SentencedToBurn 39 Posted March 31, 2014 I dont often play on hardcore, I used to keep this character when I just wanted to muck around and not risk getting my regular character killed. So during my random muck around sessions I ended up building up a decently geared guy with a full backpack and vest of food, ammo and other bits and pieces. So in the last few days I kept jumping on to highly populated hardcore servers in attempt to establish some human contact. First I came across a newspawn who was very apprehensive at first, once I gave him some food and drink, he seemed cool so I gave him a 1911 with a clip and some amo, and a holdster. And what do you know the guy was cool, didnt shoot me for my mosin and my gear, we looted a few towns until I had to head off. Today another similar situation - came across a dude (Dr C.. something? I'm not good with names) at Berezino fighting off the zombies, although he did have a mosin I yelled out friendly, and again the dude was cool. Turns out he only had two rounds so I gave him some ammo, food and whatever else. Then we ended up looting the airfield and the new town up north. I know many of you have been betrayed many times, have given up and now only KOS, but being a rehabilitated bandit myself I feel that this type of gameplay is much more satisfying. This isn't an anti KOS rant btw, without people shooting on site these interactions wouldn't have been as intense, if everyone was friendly then there is no risk approaching anyone. So if you do come across a well-geared player and you always either run or KOS, remember that there is another option - you can talk to them.
zecele 211 Posted March 31, 2014 I play as a hero character. I hang around Solnichy helping fresh spawns and protecting them from bandits etc. If i see an armed player ill sneak up on him tell him to lower his weapon, ask if he wants to trade anything and we part ways. There is a lot more risk as a hero character but its far more enjoyable. If any new spawns try to punch me then they meet my axe, shotgun, pistol.
Brethren Develain 4 Posted March 31, 2014 It is a rare thing that I give a loaded weapon to a stranger but I did yesterday and lived to tell the tale. I was looting the NEAF and was walking in the barracks as he was walking out... we literally walked right into each other. He yelled FRIENDLY and immediately put his hands in the air, stepped back and said that he had looted the whole airfield and that he was unarmed. My friend was hiding in the bushes a little ways away providing overwatch. We were there to try and scrounge up a nice army packpack for my friend or another stripper clip for my SKS. He ended up giving me about 40 rounds of SKS ammo and a stripper clip so I gave him a FNX with a clip and some ammo. We both walked away with something we needed and added each other on steam.P.S. At least when I try to give people guns I always have a friend watching my back ;)
odin_lowe 3686 Posted March 31, 2014 (edited) I play pretty much like Zecele play. What you shared about your experiences, I experienced it too and feel lucky about it. I mean, I'm grateful because it's a very rewarding social interaction. Establish trust between strangers is something vital to the experience of DayZ in my opinion. It's very gratifying. :beans: B) Edit: Met these two strangers at the Svetlojarsk PD. We shared ammo and guns, and ended playing together for 3 hours. TheHuntsMan87 194 Posted March 31, 2014 Its one of those questions that truly have no answer....I personally try and be as friendly as possible and give them the benefit of the doubt when it comes to meeting people...If they seem nervous i try and help them out as quick as possible then let them get on there way
Irish. 4886 Posted March 31, 2014 This is a game and all.. but would you in real life hand a loaded gun to someone you had no idea about? Or would you be more inclined to get to know them to some degree before arming them? I personally would choose the later in almost every situation. I do the same in game. Unless I could just give zero fucks, then I dont mind arming everyone around me to see what happens ;)

hutchthefreaker 49 Posted March 31, 2014 When I play as a hero I frequently give out guns. Rarely to new spawns though, as that seems to always end with a fresh hole in my face. But anybody with a kids backpack who is past that first stage of desperation where they have no food is fair game. Seems to be around 50/50 that either you make a friend or get shot. This is a game and all.. but would you in real life hand a loaded gun to someone you had no idea about? Or would you be more inclined to get to know them to some degree before arming them? Some people want to watch the world burn, but some of us would rather pass out the matches and gasoline!
Facetentacles 92 Posted March 31, 2014 The other night my fiancé was playing and had just respawned after I unknowingly led her to a death trap (that I miraculously survived. I'm a terrible person) and some guy with an m4 started yelling at her to show him some tits. After she started talking on VoIP he realized she was actually a girl and not just playing one and he felt terrible and gave her a bunch of food lol

thelonewarrior 886 Posted April 1, 2014 (edited) Well I ran into about 5 people who were chatting in direct by the road in berezino and we went to rifty and we all mysteriously starting dying until shots were fired at us and one of the group starting shooting tooI managed to get a mosin from a body with 5 roundsWe killed the guy that betrayed us and made a break for it, the sniper was terrible but managed to kill one of us leaving me and 2 other Guys leftServer restarted and we went back in, I had 2 bullets left and they were low on ammo tooWe went to north east airfield and all got killed by my first hacker encounter But we all had guns that were loaded, depends on the person and it just so happened these guys were alright guys, they were also the two best geared members of the group ironically Edited April 1, 2014 by Regulator Lone Warrior
hannibaldaplaya 1095 Posted April 1, 2014 I only do this with random people I meet who go through the process of adding me on Steam or Skype. That way, the chance of betrayal drops, drastically. It shows that you want to be friends. Just my policy.
VoidingNixx 39 Posted April 1, 2014 (edited) I do not believe you can ever trust a stranger with a gun. They have that gun for a reason. Now, don't misunderstand, I think you can talk to them, trade, be friendly, but I would never fully trust them. I'd always be expecting them to shoot at any time and be ready to shoot back. The only time I think I would come close to trusting someone, is if I know they could've gunned me down in the back and they decided to talk to me first without a weapon pointed at me... but I think I'd still be ready to fire. DeatHTaX 1217 Posted April 1, 2014 Sorry but for me, it's all about survival. Would you keep loaning people money if time after time they never paid you back? Eventually you would just stop lending out money. This is essentially the same concept I apply to meeting random people in this game, and "trusting" people with guns

