Being Oblivious

Recommended Posts

Today, on Experimental, some fellow was shooting off his SKS. Like crazy.

So, I take cover in a house, look out the window, my Mosin and its PU Scope ready to lock onto this fellow and take some shots at him.

Eventually, I see him leave a house, and go down a road, so I get to a better position, as he is covered by some trees.

I see him, I get him in my scope, and I fire.

Miss.

I pull back the bolt, and I fire again.

Hit.

By now, he is yelling at me, telling me to not shoot, so I yell back, asking why he was firing so many rounds so carelessly. He doesn't answer. I tell him to put down his gun. He says he is going into the Church and that he won't come back.

I switch to a higher window, and see him inside the Church. I keep telling him to drop his weapon, because if he doesn't, it won't matter much to me, as he'll simply be dead, anyway.

He doesn't see me, too, he doesn't know where I am.

I am wearing bright clothing, inside a window, with the barrel of my Mosin sticking out of it. I am a target that would be rather easy to spot.

Yet he is completely oblivious of my position. He thinks he has cover, he thinks I can't shoot him, but I have my scope right on him.

I tell him my friend is going to come by and swoop up his gun. He starts fussing about, angry that we are going to take his gun. I don't think he understands the fact that we're not going to let him have a loaded weapon on him. Plus, I want the SKS.

He complains about my shot ruining all of his shit. He seems really mad, too, yet he still stands right out in the open, not moving.

Ah, what the hell, everything in his bag and shirt is ruined to begin with, along with that nice vest of him.

I squeeze the trigger, and he falls down, dead.

Now, sure, he put down his gun, but he was getting rather angry and didn't keep his cool. He didn't remain calm and wouldn't move from the area. I couldn't even tell if he dropped his gun or not at the moment, as there was still something on his back. Plus, he could have tried to went rambo mike tyson punch out on me, as I didn't have a motorcycle helmet.

He also had barely any blood, and was bleeding to begin with, and there was no way I was going to go and bandage this angry, careless, wounded fellow. No way. He would have knocked me out, for sure.

Either way- He was dead. If I would have just mugged him, he would have had nothing but a lack of blood and a need for vengeance.

So, yeah, that is why I shot him.

To make up for my bad deeds to such an oblivious target, we tried giving away stuff to fresh spawns...

Which resulted in one guy trying to pitchfork my pal. Didn't even scout out the area to see if someone was covering him.

He doesn't have working legs anymore, but he's still alive. We didn't leave him a splint, either.

Before we could give away the rest of the loot, including my mosin which I had switched out, the server restarted.

The main thing I can't understand is how he didn't see me. I was in a window, he was looking at me. Well, he looked at me more then a few times. Surely he must have seen me?

But he didn't. How? I don't know.

Just, remember, don't fire your SKS at zombies or other players or anything in the middle of Svet, because it might result in your death.

Maybe he ran out of ammo while he was firing off rounds initially?

He had 7 rounds in his SKS when I found it.

Some people just don't come into a player-on-player interaction with a combatant mindset.

This leaves them oblivious, frustrated. He couldn't see you because he was too busy panicking and flipping shit.

Good kill, my beans says he was a squeaker.

I'm normally friendly, but this fellow needs to learn that you have to be careful in cities.

He could have easily killed me. He had a better rifle for the situation, yet he panicked and put himself into a vulnerable position. He would have lived, had he not started complaining about my shot ruining his gear and how he wanted to keep his gun.

Maybe he didn't want to kill you?  What if he was firing to get peoples attention so he could interact with him?  You just became a KoS'er.  You are going to heck for that.  Down with with!!! DOWN I SAYS!!!

Fuck no, I would rather go suicidal and try to kill you, I'd die before I let anyone make me drop my gun at gunpoint in a videogame, even if it would take me less than 15 minutes to find another one.

NO ONE MAKES ME DROP MY FUCKING GUN.

Obviously didn't  read.

Look, you use the tools available to you. If I had a Mosin in that situation, and you didn't comply? Hell yes, your brains would paint the sidewalk.

Another unjustified, unjustifiable murder.

The world is full of bastards. I do despair.

I would've kneecapped him and then teabagged him. You're too nice, Aradia.

I shot a man in a video game. He was going to bleed out, anyway, from my first shot. Plus- It is a game, and it was also on the Experimental branch, so everyone's character will have to go eventually.

