1 bullet = everything in backpack destroyed!

Recommended Posts

Is this always going to be the way? It's so annoying that if your assualt vest for example gets shot once everything in it except guns gets ruined.

You might get hit in the leg once but survive the firefight only to find that your morphine and rags and sticks have all been ruined by one freaking bullet.

I get that they couldn't have realistic placement of hitboxes all over clothing so that if a can is at the top right of a backpack and the top right gets shot only the can is destroyed but it's incredibly stupid that EVERYTHING gets ruined in whatever is hit.

They should just make it destroy one or two things at random that would be way better. Then if you get shot up at least you might still have bandages and morphine to save the day because you have no hope if all that is destroyed, as whoever you killed is going to have only ruined stuff too.

So even if some jackass jumps you and gets a few shots in, in the end they still win since it's damn near impossible to survive having to roll about.

Especially sucks when you get shot unexpectedly but survive and get ready to arm yourself, only to find all your bullets for all your guns are ruined, however that could even happen.

By the way, a tip. Don't empty ammo boxes until you need to, if the box gets ruined you can empty it and the bullets inside are still pristine. Literally the only thing that helps keep you going until they make the damage system make some form of logical sense.

Yeah apparently head shots are the only way to guarantee most of the gear from being completely messed up.

Bullets destroying equipment forces characters to decide whether

  • to spray n' pray to get a kill,

or

  • find a way to capture the survivor to preserve the loot.

Just my opinion, but I feel like equipment damage from bullets should be kept 'OP' to maintain the integrity of DayZ.

You are looking at it from only one side of the argument

The problem is if you are on the receiving end. You might be a hero, get shot once turn around and kill the "AGGRESSOR" and now all your shit is ruined. You had no choice and yet you are excessively punished for nothing.

It actually creates more spray and pray because people think well if I die in this attack I want to at least ruin all his shit.

All I do is KoS and it is very rare I want something of someones else's body but I hate it when they ruin my stuff.

I want it in the game, but I think it does need to be pulled back a little bit. I think 1 bullet = 1 ruin item is a pretty fair balance.

Huh. Rodger dodger-- Can't argue with that.

They could also give larger items a higher likelihood of taking damage or being ruined. Smaller items would inversely be less likely to take damage. I don't think that would be too difficult to design.

How is it determined which item is destroyed? If this was the system, I and many others would be forced to stuff our backpacks with random shit, just to negate the chances of my important items, such as scopes or rice from being damaged. As well as adding a needless random/luck mechanic to the game which can't be negated by skill.

Is where you get shot on your body determined by skill? Shot in the front is a random vest item(s), shot in the legs is random pant item(s), shot in the back/backpack(large hotbox in some cases) is random backpack item.

Putting more valuable items (ammo, bandages, etc) in your backpack makes them harder to access quickly, but less likely to be hit with a stray round. And because some items can absorb damage, there is some strategy in item placement.

And larger rounds with higher kinetic energy might cause "splash" damage that damages multiple items. This would make it necessary to check every item to see if if had taken damage the shot (assuming you survived). I think this would add a nice little element of uncertainty and anxiousness. Kind of like not knowing whether this police station will spawn that pistol mag you so desperately want.

I think the system could be done very well with some more development. Patience, friends.

Edit: and empty slots could have a chance of being "hit" to prevent the metagame bag stuffing you mentioned.

Considering I highly doubt they will create individual hit boxes for each slot, random would be fine. I would like to know the mechanics for the backpack because that seems very random at the moment. Sometimes i get hit once and everything is destroyed and and sometimes only a couple of things. However one shot in the pants and everything is destroyed.

So yeah the whole system needs work.

Patience, friends.

Lol no one is here has shown any impatience, we are merely discussing a mechanic in the game, how it works now and how we think it should work whenever the developers get round to addressing it. We are not demanding it now and in fact this a great example of how things should be discussed lol

Does anybody know if the protector cases help in this case? I put most things in protector cases, but never have been shot there. Last encounter has been with a zombie and that ruined my tactical shirt and the revolver in it.

