Ummm iv donated to a few sevrers over the years but they have never demanded something like £10.00 to be honest I would tell your son to look for another one, if thats the only perks he is getting for £10.00 thats pretty rough, There is a group called VforVictory but there servers are down at the moment as there are looking for cheaper providers but they do run 2 types of epoch {cherno/tavina} not 100 percent sure but by all means check them out. hope this helps :)

link to there website {think you need to sign up and ask for whitelisting} http://vforvictory.net/

nah that was for him to be able to build it , it seems he was paying for the building or structures

so he could place them, think my credit card will be staying in my pocket lol

thanks for replying so quickly

He has no right to charge a fee since he doesn't own the rights to the game. He can ask for donations of course. I'd ask him if he already met the lawyers of BIS...

Tell him to find a new server, if the version of the mod has base building in the code then whoever is running the server has no right to be charging money to use a function that is a part of the coding, especially when he has no rights to any part of the game or the mod.

We at FOX company had an Epoch and Overwatch server (both allowed building as a mechanic) and as part of our donation scheme allowed you to purchase a URAL loaded with different types of building materials in to build base items (if you wanted to do it yourself) or if you wanted to donate more you could get a custom built base, which we would build in map editor and then inject directly into the server file, and have it laid out how you wanted. Granted we don't have our servers up right now (as we're getting new providers and working on getting our own version of DayZ called FOXMod made public) but it's something you can still see on our site.

For a group to run a server with a mod on that has base building as part of the mechanic, to then charge simply for the right to do so (or I'm guessing he'll get banned) is just a blatant example of arseholes coming up with ways to rip people off. If you can, try to get the server address and see if there's anyway to report it. Then avoid it like the plague. If you'd like for your lad to be a part of a gaming community that will look after him then get him to give us a shout at http://www.foxcompanygaming.com and we'll happily take him under our wing, while you're at it bring yourself over as well, you're more than welcome :).

It's shit like this that causes people to not trust private servers/mods/communities, when in some cases it's the only thing that keeps certain games alive.

thanks guys for all your input , i have tracked the server and so forth and it appears that the £10 is a donation they ask for , which in turn they will give him a package containing the buildings needed to build quite a big base plus 1 dmr . so it appears at least they are not demanding money , thanks for all the useful sites tho i shall ass them on hopefully he will join one of them instead

Yeah pay to win...the way to go...if i donate something i don't expect anything in exchange. Imo the way you do it is not much different than what the other guy does. Making people pay so they get better stuff instead of playing for it..if it were "pay to keep the server running only donations" i wouldn't see any "ripping off" in it.

They are having him on, we recently got the mod ourselves, found a server that sounded alright. Whithin 5 mins, the admins were flying around us in helcopters and planes. THey showed us how to build bases, pointed out the missions to earn the ingame currency to up keep them. They pretty much built an entire base for us as we were chatting, they gave us an armored car, a helicopter and storage with ammo and guns in. Then they left us to it, just told us to give them a shout for any assistance we may need and tell them when we are ready to do some missions with them. Never asked for a penny. Unfortunatly it seems that server has shut down though at the moment sadly, so we have gone in another now similar sounding to it. Dont part with a penny no way.

It can be seen as pay to win yes, but what the other guy seemed to be doing (before op saw for himself and made his own informed judgment) was asking for money just to use a functionality of the game. We don't demand that anyone pays anything, in fact most people just use the donate button instead and ask for nothing, but the offer is there for people that feel the need for an incentive.  We don't just offer in game stuff, we sell FOX Company themed tshirts, hoodies, phone covers http://www.foxcompanygaming.com/foxmerch, our leader makes leather survival gear like pouches and holders for survival kits as well as belts and wrist cuffs (really good workmanship too) http://www.foxworkshop.co.uk/. All the proceeds of which go into server costs and keeping the main website going.

While I agree "pay to win" is a 'cheap' way of getting donations from people, it's far from the only way of getting them. It's just some people like the option to donate that way.

Hi Bullet, your query isn't relevant to DayZ and its forums.  It might be better to address it to Arma's forums.

Personally, from what I've seen, the admins of some private servers do charge for items but public DayZ mod servers don't.  Different game, different provider.  Does that make sense?  If not, feel free to ask for further information.

Hello there,

as Sula pointed out before me, it seems to have happened on a private server, as it's against the server hosting rules on public hive / Vanilla DayZ Mod. Sadly there's nothing we can do about it, but it definitely is bad practice and forbidden on these forums.

10) Transactions:

You may not under any circumstances sell or buy in game items for real world money, the same goes for selling access to an Official or Non official Server, If you choose to do so on a Privately hosted server not connected to Hive you must advertise that else where.

Hello there

If one wants to donate any amount to a server then IMHo that is fine.

If one is asked to donate or is given an opportunity to pay for ingame items, to me, it is very poor form.

I suggest your son look for a new server.

Rgds

Apparently, you were referring to DayZ mod servers (private ones).  My apologies, it wasn't clear from your post.  I think what we are clear on is that private servers shouldn't be charging and doing so via these forums is not allowed, it's against the rules.

My advice would be to steer your son away from those services, if you can.

Wait so is a server having "donating perks" looked down upon? Or is this a separate case of "if you wanna play you gotta pay!"

He should never pay to play on a server.  EVER.  There are tons of free servers available with options like this.  Donations are fine...when they are voluntary.
