we need to talk about the walkie talkies

Recommended Posts

I'm over 300 hours on the game now and I've only found approx. 2 walkie talkies, and I search a lot of different areas for things.

Where do you even find these things?

Firestations usually have some, even if they've been looted and picked over a few times ;P

Instead of Direct Chat, you select the frequency you chose on the walkie itself, and press the same you bound to talk.

You can also send a typed message over the radio channel as well, not just voice.

I like the idea, but if you're talking quiet, people from 25m away shouldn't be able to hear you

That all depends entirely on how loud you are talking.

If you are talking loudly in the complete quiet of chenarus yea 25m you might be heard.

Hai, so desu ne!! When you go passed the effective range, the text is missing some letters to simulate static or loss of frequency. It's pretty nice and I like that feature. Walkies are great!

How is that a bad idea ?

If you are talking in your mic you should be talking in game.

Why should you be able to communicate with friends in game talking tactics while remaining silent in game.

What if a cat is meowing or a dog barking in the background? What if a kid has a fan blowing on his mic? What if his mom comes slamming on his door? What if there's a party going on in the background? What if someone just has a really bad microphone and it causes constant static? What if someone just doesn't have a mic?

As to "why should you be able to communicate with friends in game talking tactics while remaining silent in game"

Because it's a fucking game, for chrissakes.. I want to play with friends and use teamwork to accomplish goals. If you're so hard up for a real life survival experience, go purchase a fire-arm and take a trip to Montana and hunt a fucking mountain cat.

1. You can adjust how sensitive your mic is.

2. No you should not be able to have a huge advantage over other players in the game  without any consequence.

If you talk in game then you should by all means be heard.

1. A dog generally barks louder than a person talks in their normal speaking voice. Mic static can't be controlled by sensitivity.. And, not everyone has/uses a mic.. So that blows your point out of the water. Any other arguments to the contrary? I'd love to hear you rationalize these away.

2. How do I have an advantage over other players, exactly? Please explain to me how free VOIP programs which ANYONE can download, give me a "huge advantage"? Furthermore, wouldn't it be a huge advantage for other people if they simply disconnected their mic in your scenario? By your logic, since I have a I5 processor, I am at a huge disadvantage versus someone with an I7 processor.. because they have hardware which isn't included in the game in order to give them an advantage in the game.. Better force everyone to play at 15 FPS, just to make it fair for everyone, right?

Do you even think about some of the things you suggest? Do you ever challenge your own beliefs, or do you just latch on to some unrealistic idea and ride that bitch right into the absurd?

1. So kick your dog out of the room when you play ? as far as some people not having mics thats fine that means they would never talk anyway so they gain no advantage or disadvantage.

2. You gain an advantage by being able to talk strategy, talk about problem solving in game while never speaking a word. Players who use in game voice are at a disadvantage since they would be heard by other players. Sure they could also download teamspeak but they choose not to so they can speak to strangers.

The idea is not unrealistic its the opposite if you speak you should be heard in game. It's really that simple. If you are communicating to someone in game the game should mirror your voice into direct chat automatically.

1. Not everyone has that option.. And if someone doesn't have a mic that means they can speak without being heard.. Obviously this is an advantage in a tense situation.. Where as the person who has a hot mic and has background noise would be automatically giving their position away by something that's happening outside of the game.

2. I'm speaking to people out of the game about things in the game.. There's really no way you can control that.. I could simply assign a different sound device or disable DayZ VOIP all together, then I could still talk in teamspeak to my friends. There's no fucking way you can stop that, and EVERYONE HAS ACCESS TO IT, SO THERE IS NO ADVANTAGE. It's not my fault if you do not have friends or do not use teamspeak to talk with your friends. If you have a bad PC, it's YOUR problem, not mine.. If you have no mic, it's YOUR problem, not mine. If you choose not to use TS/Vent/Mumble, it's YOUR problem, not mine. Furthermore, there are a lot of disadvantages to having a VOIP program running while you're playing the game, as disorganized/undisciplined players are going to be more distracted by it than they are going to gain any advantage/valuable info.