Btw Is the ruined ammo split glitch actually a glitch? I mean think about it. If you have a pile of rounds and bullet goes trough it, there is no way that every one of them are ruined.

rags should be immune to damage, you can't fuck up a rag with bullets enough for it to be useless as a bandage.

they absolutely do help. backpack helps too. I usually only put food/canteens and disposable crap in my clothes and everything important in the pack. press vests protect everything 100% i'm pretty sure.

i think it is a good suggestion that randomised % of items within ruined clothing get ruined, why dont you bring it to the suggestion forum, op

never thought of that, but if you have 60 bullets, you can split them until you have 59 pristine, its not like 1 bullet got shot.

It's a work in progress.  The alpha is for adding in systems, the beta will be for balancing things so I wouldn't expect it to change before then though I suppose it's possible.

It is pretty much guaranteed to change at some point.

Your backpack counts as a chest slot item, so being shot in the front of the chest ruins shit in your backpack as well.  The reason you might seem to have less shit ruined in your backpack some times is probably to do with having essentially 3 layers of "protection" on your chest, in the form of your shirt, your backpack and your chest holster/vest assuming you're wearing any combination of them, where as your pants have just the one layer.  That would be my guess any ways.  Condition of your items matter as well, as a pristine shirt being shot by a smaller caliber round might have a chance at not completely ruining everything inside.  More often than not of course things do all get ruined, but there is some chance involved.

There are also hitboxes for your limbs as well, so one could speculate that a shot to the arm might ruin your shirt but not your pack, although considering that a backpack counts as a chest item I'm not sure that their hitboxes for items themselves are that detailed.  Maybe a shot to the arm ruins your gloves?

i like to think that when rags are ruined by gunfire, its my blood spilling all over them making them useless.

A friend accidentally shot me in the foot with an m1911 two days ago and it ruined my shoes, my pants, my shirt, my backpack, and everything inside them.

Item damage needs to be toned down, there's no doubt about that. Take my beans..

That's probably why it works this way. You shouldn't be able to skirt around the system by doing this kind of thing.

Right:

Problem is, it might save you from bullet damage but your backpack is the only thing zombies leave alone - Ive had 1 hit from a zomb ruin my jacket and the stuff in it including an FNX (ruined) and a spare FNX mag (severely damaged) morphine (damaged). I didn't bleed, killed zomb, after 2 mins when I looked my health was full, jacket ruined, stuff ruined. And you cant keep morphine in your pants as we all know. Backpack is safe from zombs but one bullet that - more or less- "misses" you... (its a hit but you're ok, soon healed), can wreck three-quarters or half  of your backpack gear.

Rice and water and bandages and morphine you have to keep scattered around your pockets and pack, and magazines or clips.

So maybe your backpack damage saved you from the bullet - but the gear is damaged like a heavy truck ran over it and then REVERSED. And maybe the gear in your pockets saved you from the zomb hit, but effects on your gear is the same!

I shot a zomb at the same time as she hit me, and when I shot again, the gun went - click - click - the FNX in my hand was RUINED by the zomb punch. That IS a MEAN punch. But at least I got away without everything in either my pants or my jacket being flattened out.

Yeah in my opinion it is way too extreme sometimes.

I got shot from a Mosin one bullet to the chest and i died. My mate killed the shooter and i came back to loot my dead body. Vest ruined, tactical shirt ruined, backpack ruined and ALL items in them.

And yesterday my mate got shot with a mosin, one shot and he survived, but again vest, shirt and backpack and all items ruined.

Thats way too much.

What always amazes me is how a couple of bullets can make any clothing item go from pristine to ruined. Because ruined implies you can't repair it with a sewing kit anymore. But a few bullet holes shouldn't be too hard to patch now should they? It's also weird how every item in your clothes is usually ruined when your clothing is ruined as well.
