Train Suggestion!

I absolutely know this has been suggested many times over... but, most suggestions I see have been about making real trains workable again and repairable... I don't believe that would make any sense and would be so hard in real life to apply maintenance to a train without actual hardcore tools. HOWEVER, if you watch the video I posted below.. this is a real world application that could easily be applied to the world of DayZ to make trains or "Norrys" a thing. The Video even points out how they scavanged the parts off old TANKS to make these Norry's, it can't get more perfect then that!  Again, I know its been suggested before, this is just an actual vision of the suggestion I could see being actually being implemented and making sense.

Link is dead.  The condition of the locos on the tracks actually look to be pretty good, the thing I'm against is that they'ed be a bitch and a half to fuel up, and their not exactly easy to turn on and operate.  Motorcars/coaches would be easier to get going, along with MOW Speeders or even handcars, but you'd still be blocked by the cars/wagons and engines on the tracks.

Because power stations aren't sentient, they don't know that no one is around to NOT use the electricity. So assuming no one shut down the power station during the "exodus" that would undoubtedly ensue during a catastrophe on such a scale, then power stations would keep generating electricity until it's fuel source ran out or a fault occurs. If it's a nuclear power station then it could continue to work for centuries or until lack of maintenance causes it to go into meltdown.

For the fuelling maybe a semi-automated thing could work. Add a "Fuel Car" or even just a tank next to the tracks in a station. Then give us a "connect Hose" scroll option. Could still be a 5-10 min affair if you wanted full fuel, but at least it would leave the player free to cover it. Maybe even have loot items required to start refuelling.

 

Could be cool if they positioned some of the other engines and cars so there were ways through that required getting out and flipping switches.

 

If they wanted to go full realism (and with bandits in mind) they could have those boxes that trip the breaks placed along the tracks. Then have a key to the box as a super rare loot item in train stations. Could lead to interesting wars between people trying to run a train service, and the railroad bandits  :)

 

All in id love a train....maybe 2 per server :)

I would love a train or something similar too, but 2 trains would be a problem since there is only one main railroad.

 

I would like to see one train going all over the track from start to end.

Not really, it would take a little bit of work but there are sidings and spurs for one train to go on while the other passes, I haven't done a count myself but there is more than one loco on the map.  IE you have your heavy loot train of one engine and 2 boxcars (storage).  You see a loco and some cars up ahead blocking the track, so you connect to that (if it's operable) and hook up the MU hoses, go till you find a siding or spur, disconnect and put the 'spare' train on the siding, and continue on your merry way.

It's a diesel railway, as you mentioned there's no services for steam (no water towers, no coaling towers (though they could use oil ((and by extension diesel)) fired locos), ash pits ect) and there's no overhead gantry or 3rd rail (3rd rail would NOT be viable for a right of way such as this) and while the technology of 'battery operated' locos is improving, it's still limited to switcher engines operating in yards, not on the main line.

Rocket and the team has done research on this, most power plants cannot go more than a week (some won't even go more than a few hours) with no human interaction, even a solar plant (photovoltaic being the most 'hands off') would need someone flipping a switch or rerouting power once in a while.  Given the condition of things we're at least a month after Z Day.  AFAIK Electro has the only power plant for the region, and it is not nuclear.

Would be cool but if you'd look carefully at some areas, you'd find that the train tracks are sometimes disconnected and are deformed.

Alright I've see it now, they would have thous in areas where the right of way is more or less abandoned.  I don't know what the Soviet/Chenarus equivalent of a Speeder would be, but that would be the closest to that.  Most of the lighter ones can be de/rerailled by hand fairly quickly and be off the tracks in a couple of mins.  Chenarus is a bit more developed than that, and while I've seen no evidence of it they would either have commuter service (one loco pulling 2-3 hi-cap passenger cars) or Motorcoaches/RDCs (passenger cars equipped with motors and a cab) which could operate independently or as units/with unpowered coaches.

I'm one of those dorks who really likes Train Sim 2014, and to have it in Day Them In Day Z would be freack n cool. It would be a twisted dream come true lol A armored train! 

 

Locomotives are super powerful, imagine driving through a herd of zombies with a freight train locomotive!!! Holy crap that would be asome!

Trains are actually fairly easy to derail.  A single 1-2" diameter branch can derail a 45 ton locomotive if it's placed on the tracks.  Now add a metric shittone of bodies and you have a train on its side and more than likely a dead or soon to be dead engineer.n

This is true, they are easy to de-rail which could create some fun for players who want to derail them. One could even make a run away train.

 

Here's the thing, arma 2 has rail road tracks same with dayz mod and SA. But from what I know no one has ever even made a mod to use them. Or have they? The way I look at it is if the rail road is there in the game. Why not put them to use, give them a use other then looks.  Its not 100% needed to have, but it would be a nice touch of detail.

It would be pretty epic! I would rather see a makeshift train system of some sort rather then large actual sized trains and I think this system would be a lot better and make more sense then say having helicopters...But, if we could get both that would be epic!

There's a couple of mods that have working trains (to varying levels of success IMO), one is even a mod for DayZ.  I sadly don't know the names of them, but digging around the 'train' topics on this forum will probably scrounge them up.

Why people would want trains boggles my mind. They would be easily destroyed due to them being restricted to one path (railways). Once IEDs come in, say good bye to trains

With that attitude, why do anything?  Someone'll find your car/base/camp/whatever and destroy it just because, so why do anything?  Just curl up into a ball and cry till someone comes by and shoots you.  Yes trains would probably be the easier thing to hunt down and intercept, but everything can be hunted down.

Well let me tell you why I posted this:

1. Its a public suggestion that can accept feedback of all types including negative ones. I am sure the OP is mature enough to handle it.

2. It is my own opinion, I have the right to post what I think, again referring to point 1.

3. Attitude? I am afraid you are mistaken for again that was more of what I would see happening in the future when crafting is added. Hell even when the grenade launchers are added.

4. "Curl up in a ball and cry" is quite. Common strategy that a lot of people use in many games. Everything can be hunted down and destroyed, but hey, why go through all the trouble getting the thing fully operational just to see a giant explosion on a train bridge and you going down straight into the river below. Or even off the tracks.
