What is your fresh spawn tactic for fighting Zombies?

When I am a fresh spawn I have a lot of difficulty with zombies. I find it very difficult to look for stuff  and find the bare essentials I need to survuve. It's not until I find an axe that I can confidently take on zombies, other weapons take way too long and are all but useless against swarms. So, how do you do it?

Always aim for the head. Once they're on the ground, you have complete control of the battle. Can't attack you while they're knocked out ;)

I usually bypass them. They run like someone's drunk grandmother. They can be avoided, easily. Just run pass them. Never stop to fight them. I found myself stopping to fisticuff the bastards at first, then realized they were slow and easily avoidable. But if you do have to fight one, go into first person mode, if you don't play in it all ready, circle round them and aim for the head.

I usually run but i've found that Hacksaws are surprisingly effective against them. 2-5 shots to the Head-upper body will almost always kill one.

I just run. I attack them only when axe-equipped, I've tried other melee weapons but none of them is effective enough.

FIST-FIGHT! I enjoy killing zombies with yer bare hands! Feels so good afterwards, but difficult to find a pond to get rid of these pieces of brains and eyeballs on your hands.

if I have no axe I run away from them screw bleeding. and if I can I just out maneuver them and loot that way. hell I don't mess with them if I don't have to they make a great alarm system some gets nearby they let you know so I try and keep a lot of them around the areas I loot when by myself mostly.

Don't fight unless you have a weapon. If you have to fight aim for the head. If you can knock anything out, be it players or zeds then you have the advantage. Just beat on them while they're down. Getting either kind of axe or a gardening hoe will work well for killing them. The fire extinguisher is really accurate if you want to konk them out. I would avoid shovels and crowbars myself. But to each his own. Good luck out there and remember to head further inland if you're on a server with little to no loot. People tend to stick to coastal towns and places adjacent to airfields. Avoid those areas and you can cover your basics with relative safety. If you upset a horde of zombies you'll have to dodge them for a while and then run all the way to the next town over trying to lose them. Try and sneak around. Zombie sight is supposed to be based on human sight so camo and dark clothing helps. Stay in shadows and make as little nosie as possible.

Sneak up on them without alerting them, knock em in the head and they fall down immediately. Proceed to beat the unliving shit out of their craniums as they stand back up.

Yea your best bet is to avoid them.  I will NOT fight a zombie if I am unarmed.  Takes too long and leaves you vulnerable.  As others have said, just out run them, and try not to pull them in the first place.  If you do have to fight them, especially with your fists, you MUST keep moving.

The zombies are hilariously easy to beat even in a horde. Unarmed, alone against three, four zeds. I died only once to zeds in my second day because I didn't know about the knockout system.

If you find one of the one-handed hammers, I've found that 3 knocks to the head will kill an infected, or if you get a hit to the head, if you keep beating them on the ground, by the time they get back up they're dead.

One handed weapons, despite being garbage against players, are like 3 hit headshot kills against zombies. I always carry one unless I have an Axe (even if I carry a bat/crowbar/wrench/shovel or whatever, I still keep a knife/machete/saw/screwdriver/hammer in my inventory for Zombies because it's easier to get headshots with them).

Upon character creation, I decided my character would be a man. So when I spawn I rip my shirt into rags, then I stand and fight the first zed I see. I punch him in the torso til he falls then I let him get back up cuz I fight like a man. Then I hand him my fire ax to make it fair and uppercut the crap out of him. Then I take a dump in a burlap sack and put it on the other fresh spawns head who is watching my battle in amazement. Unless it's a girl then I force feed her my rotten banana. Like a man.
