DayZ feels American

Recommended Posts

There seems to be more and more items in the game that resemble American culture or history.

When I first started DayZ because of a friend, I was told that this is a post-apocalyptic survival horror video game. The setting takes place somewhere in a fictionalised modern area of the Russian Federation. Initially, I agreed but as I played on and time passed, somehow it feels sort of American. You know, over half the firearms in this game are American. There's Magnum, M4, FN, Ruger, and finally, remington. We getting more?. The hats and clothing on the other hand, not many I admit but they do feel western. Cowboy hat, seriously? First the Magnum, now cowboy hats? We getting cowboy boots with spiked heels next?

I honestly don’t mind the game having American weapons and apparel but they shouldn’t be so many types and variants. American firearms shouldn’t even spawn in military bases or consist of half of the firearms in the game. In Russian military bases as seen in documentaries and amateur videos, one will expect to find only or perhaps mostly Russian made weapons, not Americans. It makes sense to find American weapons in gun stores in cities near the sea, not in military bases. I am sitting here wondering, where are the standard and popular Russian weapons? Where is the 443 Grach, and Gsh 18? And the classics like AK 47?

Come to think of it, where are the flags? I've been to cities, military installations, rural areas but no flag poles or Russian flags.

American firearms shouldn’t even spawn in military bases

Lol.

Someone obviously hasn't played ArmA 2.

Also, FN Herstal isn't an American company.

Also, again: Grach sells military firearms, not civilian ones; I would think that the 443, the Viking, and all the other pistols that company makes would only be available to the military and criminal elements. But to answer your question, they're in development. Do you not know what DayZ ALPHA means?

Yes, some guns look american and that payday mask too. But so what? Most of the game looks pretty russian to me. And I don't have problems with americans (or any other country actually, why would I), so yeah, who cares?

The map is based off the Czech Republic, which DOES use US made weapons as well as Russian.

However the cowboy hat is quite weird.

Magnum isn't a gun, it is a bullet designation, generally indicating a larger or more powerful round. FN is not an American gun manufacturer. Ruger and Remington are American manufacturers, but export a lot. The M4 is the odd man out, but I think covered in the supposed Chernarus story.

And the coast.

In the area where chernaurus is based off of, its a river. I believe the area is somewhere near the german-czech border.

Cowboy hats have no business in this game.

American flags even less.

Pipsi should die, and Zluta Cola should come back.

Arma 2 is Arma 2, and has nothing to do with DayZ.

When people whine about the game being too dumb or hard you say that it's "not for everyone", "closest thing to a simulator" or "hardcore".

However when someone finds a flaw in it's "super realism", these same people say that it's just a game.

The map is very well made, reminds me of when I lived in Ukraine.

But I wouldn't like to have a "Americanized" post-sovietic zombie apocalypse.

Well, let's just establish this. Chernarus is not Russia. I don't think this is as xenophobic as you guys are knocking it for being. He has a point, the island is not far from Russia and should follow a lot of the customs followed there. They will be changing gun spawns and adding many more guns soon so those items can't really be argued about. Russian influences on the clothes are there but there are many western ones as well. This isn't unrealistic though, western culture could be popular in Chernarus. As far as flags go, no one knows the official military history of Chernarus, the U.S. may have sent troops there. There are a lot of tell tale signs that the UN intervened at some point in the process of the zombie outbreak. However I feel like Chernarus itself should have it's own flag. That'd be neat to see places especially all tattered. All in all you're addressing a topic of minor importance but it's still worth addressing. The game design has a long way to come but so far I haven't noticed things going in a bad direction.

You know, when you're marketing a game to mostly US players, or in the future plan to.. it makes sense to have them feel "included".

Im willing to bet its got a good deal to do with them being approached by console makers. All of this silly stuff got added in after Sony and MS started to talk to the dayz staff from what I can tell.

I think everyone should get F22s that contain apple pies, baseball bats, and plastic surgery kits.

Why do people forget about the UN being in a place like this? American soldiers in a foreign country will still dress however they want off duty. Meaning cowboy hats are plausible just as  is the M4.

Yes, but it's clearly not a river in DayZ, and it's clearly not the Czech Republic either. So I don't think you can really use that as a justification for what weapons might be there.

It's a fictional scenario and a fictional place - so you can probably explain away pretty much anything that's found there... if there is a background story. Do we know what it is?

Well lets see, it would be silly for this just be isolated solely for the Russian government to handle. Eventually outside powers like Nato are going to try and find out what the hell is going on too.

Clown mask and cowboy hat, I agree.

M4 attachments, not so much, it uses a standardized rail system, picatinny, that is used on many firearms.

Magnum is a nonsensical name. It is not a gun name. Might as well call it "bullet" or "caliber". They mean .357 Magnum, which is pretty common. No real issues with that one.

The chest holster isn't really a common thing here, looking like it does in game. There are quite a few Russian ones that look similar, but I couldn't say if they are common there. The design is suspect, but I don't much notice it.

well im sure in an apocalypse your not going to care if the gear is american, Russian, polish, Japanese or whatever. As long as its FUNCTIONAL am i right? Or are the Russian ppl that stuborn and prideful with there own manufactured goods. Iv seen many Americans try to stick with "MADE IN AMERICA" products for the simple idea it makes them feel some bullshit superiority or patriotism but i really dont care where the item is made as long as it works good.

Wait, what, Russia has no Walmart stores with half off specials selling American themed knock-off Chinese produced products or made to order military gear advertised on welfare check day?  WTF!
