how to win more gunfights in forests

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am pretty good at Urban warfare but often lose in forest.

i dont know why.

my playstyle is kind of passive. i like to defend a position and wait for my prey instead of engaging after i spot him.

i cant remember how many times i died when i was crouching under a needle-leave tree. i didnt even move a finger, but enemies still found me.......i am sure my body was coverd by leaves......

so please give me some advice on how to win more gunfights in forests.

thanks.

Unfortunately the best way of winning a gunfight in a forest is by turning all of your settings to Very Low and being aggressive. This is how people are seeing you in most cases, by having their Terrain and Object Detail set to the lowest setting. Other than that, there's not a whole lot else you can do. Being passive will most often get you killed, as when you're sitting in a bush waiting for someone, you lose the edge as trees don't actually provide any cover and your vision is impaired.

Most importantly, be aggressive.

Next time you're in the woods, look at something 100 metres away.

See any grass/bushes at ground level?

That grass that you think is hiding you doesn't render for your enemies = you are dead.

You absolutely do NOT want to set your object settings to anything less than normal. It also does not affect seeing other players easily by turning it down.. FYI. Terrain is what makes it easier to spot people hiding in grass, etc. Object detail determines what shows for you at a distance not including terrain details, so if you turn that below normal players will not show up for you beyond 400m and in some cases much closer.

As they said, yeah. Hiding is difficult.

What you need to do is take the higher ground, and hit the deck. Small backpack, low silhouette, good camo.

In forest fighting, whoever is seen first is dead.

So waiting for your enemy is a good thing, just don't try and hide in plain sight.

Yeah, as others have said, it's largely to do with the graphics. Which should not be underestimated or assumed to be a paradigm. It needs to be addressed.

The only thing that helps me is getting the jump on somebody. I attribute 90% of the combat in DayZ to just seeing someone before they see you.

Which doesn't happen a lot for me, given that I like my game to look good. Not DayZ64.

I absolutely hate the fact that people can tweak their graphics settings to be more effective in combat.

Strange, because I've played with all of my settings on minimum for a few days not too long ago and was able to spot people from sniper hill in NEAF all the way to the jail closest to Krasnostav. They just appeared like little smudges of black. It made sniping so much easier.

Youtube research will show you why you do not want to continue.

Windows will not render properly, players, doors, entire buildings.. etc. Anything at great distances is affected.

The only way that has changed is if they just hotfixed it for some reason..

If you play on first person view you will find remaining hiding is much easier.

I've been step on litterally while under a bush and they didn't notice me  at all.

Yup, it definitely looks like shit. There seems to be an extremely low resolution version of every building that's applied after a couple hundred metres, but as far as being able to view players it hasn't affected me. It looks like you're playing Minecraft when you're on sniper hill looking at the airfield.

I once hid so well that another player crouched in front of me (there was a body , four feet away from me, which he was checking) and he didn't notice at all. I remember actually aiming at his head, but I met him earlier and he was a nice guy so I ended up not shooting him. Two pine trees right next to eachother = perfect hiding spot.

Dont lie prone under a pine tree and expect youre safe... Always have solid cover infront and good concealment from behind... Always wear something green above and earth colors for your pants... When your gonna crawl up on someone, drop your backpack... Just leave it somewhere safe(knowing the time for server restarts help) if succesful, you can easily take your opponents back pack, and sort out your stuff in a safer location away from the gun fire. Another set of eyes greatly helps

I'll face my enemy in the woods over the urban environment any day of the week.
I'm quite fond of the forests of Chernarus and altough the terrain could be a lot more detailed, it still has come a good way from Arma2/DayZ. \o/

So, a few things i try to keep in mind when traveling/engaging in the woods:

Before the contact

1. Play on a hardcore server. Seriously. 3rd person view voids any suppressing alltogether with 80% of small squad tactics effective in the game so to me, it takes away about 80% of the fun.

2. Plan your route, wherever you go. Take your time with the map and consider the elevation, probable routes people travel etc. and take that 10 seconds to form a plan for your next mile or two. A short term "what IF" -scenario for the area you are in. I know i have my preferred and tested routes from place to place and i seldom travel outside those. (Unless for new routes ofc)

4. Use the terrain. When alone, travel next to ridge, along a ditch etc. Anything that gives cover from some direction is less terrain to keep an eye on. Always have a tree directly behind you since it's hardest direction to keep an eye on.

