Another crumb-off yammering about net code. Probably don't know jack about it either.

You obviously don't if you're not yammering about it.

A "good base to start with"....i assume you mean with good base that it has not, the 3 points you mentioned afterwards?

1) Networking:

- This game has some of the worst netcode I've ever experienced. The entire game is based around multiplayer yet it's almost unplayable in that aspect.

- I don't think I've ever been in a gun fight where there wasn't some sort of desync/teleport lag.

- It's very common to see other players walk through walls.

- Inventory desync and ground item desync is awful.

- Server performance is abysmal, resulting in hourly server restarts for performance issues.

Maybe because it is not optimized in any way? You say, you understand that it's an alpha, but you disprove yourself with these words. I don't wanna say it's a good code or that it works flawless (and I'm pretty sure it will never be as smooth as a FPS in that way) because I haven't seen it, but I am pretty sure that there's alot of optimization that can be done.

At least inventory desync is gone for sure ;) And the server restarts...well...that's the mod you are speaking about. But yeah, the ArmA engine is neither a MMORPG, nor does it has mapchanges where it can do its destructor work. At the moment, these restarts are for respawning Zs and Loot (how didn't ya know that? o.O), but I'm sure the servers will have to be restarted in the future as well (if they don't get a brilliant way for cleaning up the map objects) at least once a day.

2) Client Performance:

- Okay sure it's true client side performance optimizations usually occur in beta however this is mostly never the case for bohemia games.

- Giant performance loss when looking into cities (probably the most common). This issue has existed since the first Arma and still exists even in Arma 3. (Engine limitation?)

- Overall terrible hardware utilization and outdated rendering (DirectX9)

Okay sure it's true client side performance optimizations usually occur in beta

So, why rant here & now?

3) Controls:

- This is basically self explanatory to most players. Mouse controls for this game are horrible mostly from using an outdated engine base.

- Object collision is a joke.

Wel...if there weren't 50 threads with ~ 5000000 posts about negative mouse acceleratiopn i'd care to comment. But really, I can't talk about that topic anymore, just search one of the threadfs about it.

Yes its not good. No, i still dont find it gamebreaking. Yes, they are aware of it and are changing it but will never remove it afaik. Yes, that hurts but w/e.

Object collision is as well is a known issue and a wip....again, not defending, just saying what was said about it.

So, here, take this as a present:

Once again someone who cannot read properly and resorts to 'alpha' excuses. I already answered why alpha is not an excuse for said reasons in my thread.

Once again someone who cannot read properly and resorts to 'alpha' excuses. I already answered why alpha is not an excuse for said reasons in my thread.

wtf? I don't make excuses, i tried to explain why these things are the way they are at the moment in my opinion.

And I read the whole thread (mostley because it's funny, thanks to highlander, caboose and the others),a nd the only thing you said "why alpha is not an excuse for said reasons in my thread" was:

It's an alpha... that is correct however an 'alpha' (especially one being sold) should have a good base to start with.

And now read the first line of my post again:

A "good base to start with"....i assume you mean with good base that it has not, the 3 points you mentioned afterwards?

So...if I'm mistaken, sry, but please show me in that case, where else you explained why Alpha is not an excuse...?

Edit: Or...you didn't read my post an just looked at the Alf picture?^^

So my only question is why would anyone develop a game on such a terrible architecture if they weren't doing it for a cash grab.

my only question is  Do you complain about every game you dont like ?

Yes it is alpha, but what worries me, is they aren't fixing well known bugs like zombies walking through walls, being at the top of the list.

How hard can this be, and how long would it take. In unity it's as simple as adding a collider to zombie, and that's pretty much it, 1 second job. From looks of it, this game seems to be made by cryengine, not too familiar with it, but surely it can't be much different.

In short yes we all know its alpha, and the game is very playable, but what is taking so long to fix things.

Ouch.

