Regular vs Hardcore: Why do you play?

Recommended Posts

Why do you play on the server type you play on? Regular or Hardcore?

To me, playing on Regular feels more like an arcade game while Hardcore feels more like an experience immersion.

The reason I like Hardcore is because you are actually confined within your environment as opposed to being semi-detached from it; you are completely a part of the environment and game, you look around by turning your head as opposed to getting a panoramic image 20 feet above your head highlighting all the dangers that lay ahead. I like that snipers have to expose themselves to get a first hand look at what's around them and they just can't hide in grass or on buildings and do a 360 camera twist from above their body to know what targets they have. I like that in Hardcore you need heightened awareness and faster reflexes to live or die... you don't see zombies or people coming as they run from around corners, fences, buildings, or around trees until they are pretty much in your face.

It also seems to be, there are less KoS types on Hardcore; people are there to immerse themselves in the environment, and are not playing the PvP game quite a much as the survivalist game.

Finally, it seems like the people who play Hardcore are generally older, and have run into very few children or teens on the Hardcore servers, they seem to stick to the Regular servers.

These are the reasons I prefer Hardcore.

What about you?

Regular, I like 3rd Person, this way I don't feel restricted.

restricted to what? Your person (edit: head)?

I play hardcore for many of the same reasons you listed.  Older/Mature crowd.  More realistic/immersive.

The problem is that my friends play on Regular though I am getting a few to join me on HC.  I have no problem with regular by the way the game is almost just as fun.  I just prefer HC.

I play hardcore because I am hardcore and prefer first person view in games.

I play both but I enjoy hardcore more because you need better situational awareness and planning. I play regular when I want to mess around.

I don't even watch videos of regular any more because 90% of it is waggling behind walls, I never really realised how boring and unchallenging it is.

Wall Waggling FTW.

I want to step up to hardcore but feel I still need to learn a lot about the game before I do.

I'm sure this has been asked/answered elsewhere but does anyone know if there are going to be any extensions to hardcore? I.E. Not just 1st person perspective.

Hardcore ftw, as combat isn't entirely dependent on corner peeking. I've also had better experience with the average hardcore player.

Head and can't view my guy, I like seeing my guy.

Pvpers do seem to prefer regular more but I suppose that is because peeking around corners would benefit them the most. I myself do like to pvp quite alot but also prefer the hardcore servers as firefights are far more intense and suspensful, not to mention you have to use squad tactics alot more so you can communicate with people that actually have eyes around a corner instead of 3rd person peeking (thats assuming you roll in a group and not lone wolf).

I play both. However, I find myself playing 1st person in regular more than 3rd person. I have just gotten used to it from HC.

I play both as well.   I would say situational awareness and planning is needed more in regular as your competition has a better view and can see around walls etc.  People refering to 1st person as hardcore are deluding themselves. It's a lot easier to run around in 1st person and not be seen by other players due to the restricted view.  People aren't being nicer on these servers, they just aren't seeing eachother as much and from as many "gotcha first" angles.  1st person is actually easy-mode.

Yes, 3rd person can break immersion.  Yes, seeing above and around walls is not logically sound. But this makes the game more difficult, not easier. In regular you have to watch out for someone being behind that distant wall/tree/building and watching you. You are never safe anywhere whereas in 1st person servers, cover actually means something.  I can understand you saying seeing around/over walls is boring... but you cannot say unchallenging as every other player has that same ability.  So now YOU are being watched over and around every wall.  It's fairly obvious that the mode that restricts view the most is going to be more unchallenging as you have less angles and views to worry about.

Like I said... I play both for the different feels they provide but regular is by far the most brutal when it comes to other players.

I do agree immersion and firefights are more intense and fun on 1st person, which is why I like it.

Press Tab?

I've played more on regular as of now, but recently I've been playing mostly on hardcore servers. I personally think that the experience is much better and more enjoyable to play.

I disagree the head is really weird while looking behind you in 1st Person.

If you don't mind explaining, please do.

No.

Say if you have a big coat or backpack on its in the way and you cant look behind you, plus I feel extra slow in 1st Person.

I barely ever use 3rd but have only just begun to play exclusively on hardcore servers. Not having third doesnt bother me but knowing that others can does. it's a crying shame that the advanced stances of Arma 3 weren't ported to SA though. I doubt I'm the only one that gets their vision obscured by mere inches when peaking through a window frame and wished they could raise or lower their head just a little more. The key to weaning players off of 3rd person is a full range of movement.

Honestly... I hope eventually they enforce 1st person for one patch.  I do like 3rd really for the 'looks' of my own character when I get some cool gear, but other then that it's a cheap game mode that should be slowly phased out of DayZ.  You can see through walls in 3rd, making PvP less immersive and gives everyone who exploits it a cheap advantage.  HC is way more fun/intense when you encounter players because NO 360 degree PARASCOPING your way out of everything.  I can't begin to list how many times I've used it to own the fuck out of people back in the mod -- all ghillied up like a retard pwning fuck heads with my M14... Now that I reflect I would really support Rocket if he begins to phase 3rd out later towards Beta.

I wish I had my desktop with all my screenshots on FRAPS, I have tons of shots of parascoping through walls -- showing how unfair and cheap it is to play 3rd.

IMO it would be cool if they took 3rd out eventually, then implemented something similar like Fallout where you can rotate around your toon 3rd person and that's it.

That's part of the realism some people have a hardon for. I personally think 3PP is stupid and totally unnecessarily. But I only play HC so I don't care if other people want to play personal drone camera feed mode. More power to them and the idiots that they magically get the drop on and KoS.

Thank you for replying, but i don't see how it is 'weird' to not be able to look behind yourself if there is something actually blocking your view.

I will say that some of the doors make first person kind of weird though. Sometimes I feel very short or very tall depending on which building I'm in, mostly at the doors and stairs. Some of the door handles are at chest level and some of the ceilings above stairs are right above your head. They look the same in third person though, but aren't as noticeable, to me at least.