5. Slow down. You must be aware of your surroundings, so you must slow down. You only have one pair of eyes, unless you got friends. If so, assign loose roles for the pointman and rear, rest keeping eyes on flanks. It becomes automated after a few evenings with those frieds.

6. Stop often and scan the surroundings. It's the movement that gives you away 90% of the time. That other dude blitzing through those woods will not see you if you stand there still. He can literally pass right by you without noticing. He's got his attention spread too thin trying to keep an eye on everything while running full tilt.

When in contact.

1. Take initiative. Whatever you do, make sure you do it before the enemy. Force the enemy to react to what YOU are doing, not vice versa. That makes YOU control the flow and pace of events, not the enemy.

2. Suppress and move. Use lot of fire. How many times did you die with all those 200 rounds while shooting your gun twice? This is why you have all that ammo so USE IT to live. Rain the enemy with gunfire while steadily moving from cover to cover. He does not see you. If he sees you, you can kill him, that's why we play on hardcore.

3. Gain favorable position using methods above. Then keep moving and putting fire on target. Don't give enemy any time to regroup/form tactics. That's why we have them planned beforehand.

4. Make use of what you have. If you can get to position where you can deny areas to the enemy, use it. It's one less option for them. If you can see a way out of contact, take it, then engage the enemy on YOUR terms in the place of YOUR choosing. Reload always when you have time. Don't let the enemy catch you firing your last bullet.

5. Stay cool. The rush from intense firefight in Dayz is tenfold better than any other game i've played but don't lose your head. Most likely the the other dude is as much as confused so take advantage. Have you noticed how paramedics do everything so calmly and thoughtfully even while treating a critically wounded patient? Try to stay that way even in a firefight. Calm and level headed. Eventually it'll come with experience if nothing else.

Most of all: Find out what works for you. Experiment! You got plenty of time and toons before the release so become that ghost of green mountain, or woodlands ninja. Everything's a lesson!

Take care and i hope to see less nice people dying unnecessary deaths out there!
(And give your enemy a proper challenge instead.) B)

TLDR; Nevermind, this post wasn't for you anyway. :P

Dont ever stay in the same spot..... Fire..Move...Fire...Move.. Flank...Fire...Move...Repeat

I love "Snipers" who stay in the same spot. I give them the illusion I am in the same area.... Then I am behind them. Ez Peezy

Has anyone mentioned the use of WIDE flanking? Even if the enemy is aware of your presence, and then you lose him, or he loses you, the chances are that the next one to get found is the dead one.

All flanking in the wilderness should be as wide as possible.

For the random encounter i tend to follow the textbook pattern:
If you encounter an enemy and are noticed, face the enemy and engage it hard. Force them to dig in and consider their options.

Then backtrack the way you came atleast few hundred meters and be quick about it. Break immediate contact and stay well out of line of sight while flanking. Speed is essential. For flanking, you'd better have a partner to keep contact to the enemy and bind them in place while you flank. Then move straight in to regain contact and engage. If it fails, then you bind and friend flanks. It forces the enemy off your friend, to rotate their setting and buys your friend more time to flank. Always move in and out in straight pattern and long enough distance so enemy cant see you leaving/flanking. =)

The hills should not be underestimated. It's one of the most important aspects of warfare in general and this goes for day-z firefights as well.

Let me illustrate the importance of high ground... think about the ideal direction by which you would engage an enemy. In a perfect situation you would be directly overhead - not only can they not see you but their head represents >50% of the visible target area. Out in the woods a hill will have to suffice but has many of the same advantages, where the head and vital organs are a large percentage of the target area. Conversely from the top of a hill engaging downhill, your head is further from the enemy than any other part of your body. Last I checked, running downhill is also faster so from high elevation you have more exits and can possibly even crest the hill to go out of sight.

I've won and lost open field/woods engagements almost entirely due to elevation differences. The vast majority of my kills happened while shooting downhill and most deaths were rained down from above. Fights I was losing were won because I ran downhill or across the hill to flank and capture the high ground from the enemy. Staying stationary in the woods during a firefight will probably result in your death unless you're working in a team.

If you truly believe you're better than average at pvp you should be playing in hardcore servers where only the skilled and the lucky survive. Third person view isn't as much of a help in the woods of course for a lot of reasons.

At the same time, turning object detail down changes the amount of undergrowth you see, even at close distance. Try it next to some ferns or grass. I was messing with it when trying to make the game look as pretty as I could.

So while what you're saying about distance is true, turning object detail to low will in fact make it easier to spot targets in the forest and low-medium range. Unfortunately.