In unity most things are easy...but I went over this like 10 times now in different threads, I don't care anymore to explain the pros and cons of unity and why, in my opinion, unity would not have been good for DayZ. (apart from the issue that Bohemia owns (and made) an engine (the ArmA engine...), so I guess, they would not buy another one/allow a game produced by them that doesn't use their own engine...and yes, DayZ still belongs to BI)

Short story: DayZ is based on the ArmA 2.5 Helicopter engine, but was nearly rebuilt from scratch for DayZ, to remove limitations and make it possible to expand it in ways that the ArmA engine would not been able to handle.

And if you write your own game engine (not only graphics engine or physics engine but game engine) a lot of things that are so easy with an out-of-the-box engine like unity can be very hard. That's the price you have to pay if you want something different that you can expand beyond the limits of an bought engine.

To shorten this up for you, here's what hicks (the producer of dayZ) saif about the stages of development:

  • DayZ Early Access Alpha: Feature development, during which the vast majority of major bugs are created/occur.
  • DayZ Early Access Beta: Content development, during which the "meat on the bones" is added to the title, alongside the beginnings of major bug fixing surrounding issues created during the feature development of alpha.
  • DayZ Early Access RC (Final Beta stages): Bug Fix, optimization, and balancing. During which the stone is polished, until the DayZ dev team feels the title is ready to go live.

So...yeah. It WILL take long to fix some things, since fixing things is NOT the top priority in an Alpha (expect for things that make it unplayable like the memory leak or somethign that would cause a constant CTD etc.), it is not inessential, but the top priority is developing core mechanics.

Edit: BAH. I hate having the last post on a site. People NEVER read them -.-

For the record: I tried to be helpflul and nice. 2 times in a row. Next post to the OP if he still ignores what I say is trolling again.

SINCE WHEN?! do you even know what alpha means? omfg this makes me furious!

i honestly thought that it played MUCH BETTER than i expected after all those warnings i read! they basicly said that "this game barely works, and doesn't have much in it yet" so wtf? you missed that or what?

Complaining about an Aplha Game is like asking a paraplegic why his legs arent working.

Just my 2 cents <_<

I agree with OP, actually.

They knew the game was hardly playable, but instead of waiting they shoved it out into the market.

The only reason it's doing so well on sales is because the concept. It's what everyone has ever wanted. Actually, Day Z is standing proof that if Developers would get out of the "FPS is best" comfort zone, they can make a lot of money on ideas. Sadly, the execution is so far pretty bad. I still love the game and will continue to play it. But OP is right. Screaming "ALPHA" at these sorts of people doesn't make them any less correct.

The fact that they hyped the game for a whole year and released it right before christmas (oh wait, there was a warning, yeah, but who gives a fuck?) proves that they wanted to make money. I don't blame the team for that, to me it was more like a BI decision, a bad move if you ask me.. but anyway we have the broken alpha and we can only wait and put our hopes on the team.

DayZ SA was released as early access alpha, because of constant whining that it is not released yet and begging for it. The lead developer said himself answered if someone should buy the DayZ SA early Access Alpha:

For the current game? No

For the price? No (it will stay this price for some time)

To see the game? No (you can watch streams)

To participate in development? Possibly

So...yeah....what else do you want?

Edit:

Really? What else do you want? *scratches head* So the lead dev said these things above (and similar things all over the web) and you defend people who complain about an Alpha being an Alpha by saying that? *hm*

Edit2:

Yeah, sure BI wanted to make money with the release. I mean...yes.

But a "broken alpha"? Nah. I repeat: For an Alpha it's pretty stable and playable and has a lot of content.

ah! another person who doesn't understand the concept.

they needed to do that to start collect funding for this game. they need to release something when you do that in Steam Early Access program. now they have more money than they ever hoped to get, so only NOW the development can truly start going forward.

geez, people. you really don't read anything, do you?

I am talking about the fact that releasing a hyped game as alpha, a highly expected game that everybody talked about, and expect people to read a warning and say "Its okey, I understand" its pretty naive or malicious. EA is a good concept for indie devs that have no support from companies and are not know in the mainstream, Project zomboid for example. But releasing a hyped game as EA is a bad move, and all the rant you see doesn't come from idiotic people "that can't read" as many of you fanboys think.