Ah, well, Rick, I prefer everything nice and clean, the second shot to his legs would have finished him off to begin with, but neverless a rather brutal idea.

Funny, my friend shot a freshspawn in the legs after that freshspawn tried to pitchfork him, and I finished the fellow off, I guess I just am too nice.

What's that one quote from around here? "there are no bandits, there are no heroes, just people making decisions" I always give them a chance if possible, I had a guy dead to rights magnum on his head and could have killed him, but I shouted "I'm a medic, put it down and I will let you go!" He drops his mosin on the ground and we exchange conversation about the good places in balota to try and find med supplies and canteens and then when I mention people ambushing me and he gives me his Long range scope in exchange for my PU scope. another time I shot at a guy on sight entering my barn with weapons drawn casue he LOOKED the part of a KoS raider. I then gave him a chance to stop. Still got killed, but I died knowing I gave him a chance to redeem himself, one that he squandered, and I missed my chance to win the firefight by using my sawn off instead of mosin or magnum. Learn and move on.

Everyone makes a decision, be it KoS and play raider, play bandit, or play hero. Sometimes a pre-emptive strike is necessary, sometimes you need to defend yourself. Most likely it was a new player with so much adrenaline thinking about keeping his stuff that he couldn't see straight, it's encounters like that that get your blood pumping, and making bad decisions. you have to keep cool, think and make the decision that seems best at the time.

Unless you hack, cheat or abuse glitches (hiding in walls) anything you do is legit.

Aradia seemed like he needed to "justify" his kill, which indicates his feeling of guilt (which he confessed to anyway).

But still I would say he was more towards being friendly, since he tried to disarm that dude without killing him on the spot.

So Aradia, don't feel bad, there was armed dude, he did not cooperate and so you put him down.

This is FAR from the worst stuff folks do in DayZ.

I hadn't read your post yet and just put up a thread on a very similar encounter on exp. tonight..

Why are people just blind and deaf on experimental servers?

I mean its still Dayz. You dont just get a free ticket because its the fancy exp. server with the new hot update.

Good stuff Aradia.. nice read

I'll make you drop your gun.. The only choice you have in the matter is whether you're breathing or not when it hits the ground. ;)

He doesn't see me, too, he doesn't know where I am.

I think this is a problem a LOT of newer players have in this game, actually.. Most people who play FPS's are accustomed to name tags, clearly marked targets, red/blue dorito's floating over someones head, or some other indication of the target.. DayZ has none of this, so it takes quite a while for people to adjust to the graphics engine and the way targets look.

Furthermore, the eye is attracted to bright colors and movement, AND to make matters worse, the way gun-shots sound in the game currently makes it rather difficult to determine exactly which direction they came from, at times.

So, he probably thought he heard the gunshots from a specific direction and mentally blocked out the possibility of you being where you were..And he was probably newish to the game.

Either way, sounds like a fun interaction.

I had one tonight at NWAF on Experimental, where I was walking up to the ATC, and someone from the veranda fired 2-3 shots from his SKS at me..

I saw him for a brief moment, moving along the veranda, then he ducked back inside... I hugged the wall to the ATC and said, and I quote

"Well, that wasn't very nice.."

Waited a few moments... Nothing.

"You see, if we keep this up.. One of us is going to die... If you talk to me, I might be able to understand that you just panicked and accidentally fired off a few rounds in fear."

Waited another moment.. nothing..

"Okay, the way I see it is, you're trapped, and I have the entire airfield to shoot you from. Did you happen to see what I was carrying on my back? Mosin's are deadly at long range... The question now is whether or not you can hit me enough to kill me before I make it to cover."

Still nothing.. so I got ballsy and walked up the stairs.. he was nowhere to be seen. He took cover and logged out.

:\

To all the people saying this was an unjustified murder. I disagree (and im usualy friendly first, shoot later kinda guy). The guy did not comply and had a gun on him then when he finaly did drop the gun he was still raging which to me says no calm discussion to be had. He dies simply because when hes in that mindset hes a threat, even if he is an oblivious muppet.

Could of used your brains instead of confusing yourself.  Not knowing your mates name so I'll call him Barry for now.

"Hey Barry go stand where that guy was and see if you can see me"

Barry either could see you, if so the other guy just lacked awareness or had very low graphic settings.  Or Barry couldn't see you and  maybe he would of told you why, therefore using it to your advantage next time.
