Pyro-CA 8 Posted March 8, 2014 (edited) You need to add more wooden stick spawns to the game or at least add the wood chopping ability to create them. I'm going to tell you a story. This has happened to me twice in the last two days of my first days playing the game and it is a HUGE negative impact on the game. I spent a couple of hours acquiring some standard gear, climbed to the attic of a barn/warehouse, look at my inventory then hear a cry from myself. I had glitched and broken my legs. So what are my options? I could kill myself and waste the hours I spent acquiring gear or I could try to find a wooden stick to make a splint. I have the rags, those are easy to make, just need the sticks. The game is in a FOREST surely there are plenty of them around. The simple truth of that decision is that you should just kill yourself because you will not find wooden sticks easily. I chose to fix my situation and not be a quitter. I spent 6 hours crawling through sheds, hen houses, hunter trap-houses, barns, houses, attics, warehouses, farms, military bases, hospitals and FORESTS. I could not find not one "Wooden Sticks" spawn. Not one... Where does that leave me? I now have spent considerable more hours trying to fix my situation but ultimately found a lot of good gear. Now I have an invested interest in this character. The two possible resolution scenarios have not changed but I will probably continue my crawl. Praying and hoping every time I open a shed or crawl into a hanger. P.S. ADD ALOT ALOT ALOT MORE WOODEN STICKS. It is a very big map guys Edited March 8, 2014 by Pyro-CA
doctorrayray 76 Posted March 8, 2014 You should consider seeking medical attention. I have morphine. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/160262-need-medical-assistance-in-dayz-sa-find-your-medic-here/
pillock 850 Posted March 8, 2014 While I agree there should be infinite sticks in the woods, splinting you leg probably shouldn't restore you to full sprint mode.
Pyro-CA 8 Posted March 8, 2014 While I agree there should be infinite sticks in the woods, splinting you leg probably shouldn't restore you to full sprint mode. At least you would be able to walk which is considerable more faster than crawling. I can assure you.
pillock 850 Posted March 8, 2014 At least you would be able to walk which is considerable more faster than crawling. I can assure you. Yes. Hopefully they'll introduce a 'limping' animation somewhere down the line. And then make it so broken legs take several game hours to heal. I'd also like to be able to make a crutch out of a shovel, or something like that.
Deathlove 2286 Posted March 8, 2014 you should be able to craft splints with the fire wood as well if you have something like a fire axe or splitting axe.
Pyro-CA 8 Posted March 8, 2014 (edited) you should be able to craft splints with the fire wood as well if you have something like a fire axe or splitting axe. The firewood is also a rare find but it doesn't matter because the system has not been implemented yet. I tried anyway in vain, hacking away at trees and firewood piles with a splitting axe. Often with tears in my eyes... Edited March 8, 2014 by Pyro-CA
Walking Wounded 199 Posted March 8, 2014 OP I feel your pain. ive had broken legs from glitchy ladders 3 times now. and where are these sticks? in the forest!? no...... one thing i did notice was that I had some ruined gear from my recent fall... my stick was ''ruined'' when i tried to make a splint it suddenly popped one on the floor and when i used it i got red error messages on my screen and the splint was still there.. so top tip if you have ruined stick it gives you infinate splints providing you have the rags. hellcat420 212 Posted March 8, 2014 (edited) At least you would be able to walk which is considerable more faster than crawling. I can assure you.no you cant walk on a broken leg thats splinted. putting a splint on a broken leg merely stabilizes the leg to prevent further damage to the leg until you can get to proper medical treatment. it does not make you magically able to walk on a broken leg. a splint is just essentially an emergency cast, you would need someone to hold you up or crutches to be able to move anywhere, as you would not be able to use the broken leg. unassisted the best you should be able to do in this game is crawl with a broken leg, splinted or not. a broken leg should be essentially a death sentence in this game, as that is the only realistic way to do it if you do not have help(even with help it would most likely be a death sentence in a zombie apocolypse). IshFingers 26 Posted March 8, 2014 Another note on splints: do they have to take up 3 slots? Yes yes, realism blah blah, but 3 slots is a lot , especially considering most other medical stuff is just 1 slot. I've gotten into the habit of carrying a splint with me just in case (not needed them yet) but always come across something which could be more useful. Especially earlier on in a characters life where space is a precious resource.Ah well, I guess that kind of decision is part of the game....

