In-Game Books: What are you reading?

Recommended Posts

Currently, I enjoy reading "Robinson Crusoe" and feel like it's giving me many tips of survivory ability, but my general question is: Do you read the in-game books? If so: When, why, and which is your favorite?

I love hanging out in any house in a thunderstorm and just reading one or two of these books. I think they are a very cool addition to the game, if only to pass the time waiting for something to happen.

I think I'll try to find "The further adventures of Robinson Crusoe", cause I know there is a book like that in-game.

So, whaddaya think? Books yes, no, ignore?

I like that there are books in game that can be read. Way cool detail, imo.

I just picked this up the other day.

Waaahhh! I've been looking all over for that one! I'll trade you this book for tons of food and other amazing stuffs! It took me almost three weeks to find Robinson Crusoe, and that was on my list right after it.

I'm too lazy to check the wiki right now, but I'd love me some Edgar Allen Poe like "The red room" or something like that...

So yeah, who else gots themselves some books and wants to trade?

I'll also take German ones, as I lost the "Nibelungen" with an unfortunate Character Wipe :C

You better have some bodyguards. You need to have some hardcore guards, you could become the world's most badass underground book market.

Also, totally cool with the fact that right now the "books" are cut and paste jobs from third party open source projects.

But they contain certain coding errors which result in missing sentences and paragraphs and all sorts of meaningless symbols for instance question marks mixed sporadically and meaninglessly.

Long term, would be great element to game to hail a certain sophistication with a refined and edited text for each book.

Oh, some books seem broken and/or devoid of any actual text.

Anyway, books are the shit. We will be quoting that shit while we execute people on the coast, fer sure.

Unfortunately I found that on experimental. Which I think just got wiped, if I understand the devtracker correctly. I'm bummed, only got a few pages in. If I still have it when I log back in and if I survive long enough to finish it...it's totally yours afterward.

I read too much irl to be reading in a game.  Robinson Crusoe, I haven't read that book in years...

I actually started planning to be a "librarian" in-game, once bases are in ^^ I really want to read "The Raven", but I have to finish Crusoe first. Yesterday I hung out in game on a low pop server just to get a few more pages of dat book in.

Yeah, missing paragraphs and wrong characters are there, but mostly they don't bug me too much.

Now all I need is some Stephen King, Charlotte Bronte or "Little Women" in-game, my life would be so complete!

Boneboys: Thank you for moving this thread, I didn't even notice in which part of the forum I opened this topic!

I normally keep a New Testament on my character for luck.  I opened it once to see if it was what it said it was and didn't know how to exit out.  I then proceeded to arrow through every.  Single.  Page.  With the notion that maybe if I reached the end, it would close with the next arrow press.  Nope.  several good minutes of standing in a chapel with my face in a Bible, lol.  It's a fantastic addition that doesn't need to be there, but is because why not?  I've seen some really interesting titles that have certainly piqued my interest, but haven't had the dedication to sit down and read any of the ones upwards of a few pages.  Going on a tangent, I have left a few notes on paper laying around in airfields and hospitals and the likes.  Mostly stuff like "I can see you" and "I lost the game."

By the way, I just lost the game :/

Also, my character that I first started carrying a Bible on (dubbed Dr. Grant) hasn't died in nearly a month.  Been downed four times, broken legs at least four times as well, but haven't died.  Heck of a streak.

"Esc" Button FTW :-)

Found it eventually.  Same thing happened with my complete Chernarus map xD  Thought I would learn...  Also, I never thought I would ever have a complete map.  Now if only you could have a visual indicator of a waypoint set on the map.  I.E., if you have a map and a compass you can have a simple arrow pointing to one destination.  Would have to keep compass in hand in order to have waypoint marker, too.  Maybe have a little drift in the waypoint to replicate the player naturally going off course as their azimuth changes so that you have to stop to refocus your waypoint marker...

Random cool ideas ftw.

EDIT:  You should be able to post pieces of paper onto walls/trees/fences/other surfaces.  Would make players more inclined to check for notes than just another piece of paper on the ground...

Awesome to see other folks down with the books. I think it is a great test concept for in game entertainment.

There is just so much downtime in squad play. I usually carry at least one book around for when I'm waiting for someone, etc.

Add book to hotbar. Equip it. Then press tab (pretty sure).

Needs a bookmark or "goto page __" mechanic, too. I'll be reading and then I'll hear something. I want to esc out of book to look around but that's a pain if you're 20+ pages into a book.

[post=http://dayz.gamepedia.com/Books]

Heavier in the 19th,18th century it seems.

Would like to see more Shakespeare. Still looking for Hamlet. That's a keeper. I have a few players potentially interested in doing a Shakespeare in Elektro youtube type thing.

So more plays, maybe even screenplays. I'm hoping for lower word count items. I picked up Origins of Species awhile back and gave it a shot. But what a task!

Not sure what's wrong with me but I'm far more interested in the administration and accounting functionality of DayZ versus anything weapons or hunting, lol.

Must mention my hope for pocket protectors so pens and their kind are removed from traditional inventory and allowing for variety and quantity. Also binders so we can hold multiple papers in one inventory slot.

Finally, I wish the cursor could act as a pen during "write note" so that we could draw stuff. Maps, genitalia, ya know everyday DayZ stuff.

The books are a decent idea, but I don't think that they're implemented very well at the moment. The fact that the pages take up the entire screen feels unnecessary, and it puts you at a huge disadvantage as you can't see anything else. If they were to make it so that it took up half of the screen while still enabling the player to look around via mouse I think it would be far more appealing to people.

To all of you wondering how to read the books, you have to go into your control settings and bind the keys before you'll be able to read.

Year 2020. The zombie apocalypse has happened 5 years ago. Not alot of people are alive anymore.

But there are few survivors. Most of them are lying in a bush or an empty, cold house, reading a book.

Dragging the box to the action bar and then pressing the number it is assigned there also does the trick.