1. Who cares if they can speak without being heard, problem is speaking via the internet to a person who is in game and communicating orders or tactics to help you out.

2. This is not about having a bad pc or having a hardware advantage I promote people have better specs to get an advantage in game. This is about curbing or at the very least leveling out side of the game communication systems so they can still be used but now have a small drawback that encourages in game talk use.

It honestly wouldn't be a big deal.

1. What the hell are you talking about?

2. Why would you want to curb out-of-game communications? People can still use in-game VOIP... Having teamspeak doesn't discourage people to use in-game VOIP.

And yes, in all honesty, it would be a big deal because as I said, if you force my mic to stay opened at all times it would be a complete cluster-fuck and I would just disable in-game voip and still use teamspeak.. so your plan would backfire.

All rocket has to do is disable push to talk and make it whenever you make noise on your mic it automatically talks in direct chat.

So your teamspeak and mumble conversations are mirrored in game.

Unlike the concept of somehow banning TS Mumble Vent Skype w/e, this is actually doable.

Honestly, I'd be for adding this as a server-side option. Don't force it on everyone, but allow it to be a thing.

Also, this isn't completely unheard of. I know at least one game that has this on by default: Intruder. You /can/ turn it off, but a lot of people leave it on, either out of ignorance or immersiveness.

Worth noting: Even this wouldn't be fully 'realistic'; I'm pretty sure any headset that costs more than $20 has a mic mute switch on it somewhere.

I would love this merely because I know I would stumble on some kid skyping with his buddy about some dumb thing that happened at class.

OR

Hopefully stumble on some dude beating off and then scare him just as he is about to cum totally ruing his fun.

Take your walkie to green mountie.

I did this the other day because I was curious but was not able to pick up any transmission on any frequency even within 50 meters from the tower.

Battery was charged, radio was on and damage state was worn is I feel I should have picked it up? Or is the transmission maybe not continuous? I have tried for about 15 minutes.

Grose...aaaand moving right along... Chat programs will never be disabled by game so the whole subject is moot.

I have tried the walkies with a few people and they seem as random as direct. Sometimes people can hear, other times there is nothing. In game voip in the arma series is well known for being decidedly dodgy so without things like TS/Mumble/Skype etc..it would be a pretty shitty interactive experience for quite a few players.

ACRE is fantastic and adds a ton to the experience.

Well, is that what you think people are up to when they are playing in game, or are you drawing from your own personal experiences.

How embarrassing, whatever the reason your comment is quite revealing.

Please desist from such vulgarities.

Catching someone legitimately beating off in DayZ would probably scar me mentally for a few days...

EDIT: Wait what can we not talk about that?

EDIT2:

4) Offensive Content:

Material that is sexually or otherwise obscene, racist, or otherwise overly discriminatory is not permitted on these forums. This includes user pictures. Use common sense. We want to show this website to our mums.

Welp I guess I should have known. Welcome to the DayZ forums where entire threads of brutal massacres are ok but no masturbation jokes. Hey mom look at all these innocent people I murdered!

Impossible. . I can connect my Microphone to a separate sound device, then DayZ can't control it... So what would that do? Make everyone who uses out-of-game VOIP cheaters? I'm sorry, but that's completely ridiculous.

Walkie talkies are fairly much useless in this game which is a touch sad,  I do wonder why they are so hard to find, as research suggests that dropping a radio while it's on and tuned allows you to talk and the sound comes in the same radius as voice chat from the radio.  The other use as someone pointed out is giving one to a person you meet in game to allow com's.

OBV DayZ should be logged in via facebook and have all access to your webcam that no one can talk in same household without other players notice.

What you planning here is nonsense, does privacy say you guys anything?

I think blocking third party communication software would be impossible. If it were I can just use Skype on my phone.

Having the mic always on is a plausible option, however some people would have privacy issues with it, also you could still text chat with your friends, or even unplug your mic and skype them on your phone.

There is no fix, its something we all have to accept.