Anyway back to the point, we have what we have and we can only wait and hope for the best. Thats it.

the HAVE TO release something in Early Access program, and they also wanted feedback from fans on where to go with their product.

Naive or malicious to expect people to understand what they read? to understand warning signs? wow... ok... just... wow...

God, i thought for a second you talked about Electronic Arts (EA) as a good concept for indie devs...was in shock for a second XD

I don't think that I'm a fanboy, since I do know that DayZ has its flaws and that there are things that aren't even "good" (at least right now) and I do criticise some decisions, from which I think they are not ok.

With that being said:

I still don't get it. DayZ was hyped by the fans from the mod and the media. Read the old interviews from Dean Hall from last year - I don't think that "hyping" is the word that will come to your mind when you read them. Instead he told people not to buy it and that they should wait for the Beta if they only want to play.

So, this is just my guess:

People wanted it desperatly, so, for sure, Bohemia thought, well if they want it and our lead dev (who is the worst PR guy in history) claims all the time they shouldn't buy it, we release it as EA, so they can buy it and now that a lot of people want it, a lot of people will buy it and they can't complain because of said things. And if our lead dev says we hit Beta in 2015 (ermahgerd!) and he already delayed it for a year, we can't delay it for another year now, either nobody will buy it then or we will lose all credit we have.

They want to make money....yes. What else? They are not the welfare.(and even they need money)

But calling DayZ SA EA a "malicious" act is somehow weird in my eyes.

What makes me wonder, just to clarify, is this:

It's an Alpha. A lot of people don't know what a real "alpha" is, because they are used to the "Beta releases" which are normally finished products. Again: For an Alpha, DayZ is pretty stable, has a lot of content and works real good. For a Beta it would be a pretty shitty state. I am a programmer myself, and believe me, you wouldn't want to see a real alpha of any program you use at the office...

Still people complain about things all the time that ARE clearly alpha issues, and treat DayZ as it was a finished game, e.g. bugfixes. Bugfixes are NOT the #1 priority of an Alpha. Not optimized network code: Optimizing is NOT #1 priority of an Alpha (it's pretty far down the list tbh) etc. etc. etc.

Anyway back to the point, we have what we have and we can only wait and hope for the best. Thats it.

What I said :)

go whine on kids.

if you don't like what you get go cry deeply into yourself that you are stupid enough to buy a pre-release when you clearly don't understand the meaning of such a thing.

i've learned my lesson tho, you kids crying that the game is crap as it is right now clearly lack the wits to have a decent discussion with.

i think it would be best to ban all of you ignorant all knowing kids that think coding a game is easy and can be done within weaks.

tbh, it is pointless explain these monkeys that alpha is alpha and not beta or full product. The same discussions are on the StarForge forums, and they really don't achieve anything else but being a big pit for all the hate people have. (both the haters and the lovers of the game.

that is why imo, you should insta ban the posters or atleast remove posts which are constructed like this. there is no constructive feedback, there has been done little to no research at all into what features are already confirmed AND somehow it seems logical to these monkeys that bugs aren't going to be fixed(which of-course isn't the case but they seem to keep thinking it is because the bugs aren't fixed within 2 hours)

You don't have to be a programmer to know that they suck at programming. You can tell by playing the game. PS before you criticize someone you should learn to spell <3

umm yes you kind of do to understand it and they are doing fairly well, their making a game pretty much from scratch and rewriting all the old code that is still there they are just using the same engine as a nice base. before you insult someone at least know what the argument is about(and when you know you cant win a argument, correct their grammar)

int main(){
int Guess;
int smart = 1;
int dumb = 2;
SetConsoleTextAttribute(GetStdHandle(STD_OUTPUT_HANDLE), 10);
cout << "type 2 if SupermotoJunkie is a idiot, type 1 if he is smart: ";

while (true){
cin >> Guess;

if (Guess == smart){
cout << "nope he is dumb and so are you\n";
cout << "\n";
}
if (Guess == dumb){
cout << "correct, your smart\n";
cout << "\n";
}
}

}
