I've heard troubling rumours...(no helis)

...that Dean was saying helicopters shouldn't be in DayZ. I mean, it is his game (at least until the end of the year) and he can push it in any particular direction, but what would DayZ be with out helicopters? They are the end game. They create perilous parts runs around the map in vehicles, which have cause some of the most awesome DayZ moments I have ever experienced. And, when you do get it up in the air, that feeling of power is pretty damn addicting haha.

 

Conclusion: I really hope that this is just a rumour and not the truth.

I've not heard him say that.  Could have missed it, but I've kept a pretty close eye on the development communications for the SA for the past many months.  

 

I wouldn't' worry too much until the development road map comes out, which should be soon.  This should confirm or deny pretty clearly.

Unarmed heli, could take it or leave it personally. Map is small once you can rise above, travel by land makes it more taxing. Armed heli's...just no. Trollfest down the coast waiting to happen, bad idea.

I don't see how this game (as the current map is) could support aircraft of any kind.  It's not that big to start, regular land vehicles are going to make it so fast to cross the map it's going to be trivial to get from point a to point b.

There are a couple reasons this makes me sad:

 

1. I personally don't care to have a chopper, but the group I play with having a chopper is our form of "end game"... the epic quest. I remember when we finally got one in the mod it was awesome... until we found our "quest" had pretty much ended and had a large now what moment. In the end it was just a quick way to retrieve and regear fallen members of the squad.

 

2. The effect of hearing a chopper nearing. The FEAR... run and take cover hoping its passengers didn't see you. I'll never forget riding on a moto in Tavi when a chopper found us and took chase through the streets of Sabina. They shot us dead after a good 2 or 3 min of swerving heading for the tunnel. Thrills... not even mad from a death like that.

I am not saying I am against choppers. I think they add a brilliant dynamic, having this Pearl that everyone covets. I was just mentioning that they are indeed powerful, but it is not impossible to break up a hoarders base and make off with the goodies.

If they implement helicopters with requiring heavy repairs and constant maintenance and a hungry fuel requirement, etc, I think it wouldn't be a bad addition.

 

If the parts are incredibly rare, you wouldn't risk your helicopter flying around trolling people; especially if it can take heavy damage from gunfire and ruin your parts; and the helicopter crashing risks both of your life and the helicopter. In the end, it makes the helicopter a much bigger target than the people shooting at it.
