Multiple Character Slots

Not sure if this has been discussed or not but I'd really like to see multiple character slots.

I find my playstyles can be quite different depending on who I'm playing with. Recently I've gotten my wife to play and we play very differently then when I'm alone or with my buddies.

It would be nice to not have to use my lone wolf survivalist when my friends want to go terrorize Electro or Berezino.

Anyways just a thought.

i dont think i want to see this, because for me at least, it will remove the need to stay live feeling,

i can understand why you want it, in some ways, for convenience and ease of play,

I would be for it if they were separated by servers otherwise you can kill someone then they hop on their other toon and run back and kill you and so on

I dont think this would be good if you could say, have 2-3 or more characters on the same server and by logging out and into the other character you would be back in the action again in 60 seconds with a full geared player. Thats not good at all.

 

But having 4 characters right now, between hardcore-regular stable, and the same on experimental at least we have that.. and there is bound to be private hives in some sense eventually so you could have separate gear/player/style on many different servers.

I have 2 carachter right now. 1 in normal servers and everytime I log in to hardcore I get my other.

There can be exploits via allowing this. When they allow bases for example, and you see people come to attack you, you can just swap characters and be behind them fully geared, while this can be done via server hopping, it would take much longer. Also you could have the other character be your storage mule, drop stuff on ground, swap characters, pickup, swap back.

 

So how does your play style affect what gear you have? If it doesn't, what is the point then? The negatives out way the positives. I'm sure there are also plenty more problems with it like extra character storage on hives, extra items to track etc.

I totally agree with OP! 

 

I wish to see this happen, because I have a group I always play more realistic and friendlier with, then I have a skype crew that always wants to shoot bandits.

This would be great

i dont think it fits the game-design. it would also negate the impact of perma-death because you could keep fully-geared backup-clones in storage.

 

i think one character per hive is absolutely fitting. and i say that as a person who twinks with a passion in MMOs. but i dont see it in DayZ.

 

 

remember guys that we will have community hives once the game is finished. so you will be able to have multiple characters - just not on the same server.

That's basically the work around I've been using. I use experimental right now when I'm playing alone and the regular servers when I play with my wife or friends.

It's the best I can do for now.

I am against multiple toons for a simple reason - you'll have your one "main" toon and then you'll have loads of freshspawns with no gear. 

Basically what will happen is people are gonna suicide run into high level loot areas hoping to get an item or two and get out alive - risking nothing - then going back where you logged out your main character, dropping the loot... Et voila. You thought server hopping was bad...

 

One character per server sounds interesting indeed. Sometimes you play on a specific server but when your friends wanna play on a different server (let's say it's more stable or something) you probably have to either suicide so that all of you can play together or carry them - carrying people is boring as hell, it's x10 more fun to start over, but losing the gear you acquired voluntarily sucks too.

There are many reasons why this is a bad idea. And, it will certainly be the case with private hives when they come around. Multiple characters work when they're FIXED to a server/instance, not persistent. Which is the approach they've chosen with the current public hive.

 

1. Your avatar in DayZ is meant to represent you as the player, not you inhabiting a distinct character

 

2. More character slots (on a public hive) would allow for a lot of detrimental activities (i.e. excessive loot hoarding, server hopping [until it's remedied], easy deathmatching, perhaps even unmitigated ghosting [in leaving one character at the top of NWAF, and one at the bottom], etc.)

 

3. I never really liked it in the MMO's I've played in not knowing who's who. I RPed in SWG for six years and it was insanely frustrating not knowing who's who from an OOC point of view when RPing with someone.

Yeah i'd welcome more the ability but then again i wouldnt try to exploit  the few bad things it could add it would be so I can keep a character for playing with friends and one for solo or with others its a shame people only ever think on the negative effects of adding things .

The only way I would be in favor for a multi-character is if you have one character per server like in Arma 3. Otherwise if you're allowed to have several characters "at will" then what effect does dying become? You'd simply get shot and then immediately respawn with your other "fully geared up" character, completely taking away the need to survive from the get-go. Yea I could see that being bad. Personally I like the perma-death the way it is in this game. This ain't Battlefield or CoD where you have different "Loadouts" for any scenario or play style. Pick one or do like many others do and use one of the 4 you already have provided (stable regular, stable hardcore, exp regular, exp hardcore).

If they did it they could stop you from re-joining the same server for an hour if you die on it. That way your buddys can still finish the fight and bring your gear to a new server, but you cant just re enforce the battle with your 2nd toon.

 

That being said I feel one on the public hive is fine. We can have limitless versions of ourselves when private hives come along :)

Yeah, I can agree with a lot of folks here about the abuse it could cause and I think 1 character per server is a fair compromise.

That would also eliminate server hopping as a byproduct. :)

pff yeah, way to want an even more exploitable game...

 

go on a server, having one char full equipped and the second as a coasty

 

go to place A, get gear easy because of full equip, drop gear at B

switch character, go to place, B, viola! your char is now equiped

 

or, even better, just have you second char be a backup berezino deathmatch character,

so you can show those darn guys who totally had the right to shoot you,

but now you know where they are and can get back right at them with all your gunz

 

this is not an arcade shooter

stop wanting to kill what makes this game different

As others have said locking our characters to a single server would eliminate those potential exploits. It would also eliminate server hopping.

I'm okay with that.

Nope, it shouldn't even be that. 1 character per hive, nothing more than that.