I keep a ruined stick and a ruined bandage in my pants, and that's it. Infinite splints; no more broken arms and legs!Call it cheap, but I look at it as balancing the current state of random leg breaks. (;

I read online that a splint works the same as morphine.
finnpalm 312 Posted March 9, 2014 I think he means irl.Imo morphine should allow you to walk on a broken leg, but not run. And once the morphine buzz is over you should fall to the ground again, possibly with more pain than before. A splint should allow you to walk but not run, or the splint will break and you fall to the ground. And healing a broken leg should involve splinting it and then rest.So basically, morphine will allow you a chance to find the items for the splint. The splint will give you a chance to get to a safe spot to rest, like finding a house and hiding in a room with a gun pointed at the door. After a while spent completely still the leg is healed. If you move during this time the healing is paused until you stay still again, in which case the healing continues.
LaughingJack (DayZ) 767 Posted March 9, 2014 add the wood chopping ability to create them. + firewood. Totally on your side.
rickyriot 1009 Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) Injuries in general need reworking and with the new physics engine (and presumably a skeleton to support that) it opens up the ability for context based damage. Shoot someone in the leg and they should have problems walking, shoot someone in the arm and they cannot keep a steady aim, etc. Obviously there is always going to be a gap between real life and realism in a computer game, after all none of us wants 4-6 months of in game time in order to properly heal a broken leg, however I agree with some of the posters above when they say the injury should be more granular than it is now. Just getting a split and/or morphine shouldn't be the difference between crawling and sprinting. There needs to be more stages between A and B and for those stages to affect your character. This is where hardcore mode might offer something, with those servers having more several (and by implication realistic) affects of damage and it's contextual effects on the players mobility/functionality. In terms of the specific question the OP posed, I agree in the sense that you should be able to craft a split from trees/bushes/saplings although I do think that will happen anyway when the firewood and crafting is introduced. As for more spawning of sticks? I seem to find tons of them on the server these days although that might be down to loot weighting in relation to the new fracturing system implemented. Meenos 47 Posted March 9, 2014 a good idea if you cant fint medic help, wooden sticks etc is to go to a crowded city in a crowded server and iether ask for help or try to attack people as the poor man you are (broken leg) :) cheers gl mate +1 for more sticks
LaughingJack (DayZ) 767 Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) btw...when crawling at the feet off someone you should have the option "try to tuck legs" to throw him down...or even "bite in his calf" ;) I have never heard from the devs somethign in that direction (using trees as a source for firewood & splints)...or have I forgotten? Does anyone remember something like that being said? Why do people ask for specific guns in Q&A sessions but not for something like that? Sebidee 167 Posted March 9, 2014 My friend broke his leg and told me to get him a stick. Like a fool I ran into the woods. Surely you find sticks in the woods right? Turns out no. You should really be able to cut them off trees.
rickyriot 1009 Posted March 9, 2014 Rather ironically I suffered a leg break just minutes after posting my comment, and I didn't have either a stick and/or morphine. Not only that there is a bug where you cannot crawl out of some of the buildings, thus trapping me.Big thanks to TMW and Marijke and FabulousGeorge (Matt) for their euthanasia skills. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/160262-need-medical-assistance-in-dayz-sa-find-your-medic-here/

solodude23 649 Posted March 9, 2014 Yeah I agree. I broke my leg on some rocks near that newish town to the north, west of Svetlo. Luckily for me, I was smart enough to store my only morphine in my pants which was of course ruined when I fell. I crawled through every building, room, and garage and didn't find a single wooden stick. I then decided to climb to the top of a fire station, shoot off all my rounds, and crawl off the ledge to my death. You can stand up and vault to get out.Vaulting with a broken leg hasn't been possible since the release of 0.37. You can, however, use some of the F-communication keys to stand up/sit.
Pyro-CA 8 Posted March 11, 2014 (edited) A friend of mine broke his leg last night. So for a hour, I ran through 4 towns, 5 Warehouses, 30 sheds, 8 hunters huts and couldn't find any "Wooden Sticks". They really need to fix this soon because it takes away from the game A LOT. Edited March 11, 2014 by Pyro-CA
makomachine 263 Posted March 11, 2014 ,if they don't fix the availability issue and or crafting issue on sticks, they need to patch in the ability to suicide. Real life option and crawling for 2 hours isn't fun...