This is essentially the same concept I apply to meeting random people in this game, and "trusting" people with gunsYeah nah I hear that, and in RL I would definitely take a similar approach to what you are suggesting. In DayZ however it seems that many have never even considered the "communication" aspect of the game. Dont get me wrong, i'm far from a "we're all children of mother nature" type of person, in fact - fuck hippies and their peaceful ways. But as an exception, less mindless violence in DayZ (for me anyway) made for a much better experience.
chickenmcfuggits 49 Posted April 1, 2014 No, in fact I don't trust anyone enough to even trade or cooperate. Not that I'm a bandit, I just avoid other players until I get geared enough to go to one of the cities and find a nice gunfight to jump in. In fact, I've got an ammo box full of 5.56, an M4, a .357 with 2 speedloaders and a sweet ass FNX with a red dot sight and a pistol supressor (unfortunately I haven't found a mag for it though), so I might just have to make my way to the south coast now. AzrailCross 48 Posted April 1, 2014 (edited) Perhaps one of the worst encounters of 'trust' I've had so might have been my own doing or .. just a good example of a first encounter with two well armed people meeting. All started with a rare occurrence that began with having one of my m4 clips and a pistol clip both disappear from my inventory after a server restart; (had just reloaded while yellow chained I think, and something screwy happen I guess, I'm not even positive.) Either way I have my current m4 clip and one spare and my FNX clip and one spare so it's not like I'm remotely disarmed. But still I make the risky call of heading toward town and check the sign to make 100% sure where I am, and end up deciding to head toward the southwest air-force base rather than the one further north; figure the server just reset so either I'm going to see an army log in, or nobody: and can get there more quickly than anywhere else I figure -if- I'm cautious all will be fine. Just gotta play it smart, get in - find a M4 mag maybe a pistol mag and get out and with some real luck find something else worth keeping though I can't imagine what, already have everything I could imagine I'd want to carry. Awhile later, I'm in the treeline near at the west side of the AFB and look in my inventory; realize how stupid an idea it is to risk all that I have over two clips I can find over time given I couldn't be any more well equip, my heart is starting to pound; such an open area and one good sniper shot and I'm down, four other people are on the playerlist and two of them are clearly a team. (Thaiarmy>Name for both of them I think) So against my better judgement I run through the AFB fence and crouch in some brush and all of a sudden I hear a groan, start to think I aggro'd a zombie but I keep my M4 up and raise the optics, only to see the zombie heading toward me at first and then bolted to his right toward the military building; next thing I see is a guy sprinting out and I remain crouched, watching him flee toward the 3 Barracks, now I'm really nervous, I think for a moment I should just leave: but instead start crouch-running behind the buildings since I know exactly where he's going, I duck in behind the one I know he's in because at this point - he's unloading M4 rounds into the zombies himself; and I make the call to go on voice "You friendly?" when the firing stops ... "YOU FRIENDLY!" and I hear him go 'what?' ... "OH OH YES FRiENDLY FRIENDLY" .. convincingly, just like he doesn't fully comprehend what I'd asked.. same moment I see a zombie aggro me and start filling it and the rest of them with holes and I hear him just shouting "OH GOD FRiENDLY FRIENDLY!" "FRIENDLY PLEASE STOP SHOOTING FRIENDLY!" ... Well in the end he pops out of the Barracks and I take out a zombie near him, keep my gun up and on him 'just in case' only to hear him ask "What's your name" .. so I reply and ask his, he replies "Thai I'm thai" and then I know I'm probably in trouble, since I'm almost positive he has a friend around, but he doesn't say anything for a moment, we've both got our weapons up pointing at each other, I'll lower mine a moment, he'll lower his, then raise his back up and I'll raise mine back up.. clearly we're both uncertain of each other, then puts his weapon anyway and raises his hand in a wave, so I lower my weapon to and for a few moments things are fine. I start to speak when I see him draw his weapon again - and naturally so do I - right at the same time: then it happen, he shot a zombie charging him and he makes a quick turn toward me so I raise my weapon again pointing toward him and shoots me once in the chest without hesitation; my camo vest was ruined - I literally was in shock but I instantly unloaded around 22 rounds into him from hip to head in a split second... Walk up to his bleeding body and murmur "Why man, why'd you have to shoot?" and check his pulse, faint, so I try to start to bandage him, have more than enough morphine and bandages and epi to save him but it was already to late, by the time I got bandages out he was dead and gone and I knew I had to get out before the other Thaiarmy guy shows up. So I quickly grabs some of his 5.56MM rounds and naturally one of his 40 round clips and ditch without even caring to loot anything more or the base. Was just 'really' at the end, 'why' .. just 'why' .. did he accidentally shoot? Was he just trying to get me to go unconscience to rob me and let me live? Did he think the one shot would kill me or did he mean to do more but I responded to quickly? Don't know, and I suppose I don't care. I don't trust anyone enough to let them get away with shooting me once. I've only had one 'better' experience and that was as a fresh spawn I was being chased by a horde of zombies and a group of 4 took out the zombie and gave me a gun and we started looting together, but that's just me being trustworthy so I can't say I have any experience of someone else being armed and NOT trying to kill me yet :| Edited April 1, 2014 by AzrailCross
