Roaming the map...

Recommended Posts

I went exploring for the heck of it today and pushed as far north as I could - just to see what was past the water tower, north of NW airfield, and how the developers 'ended' the map on that side.  Almost a bit surreal - afraid to roam the barren wasteland for fear the server will crash and my equipped character will be tossed into the abyss!  Anyone spent any time figuring out how far this wasteland is explorable and how its 'ended'?  What other places have you roamed that are on the fringes of the map?

What I understood the engine will just keep producing the same landscape over and over in a loop, so you'd never reach the end nor would you really be covering any distance.

..that is the edge of the map. You do not want to venture further or you will die. Our world is in fact flat.

That's what I feared, and then said screw it and ran a good ways in, then lost my nerve and high tailed it out of there!  :)

Ah yes, the Debug zone. That is the entrance and the exit, but if you enter it via a bug there is no way out.

Might just have to take one for the team and explore this via video capture.  Will likely be rather boring considering.  Maybe I'll walk some zeds up that way, a long trek, and have them explore it with me.  What happens when they 'cross the line'?  Yes, think I'll do this for giggles...on my next respawn.  :)

There are tales of a great city that lies across the waste land to the north east. A city of the living. Where food is prepared by chiefs and guns of every sort can be purchased. Rooms with beds and toilets that flush. The streets are clean and the women beautiful. This is the tale I have heard.

You are going to be very disappointed if you want to explore it on Standalone.

Get yourself a helicopter in the ARMA 2 Armory or the Editor and fly for a while heading northwest. You will find a huge nothing and will be bored after half a minute.

It really is only debug plains and there's absolutely nothing there.

It is an exciting place, take a stroll and see how far you can go.

Story tells of a player who went insane and has built a camp out there, those who arrive, survive.

lol, don't know what of this story is true but it's a good read:

...I ran west along the road for an hour until i had noticed that the land scape was now duplicating itself. Instead of dull plain landscape, they had a duplicated landscape. To the right (north) I would see a small clearing with shrubbery that has a shed with a fence around it. To the left is a trail that heads to the mountain. I kept going until I ran past the same shed three times and by then I got curious. I wondered if It was acutally duplicating the landscape or I was just being teleported back to a certain spot and I was just running in an endless loop.

I decided to drop an almost empty ammo clip on the road to see if I would pass it. After passing the same shed for the fifth time, I never found it, so reconfirmed my theory that that it was a replicating landscape. I had ran past the same shed for a total of twelve times while watching the tv and I beginning to contemplate if I should keep going for another three times or just head towards the North West Airfield but as I ran past the shed on the thirteenth time, I noticed there was scarecrow standing near the shed...
