Riot shields and improv shields

Recommended Posts

Ballistic shields are in use by SWAT teams, aren't they? I imagine they could stop small calibre fire, and maybe even a Mosin shot from the other side of NWAF. At close range I imagine they'd be considerably less effective, however.

A 7.62 x 54 mm round would smash through a ballistic shield, it'd be useless against that caliber. 5.56 would be effective, maybe the shield could protect you at 700+ meters. I could only see it really being effective against .9 mm, .20, or .45 ACP

I know nothing about ballistics, so I've got no idea. Would be a nice feature to have ballistic shields, though, even if they only reduce damage rather than completely mitigating it.

On a sort of related note, what does 7.62 x 54mm or 5.56 x 45mm mean? Do those numbers refer to the size of the bullet? If so I'm not sure how unless it's referring to the width in terms of the diameter of the bullet, or something.

eh, i wouldn't be opposed, but I think it should take up the same slot as a backpack, and while it is equipped, it should be two handed.  Would be interesting to run around with a riot shield on your back, no one would be able to shoot you in the back lol

A 5.56/7.62 round would go straight through one of those things. They are only meant to stop things like rocks/stones hitting police officers and only really work when there is a big line of them stuck together. With that in mind they are pretty pointless unless against an unarmed attacker, but then if you can't use one with a weapon it's still pointless!

The bullet might go through, but it wouldn't hit the person behind as hard. So in a way, it would still help protect..

Yeah, would be good to know, too xD

7.62 is length with bullet, and 54 only the "case"..?

I stopped at riot shield...

Besides what COD would like to tell you, those are not meant for serious, armed engagements, those are meant to hold back (What else?) riots of people.

good for zombie apocalypse ?

it would be so cool on melee pvp. but i think if it is bullet proof it is over powered.but if it protects small ammo it would be great

Improvised shield? of what material, the akm penetrates any metal that would be light enough to even carry around as a shield.

Nope. It will just be abused. People going in to corners and staying there. Plus in real life, military don't use them. They're for riots.

If they WERE added in, I would like them to be found ONLY in police stations, nowhere else possible, and they would be super rare. AND they would replace your backpack. AND they were not bulletproof. AND they could not be abused by going in to a corner. AND you could not slam somebody to death with it. Or what I prefer, not adding it at all.

A metal one could help against bullets, somewhat I think they should have a chance to deflect bullets depending on the angle it hits and maybe slightly reduce damage.

You're still going to die though, in most cases.

If anything it would be best on your back so anyone shooting you there has a harder time killing you.

It would be great against zombies though, bash them away and take no damage. It could be the ultimate melee weapon for fighting any number(unless your talking thousands) of zombies. And then it has it's drawbacks of leaving you unable to chop wood, mine stone, dig up worms, etc etc.

It could be a well balanced good addition so long as it wasn't an impervious bullet shield.

Imagine seeing clans of people with them in a tight formation marching like Romans being immune to all bullets...and then someone throws a grenade in the middle of them.

Make it happen devs...

AND they would replace your backpack.

If they're not even that good that's a bit excessive...

Not even arrows. If you've ever shot a bow, they are much like the speed of a gun. Especially if you use copper or steel.

I know this is an old post, but I'm amazed no one pointed out that the speed an arrow flies at is _nothing like_ the speed a bullet flies at.  400 fps is incredibly fast for a bow -- a slow bullet (.45 ACP) travels at ~900 fps.

I guess you are correct, but it really makes no difference. A brittle arrowhead like flint will snap on Impact of a riot shield, where as a steel arrowhead will punch through. (depending on the material, though I assume we are talking about improvised riot shields.

I have never play COD so I wouldn't know, all i know is if this is my only tool to avoiding being sniped while I try to make it to the balota hangers, then I would much rather have it than not.

gotcha -- I assumed we were talking about bullet proof riot shields the cops would use.  If they were just random junk, I wouldn't expect them to stop spit balls.

Wouldn't mind seeing it  to be honest. Just keep them similar to the ones being used in Kiev.

How about shields in general?  We have bows and arrows and melee weapons.  Makeshift shields only makeshift sense.

Dean mentioned he wanted players to rip off car doors so they may install them on another car.  Could said player use the car door to stop arrows while transporting it?

I believe that could be useful by holding of infected people. For example: A zed runs infront of you, trying to launch an bloody attack against your body, you can hide beyond the shield. Since it is an riot shield, it should be able to handle the hands-only-attack of the infected one. Maybe you can launch an 'counter-attack' by pushing the shield against the zed, so he falls back or to the ground, so you have little time to run off. But I dislike the idea that a normal riotshield could hold of ammuniton.
