickly under the right circumstances..

I spoke with a longtime associate of mine, who currently designs 3D items for EA Games.  I asked him about DayZ and he cracked up laughing, saying DayZ was a total fraud. He frankly said that by design, this game will ultimately fail once the right pockets are lined.

Take it or leave it; I'm just giving the perspective of a retired developer and his peers.

It's my opinion and I will stick to it.  I do understand how admin control could change gameplay, but also understand that those who invest their own funds should have control over what they rent.
