Some RP items and 'minigames'

In a real zombie apocalypse after the dust settled and only the immune were left the biggest problem they would face after food, water & shelter would be loneliness, depression and (worse of all) mind crushing boredom.

 

Now i'm not suggesting Dayz tries to replicate this by making the game mind crushingly boring but i do think it should offer players other things to do than kill each other, or find the tools to kill each other, or repair the vehicles used to run away/too people trying to kill each other, or build the bases to stop people killing each other.

 

I'm suggesting things that have no survival functionality other than too make surviving worth it. I'm talking about trying to put a little fun and comfort back into a life in the zombie apocalypse:

 

For instance:

Chess Board

Pack of cards

Guitar

Harmonica

Tea Bags

Instant Coffee 

Cigarettes

Pipe

Vodka

(The books are a great start)

 

I won't bore you with the details of how i think they should be implemented as the devs could likely do it better and you can probably imagine how they might work. Playing cards would probably be the hardest to implement but it would just be so great to be able to pass the night round a fire playing a few rounds of poker while passing round the vodka bottle. If you've played Stalker and seen the groups of survivors chatting around barrel fires then you know what i mean, the RP potential of these items is huge.

 

I guess none of this would be implemented before Beta stage but it would greatly enrich the final game IMHO.

Id like to play some Cribbage or Domino's personally. Whoever loses is executed or forced to run through Cherno with a Lee Enfield with 1 mag of ammo.

I hate the stuff, it's revolting but at the same time, it can really turn a decent night into a pretty awesome night. The last time I did it, I managed to get into a street scuffle with 6 lads with only 2 of us. The police saw it all and we were told to go home while they were arrested for damage to public property and something to do with cutting a guys head open. 

The very same night I spent £200 in a strip club with nothing but a large receipt to show for it.

Honestly, it was a great night. I'm still remembering flashbacks involving excessive beer and champagne showers. It was a pretty big night, after my 8 year long career I had decided to move on and start a family, so we made the most out of it. I also managed to talk my way into a five star hotel, walk behind the bar and pour myself a beer. If it wasn't for the lads, that definitely would have landed me in a cell for the night.

Cards is an excellent idea.. the deck of 52 could be placed in the game and you just play what ever card game you can think of.. the cigarettes is a strange one.. I dont see why not but at the same time I dont see why we should have them in game purely other than "ROLE PLAY" what purpose could they actually serve ?

 

calm the nerves after you are panicked perhaps ? In the same way of how you could get panicked in the mod BUT you could smash a durry to calm your self down...

I'd love to have Vodka in the game, the actual use for it could be to use it for desifection (like tincture), plus an option "drink" to get drunk just for the heck of it and then the character can't walk straigt anymore and will stumple around instead of walking straigt. That would add a lot of pointless fun  :D

 

Funny addon the status bar (where it sais thirsty, healthy, etc) could say drunk, and drinking too much will make the character puke...

there was talk in a stream about cigarettes, that they would possibly reduce shock. however then they would have to do some addiction or something to not "condone" smoking in the eyes of clueless bureaucrats.

Minus the weed, that sounds pretty good actually. It's a bit more realistic, not sure if you've ever watched The Book of Eli, but they trade with things like hand sanitizing wipes, etc. Stuff when currency goes out the window, people would really want for a bit of luxury. 

 

I say minus weed because I'm not a massive fan of it.

yes i know its just what i would do if i was in the apocalypse and playing a round of poker. Yes i agree it would be little luxuries and things sought after, and definetly not gold or a currency of any kind like in epoch that kills immersion. real items not made up currency ...

How about a click and drag GUI? It could be down with chess and for cards, whoever has the deck and deal them to players by dragging them to them.

I love book at the moment, and am carrying World of the Worlds at the moment. It'll be weird for whoever finds it.

I wish to find a bible and put it in my vest for the odd chance I get shot and it may save me.

If it doesn't, I'll look for a Qur'an or something then.

They should add "Goodnight Moon" to the game...

There's a new game on Steam called "Tabletop Simulator" that has the perfect approach, DayZ-wise, IMHO.

 

Basically there should be no rules, no winning/losing, that's all up to players to determine. You can just move pieces around on a board, or hold cards in your hand/put them on the table. It's up to you and the other players to decide how to regulate turns, if people are following the rules, who is the winner/loser, if someone cheated by moving the pieces or pulling a card out of their sleeve when you weren't looking, to grab the prizes in the middle when you think you won, or even to flip the board/table over and pull out a gun if you think you were wronged. Everything, down to whether the game is fair or not, should be completely player-driven.

 

A freeform model would also allow players to make up their own versions/rules for any minigame for which the set/pieces get added as content. For example, chess variants. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_variant
