For anyone who doesn't play on night servers, maybe give them a chance? They're really something else with the right music playing. Very atmospheric and probably my favorite servers to just think on.

 

 

Also general night time stories topic. Who else likes to play in the dark and why?

I love playing in the dark on full servers of 50/60 people, it makes things more immersive in the zombie apocolyptic sense; and it also makes most bandits useless at long range.

How do you manage to find a server with that many people on it? I usually go on the US servers (experimental) and things only stay dark for a short time. Then the server resets.

I haven't been able to find any servers I can connect to that run 24/7 time or short days. Everything is 24/7 Day and its annoying

I've only played one with that many, but I loved it.

I really just find servers with 2+ on night servers now, it's very dissapointing.

..Ive played on the night only servers many times and love it. I like to do that rather than the typical find a low pop server, if I dont feel like killing people or getting in firefights.. its more fun to feel some what safe in the dark, but to know that there are 35+ other players out there and its so dark you can barely see your hands. Do not ever mess with your video settings to defeat the dark.. just find a new (day) server at that point.

i want to play on night time servers but i can´t, because dayz crashes, it crashes because all the buildings starts to flash and then everything stops,

my graphic card is ADM 7800 something.

I presume you are filtering the gamma setting? If this was how night actually looked, I would play more during that time. Otherwise, it's just too dark and more frustrating than what it should be. Not being able to see 2 feet in front of you is overkill. I am hoping they adjust night time brightness by release. But for now, I'm not going to adjust the settings to give me an advantage.

Yeah I like night time but the fact of the matter is that if I play night 90% of the people will have their gamma/brightness sliders right up to make it a grey day, so I either do that to stay competitive/alive but then it's like well fuck this is just a shitty looking day, switch to a day server fixed it.

 

If they address the whole gamma slider thing I'll play night, cos it's wicked creepy sometimes but there is no point right now as far as I'm concerned.

Too bad you're a loser and turn up your gamma way up.  What is the point of playing at night if you are basically cheating?  Use one of the various light sources and potentially give away your location to other players or just stick to day time servers.

While I agree for the most part, it's kind of pointless at this point in time since hardly anyone is actually using the flashlights. So if you're the one guy on the server using his, you'll stand out to everyone and get lit up in no time.

I have taken a couple of photos in the same exact spot to show what it really looks like at night with and without a light source.  No abusing the gamma slider and I have come across quite a few other players using their light sources as well without confrontation.  Instead, we would chat about how creepy the atmosphere was at night time and how the zombies actually become a legit threat when you cannot see where they are coming from.

My screens crap so i usually have brightness up quite a bit. I also did have gamma sided up but not too high since it gets grainy otherwise. I honestly couldn't see very far even with it like that and since I didn't think a black screen would be very interesting I upped the brightness and contrast in post some more. I'd like to note that the first slip was right when the sun had set enough for things to go gray. It was still fairly well lit. Also I have to say that changing your gamma and brightness to be higher is perfectly acceptable. In real life your eyes can adjust over time. The amount of darkness in the game is excessive and I hope that when they're done working with the lighting design they can give night play a much nicer feel. The devs haven't payed night much heed to nighttime yet. Plus if I have my gamma/brightness higher at night I leave it that high at daytime too. Partly because I can't be bothered to switch it.

Okay here, this video might get you guys to stop whining. I use the same settings during the day and during the night in the game and aside from skipping the spawn-timer I didn't edit the footage. In the previous video I did however pump up the brightness and contrast a tad. I'm starting to think you fellows aren't even watching more than a few seconds of the stupid thing seeing as the start of it is filmed right when things started to get dark. There was still quite a bit of sunlight. I honestly don't know why you guys think it's any better to play with your settings lower than they should be. Your visibility would be so bad it would be pointless to try and go anywhere at all.

Honestly you said you had the gamma up and the brightness up.  You also said "changing your gamma and brightness to be higher is perfectly acceptable". Also when I said I had the gamma slided up I meant to the degree that you can see in the second video. It's above normal but not maxed out or anything. It's just a visual preference thing. I stick by what I said earlier too, I don't think anyone who does pump up their gamma/brightess is cheating. It's a setting in the game. It's built in. They're not hacking their screen to be brighter. It's not against the rules or against the spirit of the game. It just annoys the people who like having a lower visibility then them because they're afraid of getting killed by something they can't see. Which honestly isn't grounds for complaining since you could also just turn up your settings. You choose not to and should deal with the consequences of that choice, both the negative and positive ones. I'm sure people will be less inclined to over-boost their gamma settings when night time has it's kinks worked out.

I'd quote the other mention of the word cheating. But I assume you can read. Just do that. On a side note, I'd totally change the title to "Walking Around In The Dark" if it were possible. Though It seems pointless to get hot and bothered about word choice. (But I'd still call 17:30-21:30 fumbling) 

 

Edit: Flashlights are for weenies you should not need a flashlight to see. They should help but not be necessary. They do this already. Setting it so dark that the flashlights are your only way of seeing anything is idiotic. The moonlight coming through the clouds and the fact that your pupils can adjust mean that when your outside or near a window you should be able to see more or less okay.

Oh get off your high (dark) horse for 3 seconds. That level of darkness is unrealistic and it would be pointless to play like that.

I do think the way you have it set in the video looks bad ass, and THAT, imo, is how the devs should make the night look without having to adjust anything. Nothing wrong for what you are doing, nothing at all. that grayed out look look is creepy as hell and fits the theme of the game.
