If it's an already discussed thing, I apologise, but mobile search is wonky.

This big ass bladed thing. Is it supposed to be this weak? I slapped a zombie multiple times with little to no result.

I mean, it has a 45cm blade. Is it bugged/unfinished/underpowered or it's me not having a clue on how effective a machete could be?

There was a machete in the mod, but you had to force spawn it.

I'm surprised at how bad the machete is in SA. Not only is the graphic ugly as sin, but the damage is an atrocity.

In the mod, 1-2 wacks and thats a wrap. I got into an engagement the other day (won't bore you with the details even though they aren't boring) but I hit an enemy 6-7x with a machete and lost my life as a result.

That machete was either blunt as hell or you should have stopped hitting he guy with the broad side  Maybe it's thanks to the difference in hitpoints between players and zeds if they still have it that way?

How is the range of the machete compared to a hatchet btw.?

I hope they make a walking dead style holster for it, it just looks wrong on your back like that, and they should buff it, same with every melee weapon.

Its been a while since I had the hatchet in my hands so I can't effectively answer your question.

But I'll tell you, this guy was leaking for amber lamps...thought I had it in the bag. With the damage being so low, anybody could have came out of that alive. Very frustrating.

Lesson learned!

All i can say is melee weapons need some buffing (not counting the fire axe of course). Maybe not range wise but with damage. If i beat a zombie senseless for 3 minutes with a baseball bat and the only thing that happens is it falls for a split second then theres a problem. Not complaining i would just like to have my own weapon (for roleplay i guess) and not just walk around with a fire axe because its the only sensible option. I think i ranted enough now.

Made a test with a pristine machete.

The range is basically the one of the fire extinguisher, aka you are better bitting the guy's nose.

Body hits on a zed basically deal no damage (counted 15 before getting knocked unconsious).

Got patched up by a friend and counted 5 solid head hits on a zed before he finally died.

Result: Fists > Machete.

I'm surprised at how bad most of the melee weapons are, and just the melee system in general. Granted, far better than the mod, but it's approaching Elder Scrolls levels of vagueness.

It is kind of a bummer that the machete is so weak, given that the alternative is a massive fire axe.

For that matter, I think there needs to be more than one place in which we stow our melee weapons. Having a machete dug into my shoulder for storage probably isn't the most comfortable place to have it.

I hope devs will introduce proper holsters for machetes, knifes and such.

Damage also will need to be revised, I stabbed some poor fella over 10 times with sks bayonet, before he finaly gave up and died.

For you sir i will link you to this thread.

http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/184730-ask-aggathor-dayz-facts-fictions-answered/

Ask agothor uses the machete on a person and it takes 87, thats correct 87 hits to kill someone with the machete so on a zombie i am guessing it will take quite a few hits.

My machete is just a giant can opener at the moment   but i am sure they will tweak the damage on it eventually.

I also think the 3D object for the machete in-game is not properly scaled and should be longer.

It has about the size of the kitchen knife and should actually be bigger for cutting through bushes in the wilderness, as opposed to smear butter on slices of toast.

I suspect this was a mistake by the devs, when they implemented the item.

I guess I'm the only one that uses the mahete as my primary melee weapon...

"Zombies are too easy. But I'm only going to use the fire axe..."

Use a pistol and machete and head into an empty town and start killing. With the experience I have now, I can dispatch of two zombies at once with the mahete without taking a hit.

Circle and aim for the head. When they are down, smack em twice in the head and they're toast.

While not an overly enjoyable experience (melee combat is like rock em sock em robots atm), it increases the difficulty and prepares me for a day when the infected are the ones to avoid.

Well, I think the whole melee combat will need a major overhaul somewhere along the road.

If a player is hit by a baceball bat or stabbed with a kitchen knife, there should also be way more impact than there is at the moment.

At the moment, stabbing someone in the back who is armed with a gun will result in him/her casually turning around and shooting you in the face.

Beans for everyone here! Melee combat needs to be adressed when they have the opportunity, even if it just means tweaking the damage on some...

Make sure to do that here:

and not on the forums, as it gets more attention there anyway.

Too true. Fair enough, body shots should not be particularly effective on the infected, but a homerun swing for the head ought to be a 30-seconds+ KO, if not a kill. As they are just 'infected', concussion should work much the same as for a human. Depending on how far the physics/ragdoll go it would be nice if you could kneecap or some such and have that affect mobility or just trip.

I'd also like to see 'soft' weapons like the bat wear out through use, could just snap at a crucial moment...

The machete should be similar in effectiveness terms to the above... body shots will take a while but a nice headstrike should be effective. Shame I doubt we'll ever be able to lop limbs with bladed weapons though. Rare holsters (ie leg) which score you an additional 'free' storage slot would be great too.

One question though - does you swing the machete back and forth or is it just a single strike like the axes? Lighter weapons could combo strike to offset lower range and damage. Been such a long while since I picked up a machete I cannot recall if this mechanic is in.

"That's not a knife... That's a knife"
