Does Dayz Standalone have the worst zombies in any game ?

Recommended Posts

I was playing earlier for the first time in quite a while and it struck me while playing.

I immediately though holy crap this games implementation of zombies is horrendous .

Just as I said that one of those pesky respawning zombies spawned about 20 m in front of me and without me moving or the zombie looking in my direction it just charged at me.

After dispatching it with my axe the zombies constantly came one after another all of them I was able to see spawn in as if teleported by god himself.

One has to ask has any game done zombies worse than Dayz ?

Nope, you just have to be better at not making yourself noticed. Respawning zombies know your location per default. Hence instead of say.. Killing one with a gun, go with the stealth method of using an fireaxe. I have never ever since patch had problems with being overrun by zombies.

Probably in some unreleased indie title, I'm sure. Nothing released though. Some people have standards and when they see something as major as AI running through walls they go "ehhhh, I guess we should fix that sooner rather than later".

I was in the middle of the woods and was by no means overrun.

I merely killed the 2 that came at a time, crouched and waited 5-10 seconds and could see brand new zombies spawn with all of their full jankyness.

How can you people tell? SA isn't even released yet!

So far the Zeds have been shit for 4 months now. The only change so far is that now they're faster, hate going downhill, and respawn in a dumb way.

4 months and they've only managed to make zombies worse. Right now they're janky, suicidal, super humans with x-ray vision, super speed, ESP, the ability to phase shift through solids and instantly reincarnate while maintaining their memory. Amusingly though, they're still not even remotely a threat.

The funniest thing though, is that some people in this playerbase STILL try to defend the current implementation. I guess we just need fanboy hard enough and they'll start working as intended, right?

also: I like your signature. I wish more people realized that criticism is both cathartic and outright REQUIRED in an alpha/beta test, Blind acceptance will only make the finished product worse.

I'm glad that they don't focus  on zombies. Because they don't have a vital role in this game, like clothes have. We need more coats, hats and pants, fixing the zombies should not have priority because they are not important in this game. As you can see the devs clearly knows that.

What if he is actually right, it's not only the spawns, the zombies are so fucking robotic, it doesn't even feel satistifying to kill 20 of them, and this will NEVER be fixed because of the ARMA engine, Rocket&his team are really fucking lazy and don't even bother making more than two types of different zombies faces with just different clothes.

He IS right. These are the worst zombies in any videogame, and not in the good meaning of it.

Welcome to Alpha... Yes, the zombies suck. They'll get better.

I've seen way worse.

I've seen masses of 'em spawn right in front of you. Path finding entailing a straight line. Client side Z (so you had to remember which ones are "yours").

The horrors...

The Dead Linger has worst.

Actually, no, DayZ SA has worst. They hit you from 10m away and slide through walls while using ESP to know your position, no matter what.

I still don't understand why the issue of zombies glitching through walls wasn't given absolute priority...

But it's ok, because we have some new hats.

It is amazing to me the degree to which people cannot manage their expectations or honestly gauge what weight their opinions should carry.

Worst zombies?  No.

Worst community?  Very possibly.

Some of the worst, if not the worst, at this stage of development. They've been tweaked this latest patch to get to threat levels, which obviously accomplished that, but still have work to be done here. That's why they have a team working on them specifically going forward. It's early....

I am really straining my memory in finding one. Definitely not one of the modern titles. I'm looking for something from the 90's.

Anyway, I agree that zombies should be a priority, something on par with implementing physics - which might be somehow preventing on focusing strictly on zombie pathfinding, but I cannot confirm that in any way. Nonetheless, hunting should be a much much less important issue right now, way below fixing the zombies.

But hey, IMO they did a great step in the right direction by relocating resources to optimise the netcode and desync - although with mediocre results so far.

As for mockery of adding hats, clothes, guns - this isn't done by the coders. All those assets are developed by 3D artists with enough product knowledge to create a config file for a given item. They just create a model of a new pistol, take the config from FNX45, change values, add to loot tables and done. Brand new gun without any coding skills needed. So it's actually good that the artistic team adds new content instead of sitting on their asses.

Comparing any (finished) game to an Alpha is not quite fair in my opinion, because (as it was announced like 100 times) that nearly everything about the Zs is a placeholder at the moment....and in comparable (finished) games they won't change much...

So...while I don't know if they are the worst Zombies of all Alphas of all zombie games, the placeholder that is current there is worse than any zombie in other games that I've played. But again: I really think they will get better, so ranting here about a placeholder is quite useless imho...

While you are right with your description of the Zs I have to add some things:

"4 months and they only got worse" : Well, I hate to say this, but that's the nature of an Alpha. Features (like the respawning) get added, even if they are only raw prototypes, to see if they work, cause bugs together with other things etc. so that it can be tweaked before it is developed further...

I haven't seen many that defend the current implementation in a way that they say: "These Zombies are perfect, keep them exactly that way."

I have only seen people ranting and crying, some making suggestions and giving fededback and some answering to the ranting and crying ones to shut up and live with the fact that the Zs that are in the game are not finished by far.

But yes, blind acceptance and praising of an unfinished part of the game (which the Zs clearly are) is as wrong as useless ranting (there is a difference between Ranting, whining, complaining and critizising) or asking if these Placeholders are the worst Zombies in the history of computer games...just my opinion.

But it's ok, because we have some new hats.

First, read my signature and think about it for a moment.

And now I'll just quote some reddit-posts from rocket:

Wool coats + new weapons do not involve new functionality. They are often configured directly by artists, not even requiring a designers input.

As the game is not finished, different tasks take different amounts of time. We are not in the rebalancing stage at all, so there is no buffing and debuffing going on.

We have recently implemented entirely new animations for zombies movement, as well as implementing a placeholder zombie spawn mechanic. The new AI collision and pathfinding system is underway, but takes longer than the other tasks.

We have prioritized redoing:

  • Zombie and Animal AI pathfinding/collision

  • Player controls (mouse acceleration bugs)

  • Loot Respawn

  • Zombie Respawn

  • Desync/lag

  • Excessive bandwidth utilization (non-guaranteed updates)

  • Client performance due to need for proxy object occlusion culling/lodding methods needed.

I must remind people this implementation is place-holder only, in the strongest sense of that term. Expect the zombie spawning, collision, and behavior to be fully up for revision as an entirely new separete team is currently looking at this.

So yeah....nonsense rants are nonsense.
